PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Project Title:

Sign Language Recognition to Text and Voice Using CNN

Project Description:

This project aims to develop an intelligent system that recognizes sign language gestures and
converts them into text and speech. Using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), the system
processes real-time hand gestures to facilitate communication between individuals with hearing or
speech impairments and the general public. The proposed system will enhance accessibility and
inclusivity by providing an effective means of interaction.

Objectives:

- To develop a deep learning model using CNN for sign language recognition.
- To convert recognized gestures into meaningful text and voice outputs.
- To create an interactive and user-friendly interface for real-time communication.
- To improve communication accessibility for individuals with speech and hearing disabilities.
- To optimize the model for real-time performance with high accuracy.

Methodology:

- Data Collection: Gather an extensive dataset of sign language gestures.

- Preprocessing: Apply image augmentation, normalization, and feature extraction.
- Model Development: Train a CNN model to recognize hand gestures.
- Model Optimization: Fine-tune hyperparameters for improved accuracy.
- Integration: Convert recognized gestures into text and speech.
- Deployment: Develop a web or mobile application for real-time use.

Technologies Used:

- Programming Language: Python

- Deep Learning Framework: TensorFlow/Keras
- Computer Vision: OpenCV
- Speech Synthesis: gTTS (Google Text-to-Speech)
- Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript
- Backend: Flask/Django

Challenges Addressed:

- Accurate recognition of diverse hand gestures in varying lighting conditions.

- Handling multiple sign languages and gesture variations.
- Optimizing model performance for real-time inference.
- Reducing computational complexity to enable efficient deployment on edge devices.

Expected Outcomes:

- A functional AI-driven system that translates sign language gestures into text and voice.
- A user-friendly interface for real-time communication.
- Enhanced accessibility for the hearing and speech-impaired community.
- A scalable solution that can be expanded to support multiple sign languages.
