Assignment #3

1) What is reflective teaching?

Reflective teaching, in this article, is described as “a teacher’s practice of thinking,

writing, and/or speaking about their lessons and their teaching methods and approaches”.

Reflective teaching is practice that helps teachers break free from just lesson plan after lesson

plan, and it helps them become the best teacher they can be.

2) What are some examples of this in practice?

Some examples of this practice include: Teaching Journals, Classroom Observations,

Critical Friends, and Online groups. There are many more examples but these few I find most

helpful to understand. I am an EED student and once a week I teach with my fellow students and

supervisor in a nursery room. I try to write and reflect after every experience, much like a

teaching journal. I also get observed a few times a month and receive feedback on what I am

doing well and what I can improve on, it is my classroom observations. I also speak to some of

my friends in the same program to get critical feedback as well. All of these reflective teaching

practices have benefited me so much in the classroom.

3) Why would all teacher certification programs stress reflective teaching when training in

technology, diversity, and special needs?

Teacher certification programs emphasize reflective teaching along with training in

technology, diversity, and special needs because it helps educators to constantly improve their

instructional strategies and adapt to their students' unique needs. Technology is evolving every

day, and reflective teaching allows educators to assess whether digital tools enhance student

learning or need adjustment. Every student with special needs has different learning

requirements. By reflecting on our teaching this allows teachers to assess the effectiveness of

their instructional strategies and ensure they provide the best support possible. Lastly classrooms

are becoming very diverse, with students from various cultural, linguistic, and socio-economic

backgrounds. Reflective teaching helps educators recognize biases and adjust curriculum content

to be more inclusive.

4) Why would teacher evaluations depend on a teacher having some reflective teaching

skills/practices to be helpful?

Teacher evaluations depend on reflective teaching skills because being self-aware and

continuously improving are two key factors to professional growth. Evaluations are not just

about assessing performance; they are meant to help teachers assess and refine their instructional

methods. Evaluations are most helpful when teachers use them as a learning opportunity.

Reflective teachers can analyze their strengths and weaknesses, set goals, and implement new

strategies for improvement. Teacher evaluations are most beneficial when educators view them

not as judgments but as opportunities for growth, refinement, and student-centered improvement.

In the end the evaluations are not just for the educators, but for the students.

5) Which two reflective teaching practices listed on the website do you think you would lean

towards using as a teacher?

Like I had mentioned originally I use a few of these practices even now as a student. In

the future when I am placed in my own classroom I think the best practices for me would be

having classroom observations monthly and having a blog I can journal on. By having

assessments monthly I can find out what works in my classroom and what does not. I can also

find out if my changes are making progress or need a little more work. I would like a blog, that

way I can reach out to educators all over and receive feedback on things I can improve on in the

classroom. Having all this support is both helpful and reassuring as well. In the future I know

that I will receive the best help through these practices, which in the end will help me build as a

teacher.
