The Process of Art Making #1
The Process of Art Making #1
There are three entities that one needs to consider in the process of creating a particular
piece of art.
The Artist
Art cannot be discussed without mentioning the artist or the creator. Art is an echo of a
person’s emotions. It is a description of envisioned ideas. An artist’s experiences aid in the
formation and development of a person’s subject.
There are also what we call artisans. They are the sculptors, musical composers, painters,
clay potters, dramatists, writers, and choreographers who create dance sequences, just to name a
few. An interpreter is a different kind of artist. These artists are essential in the field of
performing arts. This artist is needed by the original creator for their work to be seen, heard and
appreciated.
The Artist
An artist is someone who uses their imagination to create or produce functional art with
aesthetic value, such as a painter, sculptor, choreographer, dancer or musician. All fine artists
begin by sketching using a pencil, pen, sketchpad, or paper to exercise and establish their ideas
into artwork. They translate their imagination through paintings or other mediums of art…...,
which can include oil, watercolor sketch, etc. On the other hand, sculptors formulate art in three-
dimensional (3D) form of objects made of wood, clay, marble, or other materials. Illustrations
can work for a publishing or animation company, or they can create their own comic books. The
goal of all artists’ work is to elicit a general reaction from the viewer.
The Artisan
Craftspeople who create useful artistic items such as earrings, urns, stained glass, and
other accessories are known as artisans. Artisans learn by shadowing master craftspeople and
then practicing with ongoing study. They strive to create something novel, one of a kind, and
occasionally provocative. They devote significant time to selling and promoting their products in
various markets.
Artists vs. Artisans
Artists and artisans use their art or craft to express a vision. Paint, watercolor, pens, ink,
illustrations are used by fine artists. Whereas, artisans create jewelries, glass works, potteries, or
other functional items. Artists create aesthetically pleasing works, whereas artisans focus on
functionality and accessorizing rather than aesthetics. Typically, artists’ works are displayed in
museums or galleries, whereas artisans sell their wares at craft fairs and shops.
The main difference between an artisan and an artist is that the former is a skilled craft
worker who makes or creates things by hand, whereas the latter is a person who creates,
practices, and/or demonstrates any art.
industry around? Although the art world has many constituents, there are five main players who
form the functional group of thus creative community. These are the artists, dealers, curators,
critics and collectors.
Artists
They are the prop, the mainstay of the art world! They make art, but is making
good art sufficient enough? Their magnificent perspectives and creative endeavors must be
acknowledged and valued in order to aid in the development of a career and the opening of
doors. Galleries, exhibitions, biennials and collectors must appreciate, respect and value
artworks.
Dealers
Dealers act as advocates and marketers of the work of artists. Their main
responsibility is to identify talent, develop and artist’s profession, generate visibility, and build an
artist’s advertising, public relations, and exhibition planning in exchange for a commission on
the sale of the work.
Curators
Curators have a keen eye and a strong interest in all art forms. They use their vast
knowledge about the subject and organizational skills to coordinate art shows at museums,
galleries, and public spaces. Curators are in charge of an art show’s conceptualization, layout,
design, and execution. Curators of art also conduct artist research and write catalog essays.
Art Critics
They examine, assess, and perceive the aesthetic meaning and importance of
artwork exhibited in galleries, museums, private or public showings and other venues. Reviewers
also remark and judge the technical detail, concept, and creative expression of the art under
consideration. Critics can work for a magazine, a newspaper, a website or as a freelancer.
Collectors
It is hard to imagine the art world without collectors. They are an important part
of the art market that keeps it afloat. The contributions of art collectors are critical to the survival
of artists, dealers, galleries, and auction houses. Notable collectors wield considerable power and
can help an unidentified artist gain recognition by purchasing his work. In fact, the vast majority
of artworks housed in museums and galleries were given as gifts by collectors.
Production Process
The process of creating an artwork does not always follow a straight line. It is divided
into three parts: pre-production, production, and post-production.
a. Pre-production which includes planning, researching, scripting, story boarding, etc.
b. Production which includes the actual execution like painting, filming, recording, etc.
c. Post-production which includes the final master copy once artwork is finished.
Medium Technique
Medium is a single aspect of art that directly relates with the arrangement and presumed
finality of the artwork. It is a method of communicating a concept, knowledge, or message.
Meanwhile, an artwork of technique demonstrate the level of familiarity with the medium being
manipulated.
