Ex 1) It is inevitable that as technology develops so traditional cultures must be lost.

Technology and tradition are incompatible – you cannot have both together.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer.

Without any question, nobody can decide whether technology or

traditional culture is more important. It is generally believed that it is
inevitable that as technology develops so traditional culture would be lost.
However, it is also argued that technology is not an enemy but can be a
friend of cultures. This essay will argue that technology and traditional
culture are not incompatible, for several reasons.

Some conservative people believe that modern technology could

deteriorate traditional cultures because, for example, young people want to
sing pop songs and to copy the moves of their famous dance group instead
of practising their traditional dance. In addition, it has been thought that
technology could encourage people to believe that traditional cultures are
out of date.
However, I would argue that it depends on the technology because some
technology can help to keep traditional cultures. The Microsoft technology
has reached a technical level where it is possible to save a lot of information
that would otherwise be lost, including historical materials such as song
recordings in a small chip. Another benefit of technology is that countries
can broadcast their own cultures all over the world. With the help of internet
and mobile technology, we can access other countries’ traditional
information via websites and also introduce our own traditional cultures to
other people. The most important factor in which technology can help
traditional culture is that we can develop our culture in a modern style.
People should not be obstinate so that they are never willing to change their
own cultures.

In conclusion, certain technology might be harmful to traditional culture,

but, on the whole, it is compatible and could be helpful. Therefore, people
should not think of technology negatively, but should find a good way in
which we can use technology as a good partner of traditional culture.
Nowadays, new technology has become a new culture in the world.
Ex 2) The idea of having a single career is becoming an old fashioned one. The new
fashion will be to have several careers or ways of earning money and further
education will be something that continues throughout life.

Education is, without doubt, the single most important aid to employment. This is
because, increasingly, a single career is rare. People can expect to have several jobs
in several unrelated industries before retirement. It is wise, then, to maintain a high
education level in order to remain employable and flexible for future earning
potential. This essay will examine three reasons why education will indeed be
something that continues throughout life

Education will continue throughout life because students will no longer have
funding for full-time degree courses. In my country full-time Higher Education is
subsidised by loans. This means that students are learning education with massive
amount of debt. With unstable employment opportunities, even for graduate
students will probably change direction and focus on part-time study to off-set these
incurred charges.
Another reason is because of the unreliable nature of modern industry. Just one
generation ago it was possible to train in one field, e.g., steelworker or teacher, and
to remain in that position for one’s entire career. Today, however, companies are
born, flourish and disappear with astonishing regularity.
A final reason is because of changing social patterns. More young people are
leaving school with substandard qualification find their career paths through work
experience, they will return to Higher Education to gain the qualifications they need
to progress. For example, teenager who hated maths at school, many return to
study accountancy after getting involved with an audit company.

It is clear that not only will education be necessary throughout life, but it will be
desired. In my opinion, the international education system should be revolutionised
so that compulsory education covers life skills training and Higher Educational
institutions specialise in research, training and academic analysis. Such changes
would inspire and challenge people to stretch its intellectual capacity.
Ex 3) In many countries children are engaged in some kind of paid work. Some
people regard this as completely wrong, while others consider it as valuable work
experience, important for learning and taking responsibility.

What are your opinions on this?

The issue of children doing paid work is a complex and sensitive one. It is difficult to
say who has the right to judge whether children working is ‘wrong’ or ‘valuable’.
Opinions will also differ as to ‘learning’ benefits: no doubt teachers and factory
owners, for example, would have varying concerns.

An important consideration is the kind of work undertaken. Young children doing

arduous and repetitive tasks on a factory production line, for example, are less likely
to be ‘learning’ than older children helping in an old people’s home. There are
health and safety issues to be considered as well. It is an unfortunate fact that
many employers may prefer to use the services of children simply to save money by
paying them less than adults and it is this type of exploitation that should be
discouraged.

However, in many Countries children work because their families need the
additional income, no matter how small. This was certainly the case in the past in
many industrialized countries, and it is very difficult to judge that it is wrong for
children today to contribute to the family income in this way.

