Lab 2 Report

The document outlines an experiment conducted by a computer science group on measuring the diffraction constant and wavelengths of Neon emission lines using a diffraction grating. It includes a detailed task description, theoretical background, methodology, and analysis of results. The experiment is supervised by Piotr Sobotka and is scheduled for April 7, 2025.

Diffraction Grating and Wavelengths

Measurement Methods and Verification of the Results from the Physics
Laboratory

1. Task Description:
1.1. The aim of the first experiment is to measure the diffraction constant of a
given diffraction grating being given a known wavelength of light passing
through it.
1.2. The aim of the second experiment is to measure the wavelengths Neons
emission lines being given the diffraction constant.

2. Theory Behind the Tests:

2.1. Diffraction grating equation:
2.1.1. The diffraction grating equation describes how light of a particular
wavelength (λ) diffracts at discrete angles when passing through a
grating with spacing d:

dsin(α )=n λ
Where:
● d is the spacing between adjacent slits (grating constant).
● ⍺ is the angle at which constructive interference (bright
fringes) occurs.
● n is the order of the diffraction maximum (an integer: 0, ±1, ±2,
…)
● λ is the wavelength of the incident light
2.2. Measurement errors for 1 and 2 experiment including
type a and type b

3. Measurements and Methodology

3.2. Quick schematics
3.3. Methods of obtaining the result(like the zeroing of the
scale)
3.4. Methodology of experiment 1
3.5. Methodology of experiment 2
4. Test result analysis:
4.1. Calculating the diffraction constant:
4.1.1. table with data
4.1.2. Uncertainty calculation
4.1.3. Calculating the diffraction constant
4.2. Calculating the wavelength
4.2.1. Table with data
4.2.2. Uncertainty calculation
4.2.3. Calculating the wavelength and overlaying it over
the Neons spectrum
