Hyperbola

1. DEFININON OF HYPERBOLA
The hyperbola is the set of all points in a plane, the difference of whose distance from two fixed points in the plane is a constant.
The term difference that is used in the definition means the distance to the farther point minus the distance to the closcr point. The
two fixed points are called the &qi of the hyperbola. The mid-point of the line segment joining the foci is called the centre of the
hyperbola. The line through the foci is called the transverse axis and the line through the centre and pcrpendicular to the trarsverse axis
is called the conjugate axis. The points at which the hyperbola intersects the transverse axis are called the y94g!999 ofthe hlperbola"

We denote the distance between the two foci by 2c, the distance between two vertices (the length ofthe transverse axis) by 2a
and we define a quantity, as b: ,lr' -o' .

Let the foci of hyperbola be (t c, 0). Then its centre is (0, 0).

Above is a 2nd degree equation in which the powers ofx and y are even, and hence, the curve of equation is symmetric about
both the axes. For each x ) c or .r < --a, there are two values ofy symmetrically situated on either sides ofr-axis and for each value of
r lying in the interval (-a, c), the curve fails to exist. Hence, the curve denoted by equation (l) consists of two slmmetrical branches,
each extending to infinity in two dtections.
Ifa : D, hyperbola is said to be eouilateral or rectangular and has the equatiot, t -i = A.

. The points of intersection ,4, and 12 ofthe curve with the Fansverse axis are called vertices ofthe hyperbola. The length '2a'
between the vertices is called the length oftransvene axis.
o The points 8t (0, 6) and A, (0, - b) which have special significance, are known as the extremities of conjugate axis and the
length '2b' is called the length ofconjuqate axis.
. The point of intersection of two axes is called the centse (O) of the hypeftola.

Corresponding to every hyperbola there exists a hypertola such that the conjugate axis

Properties of tangent to h,?erbola are similar to the properties oftangent to ellipse. Consider the standard equation of hyperbola

o,

(i) Feet ofperpendiculars fiom foci upon any tangent lies on the auxiliary circle.
In the figure, tangent is drawn to hyperbola at point P on it.
Feet ofperpendiculan from foci F, and -F2 on the tangent are M, and M2 which lie on auxiliary circle.
(ii) Product ofperpendiculan fiom foci upon any tangent ofhype6ola is equal to square ofthe semi-conjugate axis.
According to the figure,
FrM, x Frl,!r: b2
(iii) Segment of tangent between the point of contact and the point wher€ it m€ets the directrix subtends right angle at the
corresponding focus.

In the figue, tangent meets dir€ctrix , = 9 at Qr-

e
So, PQt subtends right angle at corresponding focus f'.
Also, tangent meets d]I;ec*ix x=-! al Qz.
e
So, PQ, subtends right angle at corresponding focus Fr.
(iv) Tangent at the extsemities of latus rectum passes through the corresponding foot of directrix on major axis.
(v) Chord of contact w.r.t. any point on the directrix passes through the corrcsponding focus.
(vi) Tangent at point P on the hyperbola bisects the angle between two focal radii of point P.
In the figure, tangent at P bisects the angle F,PFr.
(r,ii) The above propery spells out the reflection property ofhyperbola.
Ifincident ray emanating from one ofthe foci gets reflected by the hyperbola then reflected ray passes through the other focus.
In the frgure, incident ray ftom 4 strikes the hyperbola at point P. Then the reflected ray passes through the focus Fr.
Similarly, if incident ray is F2P then refleded ray passes through F,.
(viii) Image ofone ofthe foci in the tangent lies on the linejoining other focus and point ofcontact.
ln the figure, image -R of focus F, in the tangent lies on the line joining focus F2 and point ofcontact P.

o A hypertola and its conjugate have the same asymptotes.
. The asymptotes pass tbrough the centre ofthe hypertola and the bisectors ofthe angles between the asymptotes are the axes
oflhe hyperbola.
. Asymptotes are the tangent 10 the hyperbola from the centre.
. The equation of the pair of asymptotes differs the hyperbola and the conjugate hyperbola by thc same constaDt only.
. The asymptotes ofa hyperbola are the diagonals ofthe rectangle formed by the lines drawn through the extremities ofeach
axis parallel to the other axis.
o For rectangular hyperbol4 we have D = a. Then the asymptotes of the rectangular hyperbola I f

are at right angles.
. IfAom any point on the aqmptotes, a sEaight line be drawn perpendicular to the transvene axis, then the product of the
segments ofthis line, intercepted between the point and the curve is always equal to the square ofthe semi conjugate axis.
o Perpendicular from the fo€i on either asymptote meets it in the same point as the conesponding directrix and the common

when lioined Shatru sir's class, the beginning I wasn't too sure ofwhat my shortcomings were in Maths. Sir not only identified them but
ln
also help me fix them. All this took quite some time, but sir was always there to constantly motivate me. He was more like a friend than a
teacher and this made the process of learningvery interesting. The variety of problems he provided me with was commendable. His efforts
helped me develop speed and accuracy. He also often discussed with me the different strategies during an exam, and as a result I was able
to choosethe best one for myself.

