EXP_7_power_measurement

The document outlines an experiment for measuring power on a single-phase supply using a NI USB-6009 DAQ card and LabVIEW software. It includes a list of required apparatus, theoretical background on power types (real, reactive, and apparent), and a procedure for conducting the experiment. Students are expected to record observations and write conclusions and discussions based on their results.

Theory:
In AC circuits, energy storage elements such as inductors and capacitors may result in
periodic reversals of the direction of energy flow. The power averaged over the complete
cycle of the AC waveform results in the net transfer of energy in one direction, known as real
power; this is also called active power and true power. Power due to the rate of change of
stored energy is known as reactive power.

The output ac power is

PApparent = VRms ∗ IRms

Where Vrms & Irms are the root-mean-square value of the output voltage and current,
respectively

Active Power is,

T
PActive = 1/T ∫0 Pdt = VICos∅

Where P=Instantaneous Power

Hence, P_active is the average of instantaneous power.

Reactive power is
PReactive = √PApparent − PActive

The power Factor is the ratio of real power to apparent power in the circuit. It is the practical
measure of the efficiency of the power distribution system.

Procedure:
1. Make the connection and block diagram per the circuit diagram.
2. Adjust the autotransformer to get ammeter readings of 1A, 1.5 A, 2A, 2.5A, 3A.
3. Take the readings as displayed on the screen.
