UNIT (S): Trigonometry
TOPIC(S): Pythagoras Theorem
DURATION: 2 weeks
Date: January 13, 2025
TEACHER: Mr. K. Edwards
STANDARDS:
- (Geometry) Explore paths, geometric shapes and space and make generalization
about geometric relationships within the environment.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson students should be able to:

 Appreciate the role of symbols and basic trigonometric techniques in solving problems in
mathematics and related fields;
 Demonstrate the ability to reason with abstract entities.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: Students should be able to:

1. Prove Pythagoras’ Theorem by a suitable method (for example by the area method).
2. Use Pythagoras Theorem to solve right – angled triangle problems.
3. Use trigonometric ratios to find unknown quantities in right-angled triangles only.
4. Use trigonometric ratios to solve problems related to angles of elevation and
depression.
5. Calculate unknown angles in given diagrams and word problems.

KEY SKILLS: Observe, investigate, share, compare, calculate, navigate, estimate, record
information and listen to others
KEY VOCABULARY:
Pythagoras’ Theorem, Opposite, Adjacent, Hypotenuse,
Line of sight, Elevation, Depression, Alternate,
Clinometer, Sine, Cosine, Tangent

LESSON PLAN
2025
PRIOR LEARNING:
Check that students can:
 Multiply
 Substitute
 Divide

LEARNING OUTCOME:
Students will be able to:
 Prove Pythagoras’ Theorem by a suitable method (for example by the area method).
 Use Pythagoras Theorem to solve right – angled triangle problems.
 Use trigonometric ratios to find unknown quantities in right-angled triangles only.
 Use trigonometric ratios to solve problems related to angles of elevation and
depression.
 Calculate unknown angles in given diagrams and word problems.
TEACHING/LEARNING ACTIVITY:
Students will:
- Carry out various activities that will be given by the teacher
ASSESSMENT: Students will be given worksheets
EXTENDED LEARNING:

Challenge students to:

- Identify the different application of transformation
LINKS TO OTHER SUBJECTS:
 Engineering & Science: In mathematics, engineering and science, formulae are used to
relate physical quantities to each other. They provide rules so that if we know the values of
certain quantities, we can calculate the values of others.
 Business Studies: Exponential growth and decay

LESSON PLAN
2025
Day 1: ENGAGE – Introduction to Right-Angled Triangles
Objective: Identify right-angled triangles and recognize their properties.
Activities:
1. Warm-Up (Think-Pair-Share):
o Show images of different triangles.
o Ask students to identify right-angled triangles and discuss their properties.
2. Real-Life Connection:
o Show images of ladders against walls, buildings, and mountains.
o Ask: How can we calculate the height of an object if we know the length of a
shadow or ladder?
3. Interactive Discussion:
o Introduce the concept of a hypotenuse (longest side opposite the right angle).
Evaluation:
 Exit Ticket: What makes a triangle a right-angled triangle?

Day 2: EXPLORE – Discovering Pythagoras' Theorem

Objective: Experimentally verify the theorem.
Activities:
1. Hands-On Activity:
o Provide students with grid paper and cutouts of squares.
o Guide them to form a right-angled triangle and place squares on all three sides.
o Have them count and compare areas.
2. Group Exploration:
o Let students use geoboards or dynamic geometry software (e.g., GeoGebra) to
explore different right-angled triangles.
3. Guided Discovery:
o Ask: What do you notice about the sum of the squares of the two shorter sides
compared to the longest side?
Evaluation:
 Students write a one-sentence observation about their findings.

Day 3: EXPLAIN – Understanding Pythagoras' Theorem
Objective: Formally state and prove Pythagoras' Theorem.
Activities:
1. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Guided Proof):
o Present the formula: a2+b2=c2a^2 + b^2 = c^2a2+b2=c2
o Use a visual proof (e.g., arranging four identical right triangles inside a square).
2. Worked Examples:
o Solve simple problems finding missing sides.
o Emphasize squaring and square roots.
3. Guided Practice:
o Students practice with teacher support.
Evaluation:
 Exit Ticket: Solve a basic Pythagorean equation.

Day 4: ELABORATE – Applying Pythagoras' Theorem in Real Life

Objective: Solve real-world problems using the theorem.
Activities:
1. Group Work:
o Give real-life problem scenarios, e.g.:
 Finding the length of a ladder needed to reach a certain height.
 Distance between two points in a city using a coordinate grid.
2. Technology Integration:
o Use online simulations or apps (GeoGebra, Desmos) to model situations.
3. Challenge Questions:
o Word problems requiring multi-step calculations.
Evaluation:
 Think-Pair-Share: How can Pythagoras' Theorem be useful in careers (e.g.,
construction, navigation, engineering)?

o Mix of MCQs, short-answer, and application-based questions.
2. Creative Task:
o Students create their own real-world word problem and exchange with
classmates to solve.
3. Extension Activity (Optional):
o Introduce Pythagorean Triples.
o Discuss whether Pythagoras' Theorem applies to non-right-angled triangles.
Final Evaluation:
 Reflection Journal: Describe one way you can use Pythagoras' Theorem in real life.

Materials Needed:
 Grid paper
 Scissors & square cutouts
 Geoboards / digital tools (GeoGebra, Desmos)
 Real-world images for problem-solving
