The Problem

Introduction

In today's interconnected world, the impact of sleep deprivation on academic performance

is a concern at multiple levels: international, national, and local. As the global community

becomes increasingly aware of the importance of mental and physical well-being, understanding

the consequences of inadequate sleep has become imperative. Sleep deprivation among senior

high school students is a pressing issue that manifests at multiple levels: international, national,

and local. The effects of insufficient sleep on the daily school routines of these students are far-

reaching, impacting their cognitive abilities, emotional health, and overall academic

performance. Sleep deprivation among senior high school students is a pressing issue that

manifests at multiple levels: international, national, and local. The effects of insufficient sleep on

the daily school routines of these students are far-reaching, impacting their cognitive abilities,

emotional health, and overall academic performance.

Studies have shown that sleep deprivation is prevalent among students due to their

demanding academic schedules, extracurricular activities, and other commitments. Insufficient

sleep is associated with a range of negative health and social outcomes, including adverse

performance at school ("The Global Problem of Insufficient Sleep and Its Serious Public

Health," 2018).
Similar trends have been observed. A significant number of students report inadequate

sleep, which impacts their cognitive function, emotional well-being, and academic performance.

Sleep deprivation increases the likelihood of students suffering from an inability to concentrate,

poor grades, anxiety, depression, and even thoughts of suicide ("Among teens, sleep deprivation

an epidemic," 2015).

Sleep deprivation affects the students of Mindanao State University Wao Community

High School specially in their health, behavior issues. They also have a trouble in learning and

processing information, coping with stress, and staying focused at school. Stress, anxiety,

depression, poor memory and decreased concentration, low grades, and poorer academic

performance are some of the effect of sleep deprivation in the students of Mindanao State

University Wao Community High School.

This study aims to find out how sleep deprivation effect the daily routine of the Senior

High students of Mindanao State University Wao Community High School. Consequent

problems in the areas of physical health, mental health, and academic performance because of

sleep deprivation.

Review of Related Literature

This chapter contains a review of related Articles and studies that the researcher has

conducted in order to better understanding on topic.

Theoretical Framework

This study is supported by the theory of Patrick and Lee (2017), Effects of sleep

deprivation on cognitive and physical performance in university students. University students

who live in a society that discourages sleep are more likely to suffer from sleep deprivation as a

result of the demands of their social and academic obligations. Sleep deprivation is common

among st university students who live in a culture that promotes reduced sleep, due to the burden

of academic work and social pursuits. The reasons for poor sleep hygiene include alcohol and

caffeine intake, stimulants, and technology, which prevent students achieving sufficient sleep

time and quality. In relevance to researchers' study of how sleep deprivation can affect their

emotional, physical, and psychological aspects of students, getting enough quality sleep is

crucial for overall well-being and functioning. This study aims to reveal the different ways in

which sleep deprivation can affect students to emotional, psychological and physical aspects.

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) in 2015, sleep

deprivation can have a significant impact on school daily routines and academic performance.
They state that insufficient sleep in students is associated with difficulties in attention,

concentration, memory, and learning abilities, leading to decreased academic achievement.

Review of Related Articles

Along similar lines, it is thought to be “one’s perception that they fall asleep easily, get

sufficient duration so as to wake up feeling rested, and can make it through their day without

experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness”. (Štefan et al., 2018).

According to Richter, R. (2015), most recent survey of teen sleep, more than 87 percent

of high school students in the United States get far less than the recommended eight to 10 hours,

and the amount of time they sleep is decreasing a serious threat to their health, safety and

academic success

Sleep deprivation increases the likelihood teens will suffer myriad negative

consequences, including an inability to concentrate, poor grades, drowsy-driving incidents,

anxiety, depression, thoughts of suicide and even suicide attempts. It’s a problem that knows no

economic boundaries. (Ruthann Richter, 2015).

In order for human beings to function properly, sufficient sleep each night is vital, and

students need on average eight hours of sleep Sleep deprivation occurs when an adequate amount

of sleep is not being maintained. (Okano et al., 2019).

According to Schlarb et al. (2017), countless sleepless nights have been experienced due

to work schedules, required coursework, and clinical rotations. It has been found that “up to 60%

of all college students suffer from a poor sleep quality”.

