Hi Kerry,
How are you and your family? Guess what? I was watching TV last night when I came across a
programme about education in the future. I immediately thought about you because I know you plan to
become a teacher when you leave school. According to the TV programme, it looks like schools will look a
lot different very soon. To begin with, online learning will (31) traditional learning in
classrooms at school. This also means that a lot of parents will take control of their children’s education and
teach them at home. For those students still in a classroom, AI teaching assistants will (32)
them when they need extra help and there will be lots of new equipment, too. Some of it, you will recognise
from all the gaming you do. Virtual reality will provide students with real- (33) experiences,
but in the digital world. It will be (34) you are really there, watching, for example, the events
from hundreds of years ago in a history lesson. Also, it is likely that students will use websites instead of the
old textbooks we use right now, and hologram (35) will make objects appear and really bring
subjects to life. It seems to me that learning will definitely be a lot more fun in the future. How it will be for
you as a teacher in the future, I’m not so sure about!

Free Time in the Future
Our ancestors worked 7 days a week with little free time. Then it became 6 days, and now most of us
work 5 days a week. These days, we have more free time than at any time before and with technology
helping us at home and at work, we will have even more in the future. So what will we do with all this free
time?
There will still be theatres, cinemas and concert halls, but we will not go there as often. Actors will
perform in plays which will stream as holograms in our homes and so will our favourite bands or singers in
live concerts. We won’t need to visit the cinema to see new films as they will be available online
immediately.
There won’t be as many parks where we can all walk or run, but some of us will get fit at home.
Buildings will have gardens on their roofs with special areas for running. These areas will also stop heat
getting into the building and save us energy as we won’t have to use air conditioning.
Gaming is big business with the young and the old these days and it will continue to be in the future. More
powerful consoles will bring bigger and better worlds of adventure to every home. Virtual reality headsets
will put players in the heart of the action and it will feel like they are really there.
What about those hobbies (OR other things we do in our free time) that give us so much pleasure,
though? Will we still do or collect the same things or will that change, too? Experts say that some free-time
activities we did in the past will return such as knitting and woodwork. The things people collect, though,
will perhaps be the things we have at home today. So don’t throw away your old toys, comics and board
games because they could be worth a lot one day.
36. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. It isn’t easy to get time off from work these days.
B. The amount of free time workers enjoy has increased.
C. Workers will soon choose how much free time they get.
D. There will be no need to work in the years to come.
37. The writer says that a garden on the roof will .
A. be the perfect place to have a gym B. improve the way we feel about ourselves
C. provide us with fresh fruit and vegetables D. keep the rooms in the buildings cool
38. Which of the following is NOT true about the future according to the passage?
A. Holograms will replace actors in films.
B. Playing a video game will become more exciting.
C. We will enjoy live performances in our living rooms.
D. Old-fashioned hobbies will become more popular.
39. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Video games will be a lot more expensive in the future.
B. Some modern hobbies will not exist in the years to come.
C. Ordinary objects could increase in value over the years.
D. Gaming will become the most popular hobby for all age groups.
40. Which word is closest in meaning to pleasure in the last paragraph?
A. leisure B. relaxation C. entertainment D. excitement
C. Read the following passage. For each of the questions, from 41 to 45, write T if the statement is TRUE
and F if the statement is FALSE.
Harley’s blog
Hi, readers! I saw a really interesting documentary last night about new technology. It doesn’t just affect
our schools, our homes and our cities; it affects our jobs, too. Part of the documentary showed just how
much technology will change the world of work in the future, and I know many of you are teens facing
career choices very soon.
To begin with, there will probably be floating offices on lakes and on the sea. This is because people
will build houses on all the green spaces and there will be less room for new buildings on land. Also, more
people will definitely work from home. For example, people will do work online and send it to an office.
That will probably result in fewer office buildings in the centre of the city.
On the other hand, some people may lose their jobs in the future. Consider the example of robots. These
will replace some people. Robots have already replaced some factory workers, but now they will begin to
replace other jobs, too. In addition, traditional jobs will certainly disappear. For instance, some shops won’t
accept cash so that will mean fewer cashiers.
The jobs we do and the way we do them might be very different in the future. I think that the future will be a
great place to work as long as we can find jobs for all the people that may lose their jobs. We mustn’t forget
about them. So what are your opinions, readers? Leave me your thoughts in the comments below.
41. Harley saw a TV programme about technology in education.

