METHOD STATEMENT
FOR SOIL NAILING
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
✓ Drilling Equipment:
• Rotary air-flushed and water flushed.
• Down-the-hole hammer
• Tri-cone Bit
• It is important to procure drilling equipment with sufficient power and rigid drill rods.
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
✓ Grout Mixing Equipment:
• In order to produce uniform grout mix, high speed shear colloidal mixer still to be
consider.
• Powerful grout pump is essential for uninterrupted delivery of grout mix.
• If fine aggregates is used as filter for economy, special grout pump shall be used
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
✓ Compressor Equipment:
• The compressor shall minimum capacity to delivered air or shotcrete at the minimum rate
9m3/min.
• Sometime the noise of compressor can be an issue if the work is at close proximity to
residential area, hospital and school.
MATERIAL USED FOR SOIL NAILING
• Steel Reinforcement
• Grout Mix
• Shotcrete / Gunite
INSTALLATION SOIL NAILING

1. Staging or Platform Preparation

• At slope indicate in the drawing or confirm by engineer where soil nail is required.
• Staging shall be prepared where staging is required.
• Temporary or permanent berm drains shall be excavated to prevent slope surface
erosion.
• Staging shall be constructed using standard steel tubular scaffold tubes and to be
secured with standard fixed or swivel clamps.
• The staging shall be erected to the height where drilling for soil nail is required.
INSTALLATION SOIL NAILING

2. Setting out of soil nail positions

• Prior setting out position of Soil
Nail, a proposed numbering
system and positions shall be
submitted to the engineer.
• Upon confirmation, the soil nail
shall be marked on slope surface
with spray paint in accordance
with the engineer’s confirmation.
• All soil nail shall be numbered
for record purposes.
INSTALLATION SOIL NAILING

3. Drilling
• The drill shall be assembled and secured on the prepared staging. Appropriate bit
and hammer shall be fitted and short test run shall be conducted to ensure that the
equipment had been assembled correctly, properly secured and the necessary of
the hydraulic and pneumatic power is available.
• Drilling shall commence using suitable drilling bit to 125mm dia. at inclined position
20° as specified by engineer as shown in the drawing.
• As drilling progresses, the drilled hole shall be flushed periodically and extension
rods shall be added to achieve 6m depth or as specified by engineer as shown in
the drawing.
• On completion of drilling and removal of drilled hole shall be plugged to prevent
entry of foreign materials.
• The drilled hole must not be left behind, no more than 24 hours after being drilled.
INSTALLATION SOIL NAILING

4. Installation
• The T25 with galvanized steel bar of required length, threaded at the exposed end
for a sufficient length to facilitate fixing of nuts and washer, fitted with UPVC
centralizers at 2.0m c/c.
• Before lowering of the steel bar and grouting, the hole shall be flushed clean by
means of compressed air to remove any standing water.
INSTALLATION SOIL NAILING
5. Grouting
Grouting operation shall be in accordance with Section 10.4 BS 8081 (1989). The
proportions of the grout and minimum strength of work cubes shall comply with the
following requirements: -
• Range of water/cement ratio shall be 0.45.
• The quantities of cement in the mix shall be measured by weight in an approve
weight batching or as per bag.
• Site trial mixes shall be carrying out to verify the mix design for each concrete
grade. Non-shrink grout additives “Intra-plast-Z” or equivalent will be added
to cement grout to prevent grout shrinkage and improve workability.
• Six (6) numbers of test cubes (size 100mm x 100mm x 100mm) shall be taken
per one grouting operation for testing purpose. Three (3) test cubes shall be
tested at 7 days and the remaining cubes at 28 days after casting. The
characteristic strength of the grout shall be 21 N/mm² and 30 N/mm² at 7
days and 28 days

INSPECTION & TESTING PROCEDURE

• Survey & Setting Out Verification

• Concrete Testing (Cube test)
- Allowing slab support, nail grout application, and drainage.
• Reinforcement tensile test
• Pull out test
EQUIPMENT FOR PULL OUT TEST
• Load Plate – Size 450mm x 450mm x 25mm (min. thickness)
• Extension Apparatus – Steel angle adjuster (min. 20 mm thicknesses), Jam nut coupling,
extension cylinder, adjustable angle plate.
• Hydraulic Jack – Durajack, model DH-306 (capacity : 30 ton)
• Load Cell – Model ELC – 30S
• Dial Gauge – WIKA, accuracy (0.01mm)
PULL OUT TEST PROCEDURE
1. Selection of Test Point
a) The location of test point for the pull-out test shall be selected by the Engineer
before testing work starts.

2. Preparation
a) A large thick steel bearing plate with a center hole shall be used as a reaction plate
over the surface of the slope. The pull-out of the anchor shall be in exact parallel
direction of the bolt into the slope. This is achieved by the preparation of a
concrete pad and additional adjustment plate to achieve an exact perpendicular
surface to the bar for the bottom of the Hydraulic Hollow Jack to sit on.
b) Specification detail of the Jack must be provided showing the effective area of the
Hydraulic Cylinder Ram.
c) A Calibrated Load Cell with enough capacity must also be used as a Primary Load
Preference.
PULL OUT TEST PROCEDURE
2. Preparation
d) A Calibrated Pressure Gauge with enough capacity must also be used as a
Secondary Load preference.
e) At least 3 Calibrated Dial Gauges with 0.01 mm accuracy must be use over the
surface of the reference plate.
f) The overall setup of the equipment arrangement for the Pull-out Test is as shown in
the sketch below.
PULL OUT TEST PROCEDURE
3. The pullout test
a) A Connecting Coupler shall be used to extend the anchor to accommodate the
equipment installed.
b) The loading sequence of the Pullout Test shall be according to the one proposed
by the consultant.
c) The acceptance criteria of the Pullout Test and the termination of the test shall be
according to the BS 8081: 1989 or to be determined by the engineer at site.
d) The acceptance of rock bolt pullout test to follow BS 8081 Clause 11.4.11.
