c) A car moves in a straight line such that for a short time its velocity is defined by v =
(3t2+2t)m/s, where t is in seconds. Determine its position and acceleration when t=3s
(8marks)
d) (i) State Kepler’s laws of planetary motion
(ii) State the principle of Conservation of Momentum
(iii) Differentiate between Kinematics and kinetics (6 marks)

e) Determine the speed of block A in Fig Q1 (e) if block B has an upward speed of 6m/s
(4marks)

f) A sack slides off the ramp 6m above the ground with horizontal velocity of 12m/s. Determine
the time needed for the jack to strike the floor and the range R where the sacks begin to file up
(5marks)
Question2 (20 marks)
(a) The flywheel of a steam engine has a radiusof gyration of 1 m and mass 2500 kg. The
starting torque of thesteam engine is 1500 N-m and may be assumed constant.
Determine :
(i). Angular acceleration of the flywheel
(ii). Kineticenergy of the flywheel after 10 seconds from the start (5 marks)
(b) A winding drum raises a cage of mass 500 kg through a height of 100 meters. The mass of the
winding drum is 250 kg and has an effective radius of 0.5 m and radius of gyrationis 0.35 m. The
mass of the rope is 3 kg/m.The cage has, at first, an acceleration of 1.5 m/s2until a velocity of 10
m/s is reached, afterwhich the velocity is constant until the cage nears the top and the final
retardation is 6 m/s2. Find:
(i)The time taken for the cage to reach the top,
(ii)The torque which must be applied to the drum at starting
(iii)The power at the end of acceleration period. (15 marks)
Question3 (20 marks)
(a) Plane A in Fig. Q4 (a) is flying along a straight-line path, whereasplane B is flying along
a circular path having a radius of curvatureof pB = 400 km. Determine the velocity and
acceleration of B asmeasured by the pilot of A. (10 marks)

(b) A haulage rope winds on a drum of radius 500 mm, the free end being
attached to a truck. The truck has a mass of 500 kg and is initially at rest. The drum is equivalent
toa mass of 1250 kg with radius of gyration 450 mm. The rim speed of the drum is 0.75 m/s
beforetherope tightens. By considering the change in linear momentum of the truck and the
angular momentum of the drum, find:
(i) The speed of the truck when the motion becomes steady.
(ii) Energy lost to the system. (10 marks)
Question4 (20 marks)
(a) A steam engine drop-valve is closed by a spring after the operation of a trip
gear. The stiffness of the spring is such that a force of 4 N is required per mm of
compression. Thevalve is lifted against the spring, and when fully open the compression is
75 mm. When closedthecompression is 30 mm. The mass of the valve is 5 kg and the
resistance may be taken as constantand equal to 70 N. Find the time taken to close the valve
after the operation of the trip. (10 marks)

(b) A sphere of mass 50kg moving at 3m/s overtakes and collides with another
sphere of mass 25kg moving at 1.5m/s in the same direction. Find the velocities of the two
massesafter impact and loss of kinetic energy during impact in the following cases:
(i). When the impact is inelastic,
(ii). When the impactis elastic, and
(iii). When coefficient ofrestitution is 0.6. (10 marks)
