1. 𝑥 + 𝑦 * = 7
2. a. False
b. True
c. True
d. False
3. Logarithmic functions are actually exponents. The base (𝑏) of the logarithmic
function is also the base of the equivalent exponential function.
• If 𝑏 = 1, exponential function will not be generated since 1 raised to any
number will always be equal to 1. In turn, 𝑦 = log& 𝑥 would only have the
domain {1} whose range is an infinite value of 𝑦, which does not
represent a function.

ANSWER KEY

• If 𝑏 = 0, exponential function will not be generated since 0 raised to any

positive number will always be equal to 0. In turn, 𝑦 = log R 𝑥 would only
have the domain {0} whose range is an infinite positive value of 𝑦, which
also does not represent a function.
• If 𝑏 < 0, values of 𝑏 T would only be oscillating between positive and
negative numbers for 𝑥 > 1 and would not be defined for some infinite
rational values of 𝑥 within the interval −1 < 𝑥 < 1.
4. Yes. By substitution, 3 = log ' 𝑥 shows a true statement since 3' = 27.
5. Answers may vary. Check student’s answer.