IV. READING (3.0 points)
A. Read the following passage and choose the correct word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered
blanks.
Hi Max,
You asked me what I’m doing at school at the moment. We’re doing all the usual stuff, but there’s one exciting
thing that I’m really enjoying - it’s a project on cities in the future. It’s really interesting to see how
everything will change.
Take travelling on roads for example. Hi-tech roads will use the latest technology to communicate with cars and
will be able to (31) up-to-date information about traffic jams or other problems facing
drivers. Also, there will be roads that are underground which will mean drivers can (32) all the
bad weather on the roads above them.
It’s not just vehicles that’ll be different in the future, though – the streets and skies will be, too. Crowds walking
on the streets will be quicker because we’ll all use walkways that move like the ones that we already have in
airports to get us to our planes on time. I’ll be able to do all my shopping a lot quicker!
Look up and we’ll see drones flying around the sky which can take off and land from very small spaces,
making all our deliveries for us. My only worry is that they (33) fly into something or
someone. I hope the experts have thought about that and made them 100% safe!
The city of the future will (34) look very different. Personally, I can’t wait! Write back soon
and tell me what you’re doing at school. I (35) it won’t be as good as what I’m studying right
now!
All the best,
Harry

B. Read the passage and choose the correct answer to each of the following questions.
SHOPPING TOMORROW
New technology doesn’t just affect our schools, our homes and our cities; it affects shopping, too.
Heading out to the mall or high street and spending a few hours buying things is perhaps the number one
hobby for most of us. We may have to rethink that hobby, though, as technology will change the way we
buy and sell things in the future.
To begin with, the shops themselves will be incredibly hi-tech. Take smart mirrors for example. With
these, we’ll be able to try on clothes virtually. Touch the interactive screen, choose the item, and all we’ll
have to do is stand there to see ourselves wearing the latest trends. Paying for our purchases will be
different, too, as some businesses won't accept cash so we’ll use cards instead of coins and notes. These are
just a few of the many changes the physical shop will go through.
The future might not be bright for some people, though. One major problem is that a lot of small high
street businesses will close in the future. We’ll buy most things online and won’t always get our groceries at
the local shop. Another sad fact is that some jobs in shops will disappear. Remember paying for everything
by card; well, that means these shops won’t need as many cashiers to take our money, just someone to be
there when anything goes wrong.
Shopping in the future will be a great experience if we’re shoppers with plenty of money. Some people,
though, won’t be able to afford to shop as a free time activity because they’ve lost their jobs. Even bargain
hunting may be too expensive for them as they won't be able to afford to buy anything no matter how low
the cost will be. Hopefully, the changing world of shopping will find new opportunities for these people, and
everyone, including them, can carry on shopping.
36. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. Shopping will become even more popular in the future.
B. Shopping is a social experience for many of us.
C. There is a wide variety of places where we can shop.
D. Technology will have a major effect on the way we shop.
37. The writer says that in the future shopping will .
A. become an activity we mostly do online
B. be an enjoyable experience for everyone
C. cost more because of all the new technology
D. take place in neighbourhood shops at all
38. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Some physical shops will only allow customers to pay by card.
B. We won’t need to try on clothes to see if they are the correct size.
C. There will be lots of job opportunities on the high street.
D. We will not be able to visit as many physical shops as we do now.
39. What can be inferred about the writer from the text?
A. He is disappointed about how our shopping habits will change.
B. He is worried about some of the changes technology will bring.
C. He is upset about us spending too much time spending money.
D. He is surprised no one is helping the people losing their jobs.
40. Which word/phrase is closest in meaning to bargain hunting in the third paragraph?
A. searching for the best shops B. looking for very cheap items
C. shopping with other people D. arguing over prices in shops

C. Read the following passage. For each of the questions, from 41 to 45, write T if the statement is TRUE
and F if the statement is FALSE.
The House of the Future
The world is always changing. There are new inventions and new technologies all the time, and, even if we
don’t realise it’s happening, our lives change alongside that technology. One place where we will definitely
see changes in the future is the houses we live in.
To begin with, we will have 3D printed houses, although we will still use traditional building methods. This new
style of home will be cheaper than brick ones and take half the time to build. Furthermore, these houses will
be better for the environment as they will use solar energy or wind power. Also, we will be able to recycle
rainwater and use it to drink, wash and clean.
Secondly, the house will be full of technology. Smart fridges will order food for us, smart cookers will suggest
meals and then cook them, and there will be interactive screens on every surface. Robots will do the chores
that we don’t enjoy such as mopping the floor, making the beds and ironing clothes.
It’s not all good news, though. Those 3D printed house may be cheaper, but with limited space, they will need to
build them outside of the city. Inside the city, more and more people will probably live in apartment
buildings. This is because the cost of a regular house there will be too expensive for most people. Also, the
houses that exist there will not always have gardens as there will not be enough space for them in the
crowded city. We will have fewer and fewer green spaces where we can all go to walk, exercise or have
picnics in these overcrowded cities.
The house of the future will probably not look very different to the house of today on the outside, but living
inside it will be a very different experience for all of us.

41. Building materials like bricks will disappear in the future.

42. Houses won’t have to depend on fossil fuels in the future.
43. Robots will be able to prepare meals for us in the kitchen.
44. Living in a house in the city will be cheaper than it is today.
45. In the future, there will not be as many parks as today.

→ Some people .
48. I'm not sure that all means of transport will be faster and energy-efficient soon.

B. Use the given words to make complete sentences.
49. The weather / be / bad / right now / so / they / not test / drone / later today.

50. There / not be / certainly / free Internet access / all public places / all over the world / next five years.
