TOPIC(S): Pythagoras Theorem
DURATION: 2 weeks
Date: January 13, 2025
TEACHER: Mr. K. Edwards
STANDARDS:
- (Geometry) Explore paths, geometric shapes and space and make generalization
about geometric relationships within the environment.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson students should be able to:
Appreciate the role of symbols and basic trigonometric techniques in solving problems in
mathematics and related fields;
Demonstrate the ability to reason with abstract entities.
1. Prove Pythagoras’ Theorem by a suitable method (for example by the area method).
2. Use Pythagoras Theorem to solve right – angled triangle problems.
3. Use trigonometric ratios to find unknown quantities in right-angled triangles only.
4. Use trigonometric ratios to solve problems related to angles of elevation and
depression.
5. Calculate unknown angles in given diagrams and word problems.
KEY SKILLS: Observe, investigate, share, compare, calculate, navigate, estimate, record
information and listen to others
KEY VOCABULARY:
Pythagoras’ Theorem, Opposite, Adjacent, Hypotenuse,
Line of sight, Elevation, Depression, Alternate,
Clinometer, Sine, Cosine, Tangent