Nevertheless, in better economic circumstances, few parents would choose to send

their children out to full-time paid work. If learning responsibilities and work
experience are considered to be important, then children can acquire these by
having light, part-time jobs or even doing tasks such as helping their parents around
the family home, which are unpaid, but undoubtedly of value in children’s
development.
Ex 4) Computers are increasingly used in the classroom. How effective are
computers at teaching children to write?
To what extent to do you think that computers hinder rather than help younger
student?

Computers are, without doubt, the most important instrument in modern life. It is
generally believed that children should learn computer skills in the classroom.
However, it is argued that typing by computer instead of writing by hand is harmful
to younger students. This essay will argue that there are three drawbacks in using
computers in order of teach children to write.

First of all, if younger students use computers to type, they could be interested in
computer games or chatting and surfing websites. They could become addicted to
computers. As a result of addiction to computers, they could lose interest in their
studies. Another disadvantage of using computers in the classroom is that younger
students’ eye sight can be harmed because of harmful rays from computer screens.
It is obvious that children’s eye sight in developed countries is worse than that in
underdeveloped countries where children can not afford to use computers in the
classroom.

The most significant drawback to this is that if younger students use computers to
write, they could be illiterate and not be able to write correctly and accurately. For
example, in Korea, many young children use computers to chat and to send e-mails.
Most of them make many grammar mistakes and also tend to change characters,
which are understandable to younger children but adults can not understand the
characters.

In conclusion, using computers in the classroom has many drawbacks which are the
addiction to computers, the loss of eye sight and illiteracy. For these reasons,
governments should prevent teachers from using computers in the classroom, even
for educational purposes. Moreover, parents should not allow their children to
become addicted to computers.
Ex 5)

Without question Education is an inalienable right to everyone. Furthermore,

whether exam or assessment produces better students is a controversial issue. It is
generally believed that exams are feasible, justifiable and effective. However,
another viewpoint holds that assessment is appropriate, cost-effective and ethical.
This essay will compare and explain the advantages of both and will provide a
balanced conclusion. Are exams an accurate method for assessment of students, or
is it possible to assess reasonably by assessment?

On the one hand, undoubtedly, the most important advantage of assessment is that
all students can be evaluated appropriately their academic progress. This is
because teachers can evaluate students through overall observation. Another
advantage is that if teacher assesses students, it could save money for exams.
Finally, it reduces stress and tension for both teachers and students.

On the other hand, exams are very convenient to assess students because teachers
can take statistic results from the exams whereas assessment has the disadvantage
to be difficult take the numerical value. In addition, it is fair to evaluate students in
comparison with the fact that assessment is difficult to exclude teachers’ personal
bias and parents’ selfish begging. The most important advantage is that exams can
motivate students to study hard. If students do not have exam, they could lost their
time and do not study hard. In my experience, while most students were preparing
for exam they studied very hard.

We can conclude that exams are a good way to develop students. Thus, I believe
students are improving their knowledge by preparing exams and it is necessary to
keep exam policy for development of students.
Ex 6)

Environmental problems are, without doubt, significant to human life. It is generally

believed that the government should regulate the level of companies’ pollution in
order to protect the environment, though many companies already control their
resources efficiently and their process of production. This essay will examine what
roles governments have to do for solving the environmental problems.

First of all, modern society has significant pollution problems, as a result, many
people are affected, and therefore the government should try to keep the
environment clean for people’s health. The government may need budget to
improve the environment, for example, it should raise the taxation of oil as well as
the taxation of companies that produce high levels of pollution. Furthermore, the
government should spend the revenue to keep the environment clean, for example,
the government could spend the money on researching new technological energy
which can decrease pollution.
In addition to control the environment directly the government should control
companies by posing a penalty for excessive waste. Also the government should
check every company which produces products made of chemical materials. For
example, in Korea, the government employs many staff to monitor companies all
around the country. The level of pollution of the companies should be checked
regularly by them.