Sleep is very essential in our lives; It allows us to regain more energy and process our

minds better. According to Gulia & Kumar (2020), Good sleep is important for the health and

wellbeing of people of all ages; however, given the current difficult circumstances, sleep, which

accounts for nearly one-third of our lives, should be prioritized in order to achieve better

immunity. It has a lot of great benefits for our bodies. Not only does it put everyone in a positive

mood, but this also prevents us from gaining weight. Furthermore, it has a great impact on our

emotions and intelligence. Sleeping is just as important as eating, drinking, and bathing. It's like

a basic necessity in our lives. We must do it efticiently day after day.

According to (Shrof f 2020), Teens 12 to 18 years old should sleep 8 to 9 hours per day.

But unfortunately, many of them seem to have a hard time meeting this standard. The author also

states that it turns out that many teenagers actually may need more sleep than in previous years.

However, for many teenagers, social pressures conspire against getting the proper amount and

quality of sleep.

According to Johnson (2020), summarizes that the ideal time to sleep and wake up will

differ depending on the individual. In specific, people should try to sleep a few hours after dark

and start waking up within the first few hours of daylight. (Cherney 2019) states that the better

the quality of sleep you get, the less likely you are to experience signif i cant daytime sleepiness.

According to (Carskadon et al., 2006 as cited by Dimitriou et al., 2015) habitual

weeknight sleep loss gets worse as individuals advance through their teenage years. As students

get closer to being adults, the greater the task will be. And since they're overloaded with

schoolwork, finding time to fall asleep becomes more and more dif f i cult. Sleep deprivation or

a lack of sleep makes a person susceptible to illness and other implications. Aside from that,
students who didn't get enough sleep will feel tired, drowsy, and sleep during class hours. It may

also cause students to have difficulties with comprehension and retention during their classes.

According to (Lee et al., 2015), The learning capacity and academic performance of

adolescents may be at tected by sleep quality or quantity because sleep plays important

role in attention and memory. As lack of sleep at tects our lives, learning becomes challenging,

and we become forgetful. Furthermore, thousands of students around the globe are at risk of

sleep deprivation which contributes to lower academic outcomes and problems at the workplace

(Merenheimo 2018).

Review of Related Studies

Effects of sleep deprivation on cognitive and physical performance in university

students. University students who live in a society that discourages sleep are more likely to suffer

from sleep deprivation as a result of the demands of their social and academic obligations. The

stimulants, alcohol and caffeine consumption, and technology all contribute to poor sleep

hygiene by preventing students from getting enough sleep of appropriate length and quality.

According to a cross-sectional poll, 71% of students did not get the full 8 hours of sleep that is

advised, and 60% of them were classed as bad sleepers. Research indicates that architecture

students sleep an average of 5.7 hours each night, and that academic work that keeps students up

at night—a phenomenon known as an "all-nighter" according to the Oxford English Dictionary

—occurs on 2.7 days per month on average (Patrick et al. 2017).

Moreover, sleep problems are very frequent in the general population and medical

students are one group that is vulnerable to poor sleep. More medical students than non-medical

students experience sleep difficulties. Research indicates that long-term learning, neurocognitive
and psychomotor function, and physical and mental health all benefit from getting enough sleep.

A lack of sleep might also increase a medical student's susceptibility to worry and depression.

Additionally, when medical personnel lack sleep, there are worries about patient safety (Perota et

al. 2021).

Going to sleep late at night and getting up early in the morning is the nightmare of every

students. Almost all teenagers, as they reach puberty, become walking zombies because they are

getting far too little sleep, Maas (2007) in Carpenter (2019). As stated by Consumer Affairs

(2019), at least once a week, more than one-quarter (28 percent) of high school students fall

asleep in school, 22 percent fall asleep doing homework, and 14 percent arrive late or miss

school because they oversleep.

According to the National Sleep Foundation (2015), an individual needs at least 7 to 10

hours of sleep to store energy and be able to function properly. It helps people work at an ideal

level and is used for critical processing of the brain. However, not everyone is getting sufficient

sleep to function duty, especially students. Many studies in the past have shown that sleep

deprivation does correlate with poor academic performance because of lower abilities in

cognition as a result of poor sleep quality.

Sleep loss interferes with a student’s academic, extracurricular and vocational choices.

Being unable to have a dequate amount of sleep results to negative outcome while having

enough sleep will not only result to an individual who’s more functional but also healthy.

(Gilbert and Weaver, 2016).

