OBJECTIVE: TRIGONOMETRY AND IT’S APPLICATION

The aim of this project is to study about the applications of

trigonometry and to get the knowledge about basic formulae and
history of trigonometry .
INTRODUCTION
▪ Trigonometry is derived from two Greek words “trigonon” (three
angles) and “metron” (measure).
▪ Trigonometry is the branch of mathematics which deals with the
triangles, particularly triangles in a plane where one angle of the
triangle is 90 degrees.
▪ Triangles on a sphere are also studied in spherical trigonometry.
▪ Trigonometry specifically deals with the relationships between the
sided and the angles of triangles, that is on the trigonometric
functions, and with calculation based on three functions.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

▪ The origin of trigonometry can be traced to the civilization of ancient

Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Indus valley more than 4000 years ago.
▪ Some experts believe that trigonometry was originally invented to
calculate sundials, a traditional exercise in the oldest books.
▪ The first use of trigonometry came from the Hellenistic
mathematician Hipparchus circa 150 BC, who compiled a
trigonometric table using sine for solving triangles.
▪ The Sulba Sutras written in India, between 800 BC and 500 BC,
correctly compute the sine of π/4 (45°) as 1/√2 in a procedure for
circling the square (the opposite of squaring the opposite squares).
▪ Many ancient mathematicians like Aryabhatta, Brahmagupta, Ibn
Yunus and Al-Kashi made significant contributions in trigonometry
TRIGONOMETRIC RATIOS

Sine(sin) Opposite side/hypotenuse

Cosine(cos) Adjacent side/hypotenuse
Tangent(tan) Opposite side/adjacent side
Cosecant(cosec) Hypotenuse/opposite side
Secant(sec) Hypotenuse/adjacent side
Cotangent(cot) Adjacent side/opposite side
PYTHAGORAS THEOREM

▪Sin = a/h
▪Cos = b/h
▪Tan = a/b
▪Cosec= h/a
▪Sec = h/b
▪Cot = b/a
TRIGONOMETRIC VALUES
TRIGONOMERTIC IDENTITIES
▪ Sin2A +Cos2A = 1
▪ Sec2A-Tan2A =1
▪ Cosec2A-Cot2A=1
▪ Sin (-θ) = – Sin θ
▪ Cos (-θ) = Cos θ
▪ Tan (-θ) = – Tan θ
▪ Cot (-θ) = – Cot θ
▪ Sec (-θ) = Sec θ
▪ Cosec (-θ) = -Cosec θ
▪ Sin (90° – θ) = Cos θ
▪ Cos (90° – θ) = Sin θ
▪ Tan (90° – θ) = Cot θ
▪ Cot (90° – θ) = Tan θ
▪ Sec (90° – θ) = Cosec θ
▪ Cosec (90° – θ) = Sec θ
▪ Sin A + Sin B = 2 Sin(A+B)/2 * Cos(A-B)/2
▪ Cos A + Cos B = 2 Cos(A+B)/2 * Cos(A-B)/2
▪ Sin A – Sin B = 2 Cos(A+B)/2 * Sin(A-B)/2
▪ Cos A – Cos B = -2 Sin(A+B)/2 * Sin(A-B)/2
▪ Sin A. Sin B = [Cos (A – B) – Cos (A + B)]/2
▪ Sin A. Cos B = [Sin (A + B) + Sin (A – B)]/2
▪ Cos A. Cos B = [Cos (A + B) + Cos (A – B)]/2
▪ sin 2θ = 2 sinθ cosθ
APPLICATIONS

Trigonometry has been used in a variety of fields throughout

history, including architecture, theoretical physics, and surveying. It
can be used for a variety of things, including:
• Oceanography, seismology, meteorology, physical sciences,
astronomy, acoustics, navigation, electronics, and many other
subjects are among them.
• It may also be used to determine the length of lengthy rivers,
measure the height of a mountain, and so on.
• Solar, lunar, and stellar locations have all been calculated using
spherical trigonometry and it is also used to measure ground
surfaces as well as roof inclination and roof slopes.
REAL USE OF TRIGONOMERTY
CONCLUSION

We realized that trigonometry can be used in many areas such as

astronomy and architecture they can aid in calculating many things
they can also be used in cars desks and benches. Without really
climbing a tree, you can find the height easily with trigonometry. They
can be so widely used in real life applications and is very useful for
most architects and astronomers. We can conclude that without
trigonometry, life would be much more difficult. Without going
through the troubles, you can easily find something so we think that it
was a good invention by Archimedes and thanks to this many
architects need not go through the trouble to calculate things, so it
really helps in real life applications and not only in our tests and exams.