I always dreamt of being in the best institute in the best branch. And here I am today pursuing Computer Science (B.Tech) in llT-Bombay. A

large reason for this dream coming true is Shatru Sir. From Day one of his coaching he was very interactive with the class. His motive is to
make every student understand before moving on. This helped me cover a lot in the coaching itselt And in case of doubts he was always
available for clarifying them. He used to keep the atmosphere joyous while teaching which clearly showed his passion towards teaching.
This also enabled everyone to be involved in the class lecture. His friendly behavior enablesthe students to interact more in class and I used
to enioy attending his classes. Until the very last day before the exams he kept us motivated by giving us ideas on how to approach the
papers and not to panic under any circumstance. lt were his vital inputs because of which I can pursue my dream today. I am very thankful
to him for all he has done and wish him allthe best for his future endeavors.

It was in classl1when lAaronyak Dewanjigot enrolled in Shatrudha sir's classes. He is a very motivationaland persistent teacher, and was
not perturbed byteaching virtually. ln f"ct, I never noticed any di-erence between 5ir's o_ine and online classes, I even felt lwas sifing in a
classroom sometimes. 5ir would encourage each and everyone in the class to participate and speak up and he gave individual ca re to each
student's strength and weaknesses. He made sure that every minute ofthose Zoom meetings was put to use, and his daily assignments
were very helpful. When JEE Advanced got postponed Sir took €xtra classes and made sure that all his students were not forgetting the
concept. My motherfrequently told me that I am not llT material. (And I atreed.) She also used to callShatrudha sir on the phone and told
him about how I didn't want to study and always played video games. Sir was always very patient in hearing out. Sir convinced my mother
that I had the capacity to go to llT. His exact words were'llT bhejhna hai usko' (We have to send him to llT). He started pushing me very hard
and often called to keep track ofhow eveMhing was going on. And finally allthe motivation and persistence was fruitful .
Thank you sir.

ljoined Shatru sir y/o. He is literally one ofthe best teachers I have ever met. He knew exactly what I
in class 12 as a confused and unsure 17
was capable of and would go above and beyond in terms of e_ort to help me acheive my true potential. Not only an extremely amazing
teacher who made you fall in love with the concepts(One ofthe BEST lectures ofJEE Combinatorics in my opinion I have ever attended was
his class!!) but also a big brother with whom you can share your life's personal problems and also.joke about things. lwould literally call him
at random times regarding various "fuars" and "stress factors" of mine and he would always give me just the right advice I need in that
moment! ltruly feelextremely lucky to have met such an amazingteacher/guidefriend l!
Thank you for everything sir!!

A "teacher" is an understatement forShatru Sir. He is a three dimensional being - A teacher, a friend and a guide. ljoined Sir,s institute in
class l1with the hopes ofjoining an llT. And now after 2.5 yearc offun-filled classes, where having fun w€nt at par with academics, it's safe
to say I have been able to fulfillthat dream. Sir's fluid technique ofteaching the concepts, innumerable sums of all levels of di_culty, various
tricks, exam strategies and doubt-clearing sessions were certainly of the upmost help. All-in-all sir is the perfect teacher a JEE aspirant
needs.Notto mention sir's motivational speeches which helped us immenselywheneverwe felt down orwere nervous before exams.
-Srinioy Ghosh, llT Roorkee

shatru sir is a brilliant teacher and he makes a complex subject like mathematics easy and enjoyable. He kept
us motivated throughout
and never hesitated in clearing our any of doubts. Under his guidance we practiced a lot of problems from
each topic within a time
which helped us a lot in competitive exams. Being his student was truly a great experience.
-Areesh-Ul-Eimaan, l5l Kolkata

shatru sir has always been a great mentor, friend and teacher. Treating the class to some patties
after a long class or cracking some
jokes in the middle, he always manages to lift the student's
spirits. He explains complex topics very intuitiv;ly and makes sure every
student has understood the concept well. Sometimes the class would become so
interesting that i would lose track of time. shatru sir
always kept motivating us and pushed us to achieve our best. He has made
me fall in love with math.
