The increasing use of social media (such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter,
etc.) has altered students performance at schools. The focused of this study is to identify how
students' social media usage affects their ability to complete assignments, manage time, and
stay focused on their studies. A Quantitative Approach has been applied using survey
questionnaires to achieve the objectives from grade 10 students. The results indicates that
Social Media has evolved into a tools that have positive and negative aspects. Whereas, the
positive impacts of social media is that they have access to educational resources, while the
negative impact of social media is that it become a source of distraction. Based on the results
of previous research.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
In contemporary times, social media has become so woven into the fabric of
students' daily lives that they now dictate their mode of interaction, means of acquiring
knowledge, and handling academics. A study published in Hartshorn (2010) shows how
through social media, individuals can engage in two-way communication that offers a person
or persons opportunity to share their views, be heard, and interact with many others. The
digital world offers more learning opportunities but introduces distractions that impact
students' focus, time management, and school performance. Experts debate social media's
effect on education, particularly student engagement, study habits, and grades. On Instagram,
Twitter, and Facebook, the platforms themselves also influence the conversation. Their
over-use has either brought attention to these media as proper learning tools or mere
distractions. Some offer the freedom of cooperation and inspiration, and the ability to easily
retrieve information, that these sites provide while others maintain these sites serve to
encourage procrastination, poor time management and reduction in their academic field.
Two contrasting viewpoints in this case demonstrate the urgency to investigate
deeply how social media can affect academic performance. Here, the social media use is
directly linked to the performance outputs of Grade 10 students selected for study from
Mamatid National High School. More specifically, these parameters explored encompass the
aspects through which social media is implicated to affect students in the realms of
academics, motivation, time management, and study skills. In order to determine both the
MAMATID NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
upsides and the downfalls of social media, the under study will be went into, with due
deliberation on this issue.
Statement of the problem
This study aims to know the impact of social media usage on the academic
performance of students.
1. What social media platform does student commonly used?
2. What is the main purpose why students using social media?
3. Is there’s an effect on students when their used to much the social media?
4. How does the social media usage affect the academic performance of students?
Significance of the Study
This study aims to determine in quantitative terms if social media act as a support
system for students and how they cope with negative emotions while nurturing positive
feelings. The study shall examine the psychological impact of social media on students by
scrutinizing measurable indicators such as self-esteem levels, frequency of social media use,
and emotional well-being. Numerical data can close the gap between social media benefits
and their impact on the mental health, self-esteem, and self-concept of students.
a. Students. Guides learners to understand how social networks usage impacts their
learning. Promotes using social media in a positive and beneficial manner for academic
purposes. Deals with how education intersects with the use of the internet.

b. Teachers. helps teachers comprehend why students use social media and the potential
academic problems that might result from such behavior. provides information for
developing initiatives that will use social media as a teaching tool and ensure academic
achievement. encourages educators to help students become excellent with technology
and time handling abilities
c. Parents. Stimulates parental regulation of and evaluation of child's social media
usage. Provides advice on how to establish a productive academic study schedule while being
exposed to online social networking. Builds an understanding of the website impact and
constraints on academic performance.
d. Future researchers. It can also be used as a case study reference when the
researchers are conducting related basic studies of social media and academic achievement.
Offers examples of future research topics that remain to be studied (e.g., impact on mental
health, social behavior, size of primary cumulative academic impact).
Objectives of the Study
To know the relationship of using social media on their academic performance and to
know the positive and negative effects of different social media platforms in the students
learning outcomes , including how long the usage, what type of content, and the influence of
platforms to the students and their overall academic performance. More specifically, this
study seeks to:
1. To determine the average number of hours students spend using social media.
MAMATID NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
2. To establish the degree to which social media uses interfere with study time.
3. To assess the relationship between social media usage and academic performance.
4. To find out whether social media diverts students or is favorable.
Hypotheses (H₀)
1. The most commonly used social media platforms among Grade 10 students of Mamatid
National High School are not Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and Messenger.
2. Grade 10 students in Mamatid National High School Community do not primarily use
social media for communication, information gathering, or entertainment.
3. There is no significant effect for excessive social media usage on the Grade 10 students.
4. There is no significant relationship between social media usage and the academic
performance of Grade 10 students.
Theoretical Framework
Sanzhar Naizabekov concluded that social media causes procrastination as a result of its
distracting nature. It would take an individual who uses social media much more time than it
would take a focused individual to finish a task. Through procrastination emerges the second
negative impact, which is lack of motivation, because using social media with studying
develops negative attitude towards their individual work at school (Naizabekov, 2012)
MAMATID NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Though most of these studies were correlational, and correlation is not the same as
causation, as the studies show that the number of participants experiencing these negative
emotions under the influence of social media is significantly high, more extensive research is
highly suggested to explore causal effects (Mathewson, 2020).
Conceptual Framework
The rise of new technological advances has led to social media becoming engrained in
students daily lives. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and
YouTube become medium of contact, amusement, and studies. Moreover, students are
often the primary users of social media for study and social relationships.
But, with that use case of knowledge-sharing and networking, is the potential risk that
comes from social media. Using it too much can lead to distractions, lessing concentration,
and lesser productivity. This study will analyze the effect of social media on student
productivity (dependent variable), while social media is considered the independent variable.
According to Uses and Gratifications Theory, people connect with media to meet
certain needs, this research will explore whether levels of social media interplay impact
students’ deterrent and scholarly productivity? Further, through the lens of Cognitive Load
Theory, the effects of social media task switching on cognitive performance will be
examined.

This examination of social media relationships will generate insights regarding student
academic behavior that enables educators together with students to establish balanced social
media usage strategies.

A basic graphic illustration helps understand your conceptual framework structure:
Independent Variable: Social Media Usage (frequency, duration, purpose)
The nature of content among participants along with their tendency to multitask
represent key influencing elements within this framework.
Dependent Variable: Student Productivity (focus, academic performance, task efficiency)

Scope and Limitation
The following are the scopes and limitation of the study:
The primary goal of our study is to investigate the Impact of Social Media on the
Performance Output of Selected Grade 10 Students at Mamatid National High School. This
study intends to learn how the use of social media influences students' ability to finish the
MAMATID NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
task or assignments given to them, manage their time, and stay focused on their school
works. The researchers delimited this study only for the grade 10 students enrolled at
Mamatid National High School for the academic year of 2024-2025 between February 2025
and April 2025. Information will be collected using survey questionnaires to measure
students' views regarding the effect of social media on their study obligations. to make the
findings reliable and applicable.
