your academic work. You must specify the issue and decide how to explore it in your paper.
Components of a Prospectus:
Thesis Development: The prospectus will include a draft of your thesis. If you need guidance, refer
to the videos on thesis development (available on Blackboard, weeks 10 and 11).
Supporting Points & Sources: Include references to the sources you will use to support your
argument.
Consider the audience's expectations: Do they understand the complexities of your approach? Are
you introducing new perspectives on well-known issues?
Flexibility: The prospectus is an action plan, not a contract. It can change based on new evidence.
The prospectus can also be a backup plan if adjustments are needed during the research process.
Audience Consideration: You need to demonstrate that you have thought through your research plan
and are prepared. A well-prepared prospectus shows effort and helps guide your research process.
Rhetorical précis collection: Include four previously written précis and add a fifth from your recent
research.
Methodology: Explain how you used research databases, conducted fieldwork (if applicable), and
any potential challenges or how you plan to overcome them.
The introduction should define the problem and justify its importance.
- The methodology section should outline your research process, potential problems, and how
you’ll address them.
