Investigating Area & Perimeter of quadrilaterals

Solved Example

Example 1

What is the perimeter of the rectangle?

Solution

Perimeter is the distance around a two-dimensional shape.

Therefore, the perimeter of this rectangle is 9 + 5 + 9 + 5 = 28
Solved Example

Example 2

The diagram shows a rectangle and a square.

If they have equal perimeters, what is the length of one side of the square?

Solution

Perimeter of the rectangle = distance around edges = 7 + 3 + 7 + 3 = 20

Since they have equal perimeters, the perimeter of the square = 20 also

But a square has four equal edges.

So the length of one side of the square = 20/4 = 5

Solved Example

Example 3

Solution

Area = w × h
w =width
h = height

The width is 6, and the height is 4, so we know w = 6 and h = 4

So: Area = 6 × 4 = 24

Example 4

If a wire having a length of 96 cm is folded to form a square, how long will each side be?

Solution

The length of the wire is 96 cm and this is equal to the perimeter of the square that is created.

Since the 4 sides of the square have the same length, each side will be one-quarter of the length of
the wire; so, to find the length of a side we calculate

Example 5

The sum of the perimeters of two squares is 108 mm.If the side length of one of them is 2 mm,
find the side length of the other square in millimeters.

Solution

It can be helpful to sketch what we know to help us see how to answer the question. We know that
there are two squares; let’s call them A and B.

One of the squares has side lengths equal to 2 mm; we will say that that is Square A. So, the
question is asking us to find the side length of Square B. We will denote the unknown side length
by 𝑥

Example 6

The parallel sides of a trapezoid have lengths 82 and 70. If the height is 100, what is the trapezoid’s
area?

Solution
Solved Example

Example 7

Solution

We can use the given area of the trapezoid and the lengths of the two parallel bases to form an
equation where ℎ represents the unknown height of the trapezoid:

We now solve this equation to determine the value of ℎ. Simplifying the left-hand side gives
