Work Method Statement
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF WORK: PRESSURE SAFETY VALVE (PSV) calibration involves the
necessary task performed and exercised for optimum valve reliability and efficiency.
SCOPE:
This instruction procedure includes calibration information for the inspected pressure safety
valves.
Only trained and qualified engineers/ technicians in valve, actuator, and accessory operation
and maintenance shall only be allowed to calibrate, maintain and operate valves. To avoid
personal injury or property damage, it is important to carefully read, understand, and follow
all the contents of this procedure, including all safety cautions and warnings.
Setting Up‐
*Follow local signing‐in procedures.
*Wear protective gloves and safety goggles as fluid remain in the valve even if the facility is
empty.
*Assess site hazards, in particular, potential slip/trip hazards. Make area safe before
continuing, carry out site‐specific risk assessment.
*Erect barriers where appropriate to prevent unauthorized access.
*Before any valve or component will be calibrated, maintained, MARSTIN shall identify and
ensure that the correct valve/ component have been selected. Site diagrams may be useful.
*MARSTIN will be sure to conduct a safety check on all hand and power tools to be used
before beginning work.
* PERFORM a visual examination of the valve considering the following attributes AND
RECORD any discrepancies that could affect operation of the valve in the Comments Section
of the Valve Test Data Sheet.
a. Erosion
b. Corrosion
c. Structural Integrity
d. Cracks
e. Bolting Integrity
f. Foreign Material (i.e., inlet/outlet nozzle restriction or blockage)
g. General Mechanical Condition
CONDUCT a flush of the test bench to remove any trapped foreign material or debris.
INSTALL the pressure safety valve on the test stand in a like manner as required in the plant
for operation (normally vertically mounted) using the appropriate size fittings.
INSPECT both the pressure safety valve and test bench for any unsafe conditions.
ENSURE the pressure tap for determining set‐pressure is located at the valve inlet.
VERIFY valve temperature, test medium and test bench surroundings are at a stable ambient
temperature between 40°F and 100 F.
RECORD test pressure gauge ID, Cal. Due Date, Range and Test Gauge Accuracy (in both %
full scale and psig).
VERIFY Test Gauge Accuracy (in psig) is less than or equal to the Required Accuracy.
Note: The pop/ initial pressure. If the valve open at the required set pressure, then, the
holding/ blown down pressure will determine to check for leakage of the seating to the disc,
if it leaks, work shall be done to correct it immediately.
However, if the initial pressure does not correspond to the set pressure, the valve will be
adjusted by opening the cap and turn the adjustable spindle either to the left or right,
Depending on what you want, to the corresponding set pressure at which the pressure will
be introduced two or three times to confirm the set pressure.
