About
Indian Statistical
Institute

Founded by the visionary statistician Professor P.C. Mahalanobis in


Kolkata on December 17, 1931, the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI)
is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions dedicated to
statistics and allied disciplines such as mathematics, computer
science, economics, etc. The institute was recognized as an Institution
of National Importance by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1959
and operates under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme
Implementation. In addition to its headquarters in Kolkata, ISI has
established centers in Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, and Tezpur, further
expanding its reach and impact.

ISI is celebrated for its rigorous academic programs, cutting-edge


research, and global impact on analytical sciences. With a
distinguished faculty of over 250 members, the institute has fostered
groundbreaking contributions in diverse fields, earning accolades
such as the Padma Shri and Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awards.

Notable alumni and faculty include C.R. Rao, a recipient of the U.S.
National Medal of Science for his foundational work in statistics;
K.R. Parthasarathy, a pioneer in quantum probability; and
Ritabrata Munshi, a Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize laureate for
advancements in number theory. These luminaries exemplify ISI’s
legacy of intellectual leadership and innovation.

In addition to its postgraduate and Ph.D. programs, ISI is actively


involved in Continuing Education and Research & Development,
focusing on areas important to both industry and government. By
bridging theoretical knowledge with practical applications, the
institute continues to contribute significantly to advancements in
analytical sciences and related fields.

ISI North-East
Centre

The North-East Centre of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), established in 2011, is
located in Punioni, Tezpur. The campus is designed to foster a sustainable and green
environment, providing a peaceful and engaging setting for students and faculty. It is the
fourth centre of ISI, complementing the existing centres in Delhi, Bangalore, and Chennai.

The North-East Centre offers a one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Statistical Methods and
Analytics and is actively engaged in training and research. Its major research units include
the Applied and Official Statistics Unit, Socio-Economic Research Unit, and Theoretical
and Applied Sciences Unit.

The Centre aims to develop a pool of skilled professionals with a strong statistical
background, contributing to fields such as planning, forecasting, data analytics, and more.
It is envisioned that the centre will play a pivotal role in enhancing the Official Statistical
System of the North-East States by bridging the gap between statistical theory and practical
applications. Through interdisciplinary collaborations and modern research methodologies,
the centre supports data-driven decision-making, policy formulation, and regional
development.

Economics. The North-East Centre, established in 2011, offers the Post Graduate
Diploma in Statistical Methods and Analytics, a rigorous one-year program that equips
students with advanced statistical and analytical skills to meet the dynamic needs of
industry and academia.

Course Structure
The North-East Centre of ISI offers a one-year Post Graduate Diploma in Statistical
Methods and Analytics, open to candidates across India. Admission to this program is
granted based on performance in a test and interview conducted by ISI. This program,
divided into two semesters, features a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip
students with both foundational and advanced skills in statistical and analytical
methods.

In the first semester, the courses include Probability Theory, Statistical Methods I,
Statistical Inference, Vectors & Matrices and Regression Methods, and Programming in
R and Python. These foundational courses provide students with essential knowledge of
probability, data analysis, inference techniques such as hypothesis testing, and
mathematical tools. Hands-on programming training ensures proficiency in R and
Python, the most widely used languages in data science, preparing students to handle
real-world data-driven challenges.

The second semester builds on this foundation with advanced courses such as Statistical
Methods II, Statistical Machine Learning, Statistical Modelling, Time Series and
Statistical Finance, and a Project. Students delve into multivariate analysis, machine
learning algorithms, Bayesian inference, forecasting, and financial data analysis. The
project component allows students to apply theoretical concepts to practical problems,
culminating in a detailed report and presentation.

The program is delivered through a blend of lectures, workshops, hands-on sessions,


and case studies, ensuring a balance between theoretical understanding and practical
application. Guided by faculty and industry experts, students graduate with a robust
skill set, ready to tackle complex challenges in data science, analytics, and finance.

By Air
The nearest airport is Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport
in Guwahati, well-connected to major domestic and international
destinations. From the airport, Tezpur is approximately a four-hour
journey by road.

By Train
The closest railway stations are Dekargaon Railway Station
(approximately 10 kilometers from the institute) and Rangapara Railway
Station (about 32 kilometers away). From these stations, local
transportation can take you directly to the campus.

By Road
Tezpur can be reached from Guwahati by road, offering a scenic journey
through the picturesque Assamese countryside. It is accessible via National
Highway 27 (Nagaon side) and National Highway 15 (Mangaldoi side).