In conclusion, the governments could raise the taxation to spend for improving the
environment as well as could pose a penalty for excessive waste. Moreover, the
government should not trust the spontaneous effort of companies to keep a low
level of pollution, but the government should try to keep the environment clean.
EX 7)

The internet changes, without any doubt, human life and relationships. It is believe
that the internet should effect to have on social interaction. However, it could be
thought that it would open up new communication possibilities worldwide. This
essay will argue that, like any other technologies, it can be effective, rational and
beneficial in modern societies..

Undoubtly, the most significant negative effect to this is that the more time people
use the internet, the less time they spend with real human beings. They are
becoming isolated in society, because they live in cyberspace instead of real life.
Furthermore, many long-time internet users could have health problems. Especially,
they would be weak in sight and could have a backbone ache.

Despite of these disadvantages, one advantage of the internet is that it is effective

to work anywhere and to communicate worldwide anytime. Moreover, it is rational
to get a large number of useful information in short time. Unquestionably, the most
important advantage is that it is very beneficial to our life. For example, the
development of the internet makes many jobs for people. Many people work for
either Internet Company or relevant jobs. In Korea, internet business is very
prosperous part.

In conclusion, the internet would be harmful to some people who can not use it in
moderation but spend long time in cyberspace, however, it is very effective to work,
easy to get a useful information and can make many jobs. For these reason, nobody
can deny that it gives more useful benefit to people.
Ex 8)

Technology brings, without doubt, problems as well as benefits to humankind. The

technological development of personal computer has changed our lives. Since 1980,
personal computers have become common in homes, schools, and businesses.
However, they have brought two main unexpected problems.

The first problem caused by computers concerned communication. This is

because we receive junk messages we do not want. Furthermore, the lack of
censorship in cyberspace is another problem that no one has solved yet. Our
expanded ability to communicate means that anyone with a computer can
communicate anything to anyone on any subject at any time. Therefore, a
computer-literate child can receive pornographic photos and listen to chat-room
conversations about sex.

In addition to problems in communications, computers have also caused problems

in business. They have created excellent opportunities for computerized crime.
Computer hackers use their skills to obtain secret business information and to steal
money. In addition, banks worry that hackers will learn how to transfer money out
of customers’ accounts into their own. Moreover, the use of computers has
depersonalized business. People are no longer customers otherwise, they are
account numbers. Companies only want to know customer’s number. Face-to-face
business transactions are no longer necessary. For example, people can buy almost
anything they need by computer, phone, or fax. Furthermore, as telecommuting
becomes more common, workers in the same company interact with each other less
and less. Social isolation may be an unexpected cost of the computer revolution.

It is clear that personal computers have made our lives easier, but they have
done so at a cost. As with every new invention, there have been unforeseen
consequences. It is up to us to find the solutions to the problems as well as to enjoy
the conveniences of this new tool.
Ex 9) News editors decide what to broadcast on television and what to print in
newspapers. What factors do you think influence these decisions? Do we become
used to bad news? Would it be better if more good news was reported?

Receiving information is, without doubt, inalienable right to everyone. It is generally

believe that News editors should decide what to broadcast and what to print in
terms of importance, usefulness and educational purpose. However, it is also
suggested that bad news should be reported. This essay will discuss several factors
that influence the decision to report the news [bad & good].

Firstly, one important factor deciding to report is an importance of the news as there
is a log of news in the world. It is impossible to report all news, thus, editors should
select more important news to report.

In addition to importance, usefulness is also a significant factor to select news.

There is a lot of important news nowadays. Thus, it is difficult to report all of
important news. Hence, editors should select more useful news for people in stead
of counting their profits.

Finally, the most important factor of selecting the news is the educational purpose.
Editor should report more educational news for people, especially, adolescences,
because some adolescence can copy the crime reported. For example, In 1996,
some adolescences had robbed a bank in Korea. After that they were captured, they
confessed that they had copied a News story which had been reported on TV before
a month. This case shows us clearly how serious bad news to teenagers is.

