Title of Assignment Ecological Impacts Identification
Date of Assignment 18.10.2021
Conducted By Prof. Jagath Manatunge

Introduction and Problem Statement

With regard to the protection of natural habitats and species, civil engineers who undertake
development-related projects, whether small or large, have to work together with ecologists during
the entire project cycle, which should start at the project design stages and should then proceed
through construction, and during operations and maintenance of infrastructure projects.
It is imperative that civil engineers appreciate the ecological impacts of civil engineering projects to
avoid or mitigate such impacts by incorporating appropriate designs, alternatives, construction and
operational methods, etc. to ensure minimum damage to the natural environment. As such
understanding the basic features and functions of the ecological environment are important. The
objective of this assignment is to provide basic knowledge about ecological impacts of civil
engineering projects by identifying important ecological features, describing activities that will
negatively affect ecological resources, and to identify avoidance or mitigation measures.

Description of the Assignment

Details of an infrastructure development project will be provided to the students.
In relation to the given development project, the students are supposed to:
• identify potentially important ecological features
• identify all proposed construction, operating and maintenance activities that may generate
significant ecological impacts;
• identify significant other developments that may give rise to significant positive or negative
impacts
• identify relationships with other environmental issues
• propose suitable spatial and temporal scopes for the assessment and identify the main
ecological issues to be addressed
• confirm potential opportunities for the avoidance of impacts, mitigation, and enhancement of
biodiversity
The format for the short report will be provided to the students.

Deliverables
The written assignment has to be completed individually during the class, to be submitted on the
same day. A short report should be prepared by each student based on the format suggested.

Method of Assessment
The report submitted by each student will be evaluated based on the following: (i) content and
clarity of the write up provided for each section, (ii) proper formatting of the report, (iii) timely
submission
The breakdown of marks is indicated on the assignment.

Assignment A1: Ecological Impacts Identification

Carefully read the description of the case study provided to you and closely study the maps.

Related to the above project, prepare a Report which should include the following:

1. Describe the climatic conditions prevailing in the project area (e.g., Rainfall,
temperature, etc.)
2. Indicate the Agro-ecological zone or zones to which the project area falls.
3. Describe the geology of the area
4. identify potentially important ecological features of the project area
5. identify the proposed construction, operating and maintenance activities that
may generate significant ecological impacts
6. identify significant other developments that may give rise to significant positive
or negative impacts
7. identify relationships with other environmental issues
8. propose suitable spatial and temporal scopes for the assessment
9. identify the main ecological issues to be addressed (focus on biodiversity, habitat
degradation, habitat destruction and Habitat fragmentation and provide
examples for each)
10. confirm potential opportunities for the avoidance of impacts, mitigation, and
enhancement of biodiversity
