2 a) A cantilever beam of circular cross section, d=30mm, l=0.5mm, Mb =1 KN.m, Mt =0.5 10


KN.m load. Determine the maximum and minimum normal stresses and maximum
shear stress at critical point.
b) Design a spindle of milling machine to transmit 15kW at 1000 rpm. The angular 06
twist to exceed 0.50 per metre length. The material for the spindle is 45C8 steel (σy =
360 MPa). The outside diameter of the spindle is twice that of inside diameter. Take
factor of safety = 2.

3 a) A Cantilever beam of span 800 mm has rectangular cross-section of depth 200 mm. 06
The free end of the beam is subjected to a transverse load off 1 kN that drops on to it
from a height of 40 mm. Selecting 40C8 steel (σy = 328.6 MPa) and factor of safety =
3, determine the width of rectangular cross-section.
b) A stepped shaft of circular cross section show in figure is subjected to variable load 10
which is completely reversed with a value equal to 100 kN. It is made of SAE 1045
steel annealed (σu = 586.4 MPa, σy = 309.9 MPa, σ-1 = 289.3 MPa). Determine the
diameter‘d’ and radius ‘r’ so that maximum stress will be limited to corresponding to
FOS of 2. Notch sensitivity index =1.

4 A Solid steel shaft running at 600 rpm is supported on bearings 600 mm apart. The 16
shaft receives 40 kW through a 400 mm diameter pulley weighing 400 N located 300
mm to the right of the left bearing by a vertical flat belt drive. The power is
transmitted from the shaft through another pulley of diameter 600 mm weighing
600 N located 200 mm to the right of right bearing. The Belt drives are at right
angles to each other and ratio of belt tensions is 3. Determine the size of shaft

necessary, if the allowable shear stress in the shaft material is 40 MPa and the loads
are steady.

5 a) Design a spigot and cotter joint to sustain load of 100kN. The Material selected for 08
the joint has the following design stresses, σt = 150 N/mm2, σc = 150 N/mm2 and τ =
60N/mm2.
b) Design a flang coupling to transmit 5KW power at 1200 rpm. The design stresses 08
may be taken as 80 N/mm2 in tension, 40 N/mm2 in shear and 80 N/mm2 in
compression.

6 a) A Flat belt drive is required to transmit 10 kW from a pulley of 600 mm effective 08
diameter running at 300 rpm. The angle of contact is spread over 7/16 of
circumference. Determine the width of belt whose thickness is 10 mm. The allowable
stress for the belt is 2.25 MPa. Coefficient of friction between pulley and belt is 0.3.
b) Select a V-belt drive to transmit 10 kW power from pulley of 200 mm pitch diameter 08
mounted on an electric motor running at 720 rpm to another pulley mounted on
compressor running at 200 rpm. The service is heavy duty varying from 10 hours to
14 hours per day and centre distance between the pulleys is 600 mm.

7 a) A triple riveted lap joint is to be made of between 15 mm plates. If the safe working 08
stresses in tension, crushing ad shear are 120 MPa, 160 MPa and 90 MPa
respectively. Design the riveted joint, if the pitch in the outermost row is twice the
pitch of the rivets in the inner rows.
b) Determine the size of the weld for a welded joint loaded, if the permissible shear 08
stress for the weld material is 75 MPa.

8 a) Derive the conditions of self-locking in power screws. 06
b) A triple treaded power screw is used in a screw jack, has nominal diameter of 50 mm 10
and a pitch of 8 mm. The threads are square shape and the length of nut is 48 mm.
The screw jack is used to lift the load of 7.5 kN. The co-efficient of friction at the
threads is 0.12 and the collar friction is negligible. Calculate (i) Principle shear stress
in the screw rod (ii) Transverse shear stress in the screw and nuts (iii) Unit bearing
pressure for threads (iv) State whether the screw is self-locking.
