Task 1 – The Summer Olympics – crosswords puzzle (13p)
Line 1. A martial art in which a Hungarian woman won a gold medal in 2024.

Task 2 – A journalist’s dream experience (15p)
Imagine that you are a student at a school of journalism and have the opportunity to make an
interview with your favourite Olympic athlete after the Olympic Games 2024. Make a
conversation (150-200 words) with him/her in which you are talking about his/her age,
background, preparation, greatest accomplishment, experience and how he/she handles stress!
Your task is to create a short video about it. Be creative and use background noises,
costumes and/or setting to make it more lifelike.

Task 3 – Creative task (15p + 5p)
Create a memory game – a set of 30 cards: 15 cards each with an action verb that can be
connected to the Olympics and 15 cards with the illustrations of the verbs on the other 15
cards. Card size: 15 cm x 15 cm. You can use any technique – photos, drawings, paintings,
etc. You can decorate the other side of the cards as well (for extra points).
Task 4 – Gap-filling task (10p)
Read about the symbols, mottos and traditions of The Olympic Games and complete the
text below by writing a suitable word from the list in each space provided.

Traditions, mottos and symbols
There are many traditions, mottos and symbols ………………….to the
Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Olympic motto is: ‘Citius, Altius,
Fortius’. It was introduced in 1924 and translates to ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’.
The current Paralympic motto is ‘Spirit in Motion’. This
was………………………… at the 2004 Games in Athens. The previous motto,
introduced in 1994, was ‘Mind, ………………………Spirit’.
The Olympic………………… was developed in 1914 and made its first appearance at the
1920 Games in Antwerp. It has five different-coloured interlinked rings: blue, yellow, black,

Opening and closing ceremonies
The opening ceremony of an Olympic or Paralympic Games is always a huge ……………..

their local culture, as well as the athletes and the Games. During the opening ceremony of the
Olympic Games, the procession of athletes is always led by the Greek team, followed by all
other teams in alphabetical order (in the language of the hosting country), except for the last
team which is always the team from the hosting country. The closing ceremony is often a
smaller occasion than the opening, but it is a great chance
to celebrate the athletes and their ………………….. Unlike
the opening ceremony, the athletes all enter together,
rather than as nation groups.
Medal ceremonies
At an Olympic or Paralympic medal ceremony the gold medallist presents in the centre of the
podium, the silver medallist is on their right and the bronze medallist on their left. Medals are
placed around the winners’ necks and their countries’ flags are raised. The national …..

Flame and torch relays
The tradition of a relay to move the Olympic flame from Greece to the ……….……………in
the host country began at the Berlin Games in 1936. The torch (usually designed by the host
country) is lit by concentrating the rays of the sun with a parabolic reflector at the site of the
ancient Games in Olympia. The torch is then carried all over the world by athletes, celebrities,
world leaders and ordinary people, until it arrives at the opening ceremony where it is used to
light a cauldron. This signifies the beginning of the Games. The …….…………….. is usually
lit when a torch bearer touches the torch to the cauldron, but there have been some more
interesting ways, such as with a bow and flaming arrow in Barcelona (1992) and an airborne
running man in Beijing (2008).