According to Leonidas (2019), only 30 percent of students sleep eight hours a night, the

average recommended amount of sleep for young adults. Twenty percent of students pull an all-

nighter at least once a month. In the Philippines, Arceo-Dumlao (2015) have said that almost half

of the Filipinos sleep less than six hours a day. Poor quality sleep has significant impacts on

daytime behavior and academic performance.

In order for human beings to function properly, sufficient sleep each night is vital, and

students need on average eight hours of sleep deprivation occurs when an adequate amount of

sleep is not being maintained. (Okano et al., 2019).

Researched to determine whether sleep disturbances at academic performance. To

compare sleep quality and quantity, a particular sample of excellent or underperformed

students was selected. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the

two groups. Several other studies have reached similar conclusions. (Jalali et al., 2020).

According to (Beebe et al., 2016), 87 young adults (14-17 years old) took part in a three-

week crossover study which included a week of normal sleep, an ideal sleep duration week, and
a fairly short sleep week. It was timed and took place in the online schoolroom. Participants

were requested to view lessons and take quizzes while being watched for symbols of sleepiness

and inattention. Teens displayed more behavior by absorption deficits and drowsiness after a

week of inadequate sleep (as cited by Sharman & Illingworth, 2020, p. 25).

On the other hand, some teens can't sleep because they are overthinking events in their

lives, personal problems, negative thoughts, or other factors. Some people recognize negative

emotions and move forward, Dr. Jobson believes that these feelings can be interpreted differently

when one is particularly worried about something or by people suffering from psychiatric

conditions such as insomnia, anxiousness, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder (ABC

Everyday 2020). According to Geisinger (2018), researchers found that people who experienced

frequent sleep disruptions tended to focus more on negative emotions. People took longer to

recover from negative emotions when they slept less. While some people are more prone to

fixation than others, poor sleep exacerbated fixation.

According to Phan (n.d.), there are numerous explanations for student sleep deprivation,

including a variety of social, cultural, environmental, and psychological factors (e.g., self-

interests and difficulties; participation in "extracurricular" activities such as digital technology;

school perfomance; and standard of living that disrupts sleep). People oftentimes sufter from

sleep deprivation as a consequence of their very own volition; rather than sleeping on time, they

prefer reading books, watch tv, or simply interact (Dutta, 2019).

Sleep is a necessary biotic activity that gives people the energy they need to perform

even the most basic tasks, such as walking, paying attention, and interacting. Teenagers who are

sleep-deprived struggle to understand information, concentrate, and respond quickly (Persky

2018). (Short et al., 2018) suggests that this type of insufficient sleep appears to have an impact

on adolescents' sustained attention performance in ways that are important to several normative

developmental domains, including their ability to pay attention and learn in the classroom.

Another reason is that students are coping to complete academic requirements or school

activities. According to Wang and Bró (2021), increased academic and social pressures, as well

as erratic schedules, make students prone to sleep interruptions and deprivation. Parents are

divided between sending their children to bed and enabling them to complete their homework no

matter how long it would take. And recognizing that a colleague may stay up later, or all night

contributes to the anxiety, competitive nature, and desire to remain awake for students who are

worried about their schoolwork (Pietro, 2020).

Chapter 3

Research Methodology

The study investigated the impact of challenges of the sleep deprivation effects on school

daily routines of the senior high school student’s experience and physical difficulties and stress.

The main objective of this study was to discover the negative impacts of sleep deprivation on

Senior High-School students.S pecifically it aims to discover the negative impacts of sleep

deprivation on Senior High-School students' academic performance in class.

This chapter was divided into several subtitles; the preamble, research design, respondent

of the study, local of the study, sampling technique, instrument of the study, procedures of data

gathering, treatment of data, and data analysis.

Research Design

This study employs the research design to determine the such sleep deprivation effects on

school daily routines of the senior high school student as the time management, daily

routines, stress level, Academic performance, and Physicality.

Respondents of the Study

The respondent in a study refers to the individuals who participate in the research and

provide data or information for analysis. The participants that the research ones selected in this

are study is the senior high department in the strand of the Science, Technology, Engineering and

Mathematics (STEM) student of the Mindanao State University Wao Community High School

that has the total of one hundred eighty-nine(189) students. Ninety-four (94) students from the

grade 11 and Ninety-two(92) from the grade 12 students as the respondents because we the

researchers are interested on the impact of Sleep Deprivation Effects On School Daily Routines

Of The Senior High School Students.

