POSTER MAKING
WHAT IS A POSTER?
Posters are placards displayed in a public place announcing or advertising something.
Posters are notices, advertisements and invitations.
PURPOSE OF POSTERS
The purpose of designing a poster is either to create social awareness about issues related to
current problems and needs, or to advertise or even to extend public invitations and display
notices.
DRAFTING POSTERS
Posters should be attractive and tempting.
(i) They must be drafted carefully to attract the attention of the readers, excite their
imagination and influence their minds.
(ii) Posters are read from a distance. Do not give many details in a poster. Highlight only
important issue/issues.
MAIN FEATURES OF A POSTER
(a) Layout
● Visually attractive/Eye Catching
● Title-suggestive/catchy
● Use slogan, jingle or short verse
● Sketch or simple drawings
● Letters of different size and shape
● Proportionate spacing, etc
(b) Contents
● The theme or subject of the poster
● Description or details associated with the theme
● Essential details like time, date, venue (for an event)
● Name(s) of issuing authority/organisation, etc
(c) Expression
● Phrases, slogans, persuasive language
● Creativity in terms of content and design
● Overall organisation and sequencing of the matter
● Observe word limit (usually 50)

Things to remember
1. It should not strictly exceed the prescribed word limit of 50 words.
2. It should be in a box.
3. Make sure you double check for grammatical accuracy and spellings. They carry
marks.
4. Practice previous year Question paper questions.
Do’s
1. Make sure it fits within one page only.
2. Use sharpened pencils.
3. Bold or underline important information.
DON'Ts
1. No usage of short forms or slangs. It is not acceptable.
2. Don’t exceed the prescribed word limit.
Sample 1
You are a fitness trainer in a health club. Design a poster in not more than 50 words, to emphasize
the importance of exercise in maintaining mental and physical fitness. You are Prem/Priya.
Answer:
Sample 2
Fireworks and crackers are known to create pollution during festivals. As an environ-mentalist
design a poster in about 50 words to create awareness of their ill effects.

importance of following traffic rules.
2. Your school is going to organise a Diwali Mela. Design a poster to inform the students about it (50
words).
