Class10 Math Reflection

Reflection is a geometric transformation where a figure is flipped over a line, resulting in a mirror image. Key properties include unchanged size and shape, altered orientation, and preserved distance from the line of reflection. The document outlines reflection rules across different axes and provides solved examples for clarity.

Class 10 Mathematics - Reflection

### Introduction to Reflection

Reflection is a type of transformation in which a figure is flipped over a specific line,

called the **line of reflection**. The image is a mirror image of the original shape.

### Properties of Reflection:

1. The size and shape of the figure remain unchanged.

2. The orientation (direction) of the shape changes.
3. The distance from the line of reflection is preserved.

### Reflection Across Different Axes:

1. **Reflection over the x-axis:**

- If a point is (x, y), after reflection it becomes (x, -y).

2. **Reflection over the y-axis:**

- If a point is (x, y), after reflection it becomes (-x, y).

3. **Reflection over the line y = x:**

- If a point is (x, y), after reflection it becomes (y, x).

4. **Reflection over the line y = -x:**

- If a point is (x, y), after reflection it becomes (-y, -x).

### Solved Examples:

Example 1: Reflection over the x-axis

Find the reflection of point A(3, 4) over the x-axis.
Solution:
Using the rule (x, y) -> (x, -y),
New coordinates of A' = (3, -4).

Example 2: Reflection over the y-axis

Find the reflection of point B(-5, 2) over the y-axis.

Solution:
Using the rule (x, y) -> (-x, y),
New coordinates of B' = (5, 2).

Example 3: Reflection over the line y = x

Find the reflection of point C(2, -3) over the line y = x.

Solution:
Using the rule (x, y) -> (y, x),
New coordinates of C' = (-3, 2).

Example 4: Reflection over the line y = -x

Find the reflection of point D(-4, 6) over the line y = -x.

Solution:
Using the rule (x, y) -> (-y, -x),
New coordinates of D' = (-6, 4).

### Conclusion:

Reflection is an important concept in geometry and is widely used in coordinate geometry problems.
By following the transformation rules, one can easily determine the reflected points.