In conclusion, bad news also could be reported. However, news editors should
consider the importance, usefulness and educational purpose of the news.
Therefore, all editors should select the news in the basis of effects of people
Ex 10)

Education is, without doubt, an inalienable right for everyone. It is generally

believed that education is the only most crucial factor in the development of a
developing country. This essay will present several reasons why education is so
important to development.

First of all, education can help the improvement of technology. People can learn the
knowledge and skills on the ground of technology such as Microsoft and computer
technology through Higher Education. Technology can support countries’ economies
because the high technological products are much more expensive than agricultural
products. In other words, the industry of technology is lucrative.

In addition to the economic reason, education can help the improvement of politics.
Politicians have to be more educated than civilians. If the leader of one country is
not well educated, this country can not develop.

Finally, education can help to reduce the rate of crime. For instance, the rate of
crime in underdeveloped countries is higher than that in developed countries. Many
young teenagers, who do not go to school, commit many serious juvenile criminals
and also uneducated people tend to be more aggressive than educated people. This
is because uneducated people tend to have less responsibility for others and
society.

In conclusion, for these three reasons which are economic, politic and criminal
benefits, many people believe that education is an important factor in development.
Therefore, the governments of developing countries should make an effort to
educate their people.
If children commit any kind of crime, should their parents be responsible for their
children’s fault?
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Without any question, all crimes should be punished. It is generally believed that if
children commit any kind of crimes, their parents should be punished instead of
them. However, it could be argued at what age children can be responsible for
themselves. This essay will discuss several reasons why parent are responsible for
their children’s crimes,

One reason for parental responsibility is that parents are obliged to educate their
children to behave correctly. Parent should be the best teacher for their children,
according to their cultural, religious and ethical beliefs.

Another reason for parental responsibility is that parents have responsibility to

prevent their children from committing crimes. This is because many reasons why
adolescences commit crimes originate in the home, e.g. dissatisfaction with their
parents reaction against family circumstance. In addition, domestic violence could
be a reason why children act violently to others.

The most important reason why parents are responsible for their child’s faults is
that parents have a responsibility for taking care of their children. For example,
more youngsters whom their parent neglect to take care of, make more serious
crimes than their friends who are well taken care of by their parents. The
youngsters want their parents to play with them. However, many youngsters are
isolated from their parents.

In conclusion, it might be difficult that parents prevent their children from

committing crimes. However, parents should be responsible for their children
because of responsibility of education, guidance and caring. As the number of
adolescent crimes is growing, parents are required to heed and educate their
children’s behavior.
Some employers reward members of staffs for their exceptional contribution to the
company by giving them extra money. This practice can act as an incentive for
some but may also have a negative impact on others.
To what extent is this style of management effective?
Are there better ways of encouraging employees to work hard?

Encouraging employees is, without any doubt, the single most important factor to
management of company effectively. Some people suggest that employers should
pay a contributive employee for extra money in order to encourage other
employees to work hard. However, it is also argued that it could build tension
between employees. This essay will discuss several reasons why employers should
not pay extra money to particular employee.

An important reason why employers should not pay extra money is that it is difficult
to judge who contributes more to the company. It is not easy to make a reasonable
standard to select more contributive staff. However, most staff contribute to their
company, thus they can deserve it.

Another reason for this is that it could build tension between them. The only person
who is rewarded could be encouraged, whereas the others who expected to be
rewarded, could be discouraged. Therefore, the loss will be bigger than the gain.

The most significant reason for this is that employers can choose other methods
instead of giving money. Employers can reward the contributive staff by giving
promotion. For example, the best Korean company, SK Telecom promotes a woman
who is 28 years old as a director of their company because of her exceptional
contribution.

In, conclusion, although it cannot be denied that employers could encourage their
staff by paying extra money to the contributive staff, it is clear that paying extra
money to particular workers could make more problems. Therefore, employers
should find other way to reward good workers.
According to a recent study, the more time people use the Internet, the less time
they spend with real human beings. Should we worry about the effect this is having
on social interaction or should we see the Internet as a way of opening up new
communication possibilities worldwide?
