bamboo as a building material

Bamboo is a versatile and renewable building material known for its strength, lightweight, and earthquake resistance, making it suitable for various construction applications such as scaffolding, flooring, and roofing. Preservation methods for bamboo include both traditional non-chemical techniques and chemical treatments to prevent decay and insect infestation. Despite its advantages, bamboo faces limitations such as low structural efficiency in jointing techniques, flammability, and a lack of comprehensive design guidelines.

BAMBOO

AS
BUILDING
MATERIAL

Introduction

• Bamboo has been in wide usage since ancient

times as a low-cost material for houses,
scffolding, bridges etc.
• One of the fastest growing plants on Earth. It
grows upto 91cm in a single day
• It has high compressive strength and low
weight.
• renewable and extremely versatile resource
with multi-purpose usage.
• It also acts a very good earthquack resistance
material.
Use of bamboo in
construction

• Scaffolding
• Reinforcement
• Roofing
• Walling
• Flooring
• Foundation
• Doors & windows
• Bamboo poles lashes together
have been used as scaffloding in
Scaffolding high rise structure due to their
strength and resilience.
Reinforcement

Bamboo are used as the

reinforcement in beams and
columns in the building
construction.
Roofs

• Bamboo tiles roofing

• Tatch roofing
• Bamboo truses
• Bamboo can be used as flooring material due to its
Bamboo flooring better wear and tear resisitance and its resilience
properties
• Bajareque wall
Bamboo walls • Bamboo board wall
• Woven bamboo wall
Preservation of bamboo
• Non chemical method (Traditional method)
• Chemical method
Non - chemical
method

Bamboo culms are placed above fireplace inside the house so

Smoking that the smoke and heat rises up and both dry and blacken
the culms.

White Bamboo culms and bamboo mats for housing construction are
Washing often painted with slacked lime.

Curing involves harvested culms, with branches and leaves

Curing intact, in open air.

The culms are submerged ineithher stagnnant or running

Soaking water, or mud for several weeks.
Chemical method

Borax – Boric Acid

Preservation Treatment Copper-Based Preservatives Creosote

Solution of boric acid and borax is used Copper compounds are applied to ba a traditional wood preservative effective
to soak bamboo, providing protecction mboo to prevent fungal growth and ins against decay and insects, but unsuitable
against insects and decay while being ect infestation. for indoor use due to its strong odor and
environmentally friendly potential health risks.

Limitations and Drawbacks

Jointing techniques - Although many traditional joint types exist, their

structural efficiency is low.

Flammability - Bamboo structure are not fully fire-resistance and the

cost of treatment, where available, is relatively high.

Lack of design guidance and condification - The engineering design

of bamboo structure has not yet been fully addressed. There is little
or no data containing specifications of bamboo.
Conclusion
• Since bamboo is an environment friendly material, it should be given more importance.
Bamboo is very light in weight with compare to steel so dead load of the member can be
decreased with use of it.
• Bamboo is easily available material, so it is economic material and by using it, we can reduce
the cost of construction. Since bamboo is very effective in seismic resistance, use of it is
safe.
