Question 3: [25 marks]

A 600V : 300 V, 60 Hz, 12 kVA single-phase transformer gave the following test results:

Applied Voltage Current Measured Power Measured

Open-circuit test
(HV side open, 300 V 1A 180 W
voltage applied to the
LV side)
Short-circuit test
(LV side shorted, 40 V 20 A 480 W
voltage applied to the
HV side)

a) Determine the resistance and reactance values of the series branch (Req and Xeq), with all
values referred to the high voltage side. [10]

Question 4: [25 marks]

A 3-phase step-up transformer is rated 1000 MVA, 22 kV : 345 KV, 60 Hz, with an impedance of
j 0.5 Ω referred to the 22 kV side. It steps up the voltage of a generating station to power a 345
kV line.

(a) Calculate the magnitude of the line-to-line voltage across the generator terminals when
the HV side of the transformer delivers 800 MW at 345 kV (line-to-line) and at 0.9
lagging power factor. [15]
(b) Calculate the magnitude of the generator current. [10]

Question 5: [25 marks]

(a) A balanced Y-connected voltage source with Vab = 600 /0⁰ volts is applied to a balanced-∆

each phase. Calculate the magnitude of the line currents and the magnitude of the voltages at
the load terminals. [ 5 + 5 ]

(b) A 20 Ω resistor is connected between lines A and B of a 3-phase, 480 V line-to-line. Calculate
the currents that flow in lines A, B, and C respectively. [ 5 + 5 + 5 ]
