Mobile learning is an learning activity which uses tools in some devices such as feature
phones, tablets, or smartphones. Nowadays, the popularity of feature phone (an old phone which has
no many tools or apps on it) challenged by the arrival of tablets. The most well known is probably the
iPad, but there are many, many more. While tablets continue to become more widely available, mobile
phones are already everywhere. Mobile phones are now both the most common device used to access
the internet worldwide and increasingly, smartphones they have touchscreen control. Consequently a
lot of what you can do with a tablet, you can also do with a smartphone.
These smartphones, along with tablets, allow learners and teachers to access a wide number
of collaborative tools, websites, ebooks and they can be of great help to the learning process. This is
very important to teachers to consider of using mobile phone on their learning activities. Conducting
to many advantages that may be granted, teachers should incorporate mobile learning into classes. In
addition, teachers must pay attention before planning and addapting mobile learning into their classes,
they should know how many learners have smartphones or even feature phones, regardless whether
the learners can access internet or not. Teachers should think about having rules in the class when
using smartphones by considering the powerful benefit and lackness that may be appeared.
These are some tips while using mobile learning into classes. These tips can be applied for
smartphone particularly, but also can be implemented for another devices such as tablets, PCs, or
laptops. See the tips below:
1. Use simple features of the device such as calendar to note down homework for learners. This is
very simple, but if teachers establish a routine of putting homework and tests into the learners’
calendars on their phone, it can be a useful way for both stdents and teachers to feel comfortable
using phones in class.
2. Use camera. Let learners use their mobile phones or tablets to take photos of work in class e.g. a
handout or vocabulary on the board, so they can refer it for a revision or as a continuation of a
project. Moreover, get learners to use photos on their phones to personalize learning activities.
For example, if teachers are describing people or places or telling stories, the chances are learners
will have some photos on their phone which they could use.In addition, camera can set homework
which involves taking photos. For instance, a good activity “Sunday story”, where learners take
photos throughout Sunday, then work in groups/pairs to describe what they did on Sunday by
referring to the photos on their phone
3. Use voice recorder. Learners can use it to record themselves speaking their “best English” this
could be something more formal, perhaps a story they have written. They could potentially share
it with you or someone else in the class (if they are comfortable with that) but it is just as useful
for them to listen to themselves speaking or perhaps get them to do this at home. Besides, learners
can use video recording to play learning games. For example, parrot game: get learners to record
themselves trying to mimic famous people speaking English. This is really just for fun, but can
raise awareness of certain features of spoken English and is aimed to make them relax and
experiment.
4. Use some applications or tools. Recommend apps and get the learners to recommend them too.
It can help them much in supporting their learning activities. Oxford University Press provides
apps include dictionaries, readers, pronunciation and vocabulary apps. Learners may look for or
store them on their phone for big usefull.
