EXPLANATORY NOTES
1. Answer: HEPA 13 and 14 are considered medical grades that can filter 0.1micron
particles in the air. HEPA 10 to 12 are the general standard grade that filter
0.3micron particles. HEPA filters are effective in prevention of spread of
airborne contaminants such as bacteria and viruses.
3. Answer: R-32, R-410a and R-22 are the most commonly used refrigerants today.
However, R-22 (also known as Freon) are slowly being phased out. Among these
common refrigerants, R-32 is the most eco-friendly due to its less effect on
the ozone and less global warming potential. So you can notice that many AC
manufacturers are now using R-32 refrigerants in their products.
4. Answer: This is a standard and simplest way to check leakage in an AC tubing
connection. Spray soapy water to the connection and check for growing bubbles.
5. Answer: The area of the room is 20sqm. You can easily answer this if you have
previous experience. However, if you don’t, you can search online for an
initial guide. One good guide is from DOE:

You can find this table here: www.tinyurl.com/doeaccomputation

11. Answer: EER or Energy Efficiency Ratio is the measure of how efficient the
appliance uses the energy it consumes. The higher the rating, the lower energy
consumption. In HVAC, there are other categories of EER such as SEER or CEER.
12. Answer: There are numerous solar panel brands available in the Philippines.
Trina, Hanhwa, JA Solar, REC, LG, SunPower and Seraphim are among the popular
ones. Some are made from China and Europe. EcoShift is a brand of lighting
products.
13. Answer: There are three types of solar power system in the Philippines - grid-
tied, off-grid and hybrid system. You can research more on the differences of
the three but in general, grid-tied systems do not require solar batteries.
The most common type used is grid-tied system, followed by hybrid system. The
system type largely depends on the type of inverter used.
23. Answer: A keyway is the grooved channel along the edge of set concrete to
provide a keyed joint between the set concrete and the fresh concrete. It is a
type of construction joint. Sometimes, dowels are incorporated.
34. Answer: WPC or Wood Plastic Composite
37. Answer: You can refer to Table 6 of Green Building Code of the Philippines.
38. Answer: Refer to the GBCP since it is the only code that provides this
information.
40. Answer: The best answer for this is fiberglass. Take note that polyolefin and
polyethylene are almost the same. Rubber is the most common insulation used
for HVAC copper pipes.

45. Answer: Thermocouples are used to monitor the temperature of concrete. It is
most commonly used in mass concrete construction such as dams.
47. Answer: A high-carbon steel is also known as hard steel. It is a type of
carbon steel and is less malleable than mild steel.
56. FDAS involves several important components. The basic components include
initiating devices (heat detectors, CO2 detectors, smoke detectors),
notification devices (horns and strobes), the FACP (fire alarm control panel
or control unit) and the backup power supply. Larger FDAS is also connected to
the Fire Extinguishing System (i.e. sprinkler systems).
57. FDAS has two basic types - conventional and addressable systems. Some sources
also describe the semi-addressable system. The main difference between
conventional and addressable is the configuration or the connection of the
devices with the main control panel. The conventional system is used for
smaller buildings.
59. The discussion of the different type of fire suppression systems can be found
here: https://tinyurl.com/firesup01
60. Take note that the thread size is different from the opening of the sprinkler
heads. The two most common sizes are ½” and ¾”.
68. Answer: Fire-rated glass can be wired glass, ceramic glass, tempered glass or
intumescent glass
73. Answer: A collar tie is a tension tie in the upper third of opposing gable
rafters that is intended to resist rafter separation from the ridge beam
during periods of unbalanced loads, such as that caused by wind uplift, or
unbalanced roof loads from snow.
74. Answer: There is no special loading provided in the question so we will assume
that the beam is uniformly loaded. The maximum bending moment in a cantilever
beam or slab occurs at its fixed end. The maximum deflection, on the other
hand, is at the free end.
81. Answer: Among these, AAC is known to have a smooth surface that usually does
not need plastering
85. Answer: “Kapak” is tile debonding in English so the tile adhesive is the best
answer.
86. Answer: For lean concrete mixes, the ratio is generally 1:3:6, 1:4:8, and
1:5:10.
93. Note that strap footing is also considered a combined footing. However, strap
footing is more specific so it is the best answer.

128. Green wood is wood that has been recently cut and therefore has not had an
opportunity to season (dry) by evaporation of the internal moisture.
129. Shou sugi ban is an ancient Japanese technique for waterproofing and
preserving wood that is finding increased use. It involves charring the wood
surface with a torch until it turns black. While the practice originated for
the purpose of weatherproofing wood, it has recently become popular as a
rustic, textural design element for siding or interior applications.
131. Rapidly renewable materials (those with a harvest cycle of ten years or less)
generally require fewer inputs and have a lower environmental impact. Some
examples of rapidly renewable materials are bamboo for flooring, cotton batt
insulation, wool carpeting, cork flooring, straw bales, and linoleum flooring.
137. Geocells are engineered for protection and stabilization applications. They
are often used to help improve the performance of standard construction
materials and erosion-control treatments.
