Introduction
This qualitative study experiment conducted to evaluate the effect of
mulching at Gulayan sa Paaralan located at Jose Tuason Jr.
Memorial National Highschool has consisted of Grass Mulch (GM),
Plastic Mulch (PM), Leaf Debris Mulch (LM), and No Mulch (NM)
which was used as a control by covering the soil with a layer of
organic material or plastic, mulch significantly reduces the
evaporation of watersaving both time and water resources. Organic
mulches, such as straw, wood chips, or compost, break down over
time, adding valuable organic matter to the soil. development. 3
STATEMENT OF THE
PROBLEM
Despite the increasing recognition of sustainable
agriculture practices gardeners and farmers is optimizing
water usage while ensuring high crop yields One way to
help save water and still grow lots of vegetables is by using
mulch There is a gap in understanding the impact of
mulching on water retention and yield in vegetable
gardens promoting plant growth in various agricultural
settings, its specific effects on water retention and yield in
vegetable gardens remain inadequately studied.
CONCEPTION
FRAMEWORK

Input Process Output

The effected of Crops conserves soil moisture, By providing a protective
mulching on water essential for cucumbers high layer, mulch shields plant
retention and yield water requirements by
roots from extreme
vegetable gardens at significantly reducing
temperature
gulayan evaporation.It also moderates
soil temperature creating a changes, ensuring better
stable environment for root nutrient uptake.
growth and overall plant health
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE
STUDY
Mulches improve the aesthetic value of landscape and
economic value of crops and also the mulching in agriculture
craft and mulching have a different method just like plastic
mulch rubber mulch straw pine needles and so and so on and
mulches every agricultural are using mulching method
mulching significantly improved the number of fruits per plant
and reduced the percentage of fruit abortion compared to non-
mulched control.
SCOPE AND LIMITATION
The study will investigate the impact of mulching on water
retention and yield specifically in vegetable gardens small-scale
farms. There different types of mulch materials commonly used
in vegetable gardens will be evaluated for their effectiveness in
retaining moisture in the soil and environmental conditions that
could influence the effectiveness of mulching on water retention
and yield in vegetable crops may be specific to the context of the
particular vegetable crops may not account for variations in
mulching practices, such as mulch thickness, application
methods, or timing, which could affect.
DEFINITION OF
ITEMS
Mulching - process of covering the soil in a garden with a layer of
organic or inorganic material such as straw, wood chips, plastic, or
leaves. . This helps to maintain consistent soil moisture levels, which is
essential for healthy plant growth and maximum yield.
Water retention refers to the ability of soil to hold onto moisture and
prevent it from evaporating or draining away too quickly.
Yield is the amount of produce or crops that are harvested from a
garden, field, or farm. In a vegetable garden, yield refers to the quantity
and quality of vegetables that are produced.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methodology to be

used to complete this study. This includes the
research design, the study's locale, research
participants, research instrument, data
gathering procedure, and data analysis.
RESEARCH DESIGN
The design used in the study is True experimental
research design helps investigate the cause-and-effect
relationships between the variables under study. The
research method requires manipulating an independent
variable, random assignment of participants to different
groups, and measuring the dependent variable.
RESEARCH LOCALE
The study’s locale, Jose Tuason Jr. Memorial National High
School, is situated in Brgy. Madaum Tagum City Davao Del Norte.
It is one of the ten (10) high schools in the South District. It has
seven (7) buildings and thirty-five (35) classrooms. It has forty (41)
teachers, including the school head.

The researcher choose the Jose Tuason Jr. Memorial National

High School as the study’s locale because it is where the
researcher is currently study the mulching.
This step by step on how to do mulching:

1. Prepare the area by removing any weeds or debris.

This will help the mulch to better suppress weed
growth.

2. Apply a layer of mulch evenly over the soil. The

thickness of the mulch layer will depend on the type of
mulch and the plants being mulched, but a general
guideline is to use a 2-3 inch layer.
RESEARCH
INSTRUMENT
The research instrument used for studying the effect of mulching on water
retention and yield in vegetable gardens would likely include several
components. Experimental methods such as randomized controlled trials
or field experiments may also be employed to compare the growth and
yield of crops with and without mulching. Various statistical analyses may
be used to interpret the data collected and draw conclusions about the
impact of mulching on water retention and yield in vegetable gardens.
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
The step in the mulching procedure, first prepare the
garden bed, start by removing any weeds or existing
vegetation from the area. This can be done by manually
pulling out the weeds or using a garden tool such as a
hoe. Once the bed is cleared, ensure that the soil is
evenly leveled and free from any debris or large rocks.
This will provide a smooth surface for the mulch to be
applied.
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
Avoid piling up the mulch around the base of plants or trees,
as it can lead to moisture retention and potential rot. Leave a
small gap around the stems or trunks to allow for proper air
circulation. Mulching helps to conserve soil moisture,
suppress weed growth, regulate soil temperature, and
improve soil fertility. It also adds an aesthetic appeal to the
garden.

3
ETHICAL CONSIDERATION
This study will be conducted in accordance with ethical
review guidelines. The researchers must obtain informed
consent from participants before the experiment begins and
they should be fully informed about the purpose of the study,
the procedures involved, potential risks, benefits, and their
right to withdraw from the study at any time. Researchers
should ensure the confidentiality of participants' data,
personal information should be kept secure and only used for
the purposes outlined in the study. In addition, researchers
should take steps to minimize any potential harm to
participants during the experiment.

3
DATA ANALYSIS

In order to undertake a comprehensive analysis, controlled

experiments with plots that are mulched and not mulched can be
established to allow the comparison of measurements for soil
moisture and the vegetable yield. Soil moisture should be measured
regularly using sensors, and yield data are collected in the post-
harvest season are vital to capture data for relevant comparison.
Through statistical analyses, tools can be used to determine the
difference’s significance level and the relationship between mulching
and the outcome.

3
DATA ANALYSIS

Moreover, when combined with the environmental and

seasonal factors including soil, weather conditions, and
seasonal variations, the analysis notes their pivotal role in
evaluating mulching interventions’ impacts on water
retention and enhanced vegetation growth. Collectively, it
shows how mulching integrated with gardening could
revolutionize the efficiency of water used in vegetation
production in gardens.
