Find y 0 by implicit differentiation:
(a) 7y 2 + sin(3x) = 12 − y 4.

Find the equation of the tangent line at the given point:

(a) x4 + y 2 = 3 at (1, − 2).
(b) y 2e2x = 3y + x2 at (0, 3) .
Question 3
Assume that x = x(t), y = y(t) and z = z(t), differentiate the given
equations with respect to t:
(a) x2y 3 + z 4 = 1.
(b) x2cos(y) = sin y 3 + 4z .


Question 4
In the following, assume that:
(a) x and y are both functions of t. Given that x = −2, y = 1 and
x0 = −4, determine y 0.
(b) x, y and z are all functions of t. Given that x = 4, y = −2,
z = 1, x0 = 9 and y 0 = −3, determine z 0 for the equation:
x(1 − y) + 5z 3 = y 2z 2 + x2 − 3
Question 5
For a certain rectangle, the length of one side is always three times the
length of the other side.
(a) If the shorter side is decreasing at a rate of 2 inches/minute, at
what rate is the longer side decreasing?
(b) At what rate is the enclosed area decreasing when the shorter side
is 6 inches long and is decreasing at a rate of 2 inches/minute?

A thin sheet of ice is in the form of a circle. If the ice is melting in such
a way that the area of the sheet is decreasing at a rate of 0.5 m2/sec,
at what rate is the radius decreasing when the area of the sheet is
12m2?

A person is standing 350 f eet away from a model rocket that is fired
straight up into the air at a rate of 15 f eet/sec. At what rate is the
distance between the person and the rocket increasing:
(a) 20 seconds after liftoff?
(b) 1 minute after liftoff?
Question 8
A tank of water in the shape of a cone is being filled with water at
a rate of 12 m3/sec. The base radius of the tank is 26 meters and
the height of the tank is 8 meters. At what rate is the depth of the
water in the tank changing when the radius of the top of the water is
10 meters ?

Let f (x) = x3 + 2x2 + 3x + 1. Find the:
(a) average rate of change of f (x) between x = 2 and x = 3.
(b) instantaneous rate of change of f (x) at x = 2.

relative maxima. If it is not possible to classify the critical points
clearly, explain why they cannot be classified.

For the following function, find the inflection points and use the second
derivative test, if possible, to classify the critical points, and sketch the
graph of the function.

(b) Let x and y be two positive numbers such that x + 2y = 50 and

no top. Determine the dimensions of the box that will maximize
the enclosed volume.
(d) We want to construct a cylindrical can with a bottom but no top,
that will have a volume of 30 cm3. Determine the dimensions
of the can that will minimize the amount of material needed to
construct the can.

whose position is represented by s(t) = 5sin(4t) + cos(2t) ?
(b) During the first 15 seconds of its flight, the displacement of a
spacecraft is given by the equation

What is its velocity at 10 seconds, given that its initial velocity is
0?

Determine all the number(s) c which satisfy the conclusion of the Mean
Value Theorem for the following functions and intervals:
(a) f (x) = x3 − x2 + x + 8 on[−3, 4].
(b) A(t) = 8t + e−3t on [−2, 3].
(c) P (t) = e2t − 6t − 3 on [−1, 0].