Locale of the Study

The locale of the study refers to the specific geographical location in which the

researches conducted. This was conducted at the Mindanao State University Wao Community

High School, located at the Barangay Eastern, Wao, Lanao del sur. Mindanao State University

was established on September 1,1961 through RA 1387. It is the only university directly to

charge by the government to advance the cause of national unity and actively pursue integration

through education. Mindanao State University Wao Community High School is one of the 13

external units under the supervision of the Mindanao State University Main Campus at Marawi

City.
Figure 2. The Locale of the Study

Sampling Technique & procedure

In choosing the respondents in this study, the researcher used random sampling, it is a

type of probability sampling in which the researcher randomly selects a subset of participants

from a population. Each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected. Data is

collected from as large a percentage as possible of this random. In this sampling method,

researchers want a sample the senior high school (STEM) students to be selected from Mindanao

State University Wao Community High School with a overall population of one hundred eighty-

six (186) students, which is ninety-four (94) students from grade 11 and ninety-two (92) from the

grade 12 students. Because it uses randomization, any research performed on this sample should

have high internal and external validity, and be at a lower risk for research biases like sampling

bias and selection bias. The researchers used descriptive research and select 10% out of 186

students in Senior high school students of Mindanao State University Wao Community High

School. Moreover, Sloven's formula was used to determine the sample size from the given

population.

Formula: n = (N)(n)

Where:

n – sample size
N – Population

n = (186) (10%)

n = 19

Research Instrument

The instrument of the study refers to the tool or technique used to collect data in a

research study. The researchers of the study used survey questionnaire as the instrument of the

study to collect data and information needed from the select respondents. A survey questionnaire

is a research instrument used to collect data from a sample of participation in a systematic and

standardized way. The teacher who validated the survey questionnaire carefully review the

survey items and consider their alignment with the researcher objectives. It ensures that the

instrument effectively captures the information necessary for the study. A questionnaire consists

of a set question for the purpose of gathering information from the respondents through the

survey to help us identify their Self Perception in the Academic Competence. The questionnaire

made by the researcher consists of four parts. (1) Daily Routines. (2) Stress Level. (3) Academic

performance (4) Physicality.

Procedures of Data Gathering

The data gathering procedure in a study refers to the specific methods and step followed

to collect relevant information or data for the research. In this study, the data gathering procedure

involved several step to ensure the collection of relevant study. First the survey questionnaire is

prepared by the researcher and one of the teachers consulted to validate the instrument researcher
constructed. The researcher selected the respondents in the Senior High School students at

Mindanao State University Wao Community High School. Then the researcher arrange the

schedule to conduct the study. In the time of gathering the data, the researcher ask permission

from one of the teachers in the Mindanao State University Wao Community High. Researcher

also seek a permission to the respondents if they willing to participate for the researcher to gather

information and then the questionnaire is given to the respondents so that they will be able to

answer the questionnaire. If the respondents ask for help regarding from answering the given

questionnaire the researcher will entertain the respondent.

Treatment of Data

Involves a systematic analysis of relevant variables. The independent variable, sleep

deprivation effects on school daily routines of the senior high school students will be categorized

while the dependent variable will be, the impact of challenges. Through random sampling and

the use of surveys or questionnaires, data on. Statistical methods such as correlation analysis,

descriptive statistics, and hypothesis testing will be employed to explore relationships and

differences between the variables. The significance level will guide the determination of

statistical significance, allowing for the interpretation of whether a notable impact exists. This

analysis will be conducted using appropriate statistical software, ensuring a rigorous examination

of the data. The findings will be interpreted, taking into account limitations, and

recommendations for future research will be provided. Overall, this statistical treatment aims to

provide valuable insights into the dynamics between commuters students and the impact of

challenges among senior high school students at Mindanao State University Wao Community

High School.
Data analysis

After distributing the survey questionnaire the study at Mindanao University Wao

Community High School utilizing correlational method to investigate the sleep deprivation effect

on school Daily Routine. This qualitative research approach focus on analyzing the impact of

commuting on the student's school attendance, transportation cost, and time management.

Before collecting data, that researcher obtained informed consent from all participants, ensuring

the confidentially of their responses throughout the study. Rigorous ethical standards were

upheld to protect the privacy and rights of the involved individuals. The collective data was

meticulously analyzed and conclusions were drown regarding the sleep deprivation effect on

school daily routine on the Senior High Students at Mindanao State University Wao Community

High School.
