DIRECT AND INVERSE VARIATION

1. Gaurav takes 15 minutes to cover 1000 m by foot. Assuming that he does not slow down
and continues walking with the same speed, find the time taken to cover 1400 m.
2. One liter of juice can fill 5 glasses. How many liters are required to fill 13 glasses ?
3. 120 books of the same size are packed in 5 boxes. How many boxes are needed to pack
216 similar books ?
4. A car travels 47 km with 4 liters of petrol. How much petrol will be needed to travel a
distance of 235 km ?
5. The scale of a map is given as 1 : 2500000 . If the distance between two towns on the
map is 5 cm, what is the actual distance in km ?
6. A contractor employs 56 men to lay a road. He agrees to get the work done in 15 days.
But the authorities want the work to be completed in 10 days. How many more men
should he employ ?
7. A hostel has sufficient stock of food for 500 students to last for 60 days, How long will
the provisions last if 125 students leave the hostel ?
8. A car travels certain distance at a speed of 45 kmph in 5 hours. What must be the speed
of the car to cover the same distance in 4 hours ?
9. Revathy starts her journey to a certain city at 9:00 am and reaches her destination at
1: 00 pm, if she travels at a speed of 30 kmph.
i) Find the time taken by Revathy to reach her destination.
ii) Calculate the distance she travelled .
iii) By how much should she increase her speed so that she can reach at 12 noon ?
10. Nita invited ten of herfriends for her birthday. She ordered red velvet cake , pizza and
juice.
i) The cost of 2 kg cake is ₹ 500. If she ordered a 5 kg cake, how much did she pay for
it ?
ii) If each of them had 2 slices of pizza, how many slices did they have totally ?
iii) The rent for the party hall was ₹ 1200 for 2 hours , how much did she have to pay if
her party began at 5 pm and ended at 8:30 pm ?
