FIG : METHODS FOR BEST HEALTH

Description of the Community awareness programmes conducted w.r.t the

problems and their outcomes :

1.Why hygiene matters?

Not bathing can result in a skin condition called dermatitis neglect and secondary
Skimping on hygiene might seem like NBD,and it isn’t if we’re
Talking about the occasional day you don’t brush your teeth until noon. But it matters
when it affects your life or that of the people around you.In the most extreme
cases, when left unattended, poor hygiene can breed disease that can affect you or
others. for example, not washing your hands after you use the toilet, handle food, or
touch dirty surfaces can spread bacteria, viruses, and parasites. These can lead to
infections and diseases, like food poisoning, gastroenteritis, cold and flu, and
hepatitis just to name a few.Poor dental hygiene can lead to tooth decay and gum
disease, which can also affect the heart. An obvious lack of hygiene can also affect a
person’s work and social life. Some companies have a hygiene policy in place for the
protection of employees and company image, especially if you have a public-facing
role. If you work in the food industry or in healthcare, proper hygiene detrimental to
the safety of everyone you’re in contact with.

Page
No:
2. What are the Signs of bad hygiene?

 Body odour from not showering regularly.

 Unwashed ordisheveled hair.
 Bad breath, food between teeth, orsigns of tooth decay and gingivitis.
 Wearing soiled clothing.
 Dirty and untrimmed finger nails and toe nails.
3.What are the Ways to have good hygiene?

 Brush your teeth twice a day. Doing it when you get up and before you go to
bed makes it easier to get into a routine.Remember You only need to brush for
2 minutes for a good clean, so you can do it even if you’re short on time.
 Wash your body daily. A quick shower or bath is all you need, as long as you
cover the important parts(Think:pitsandprivatebits). If access to water is
limited, use a damp cloth or sponge to wash your genitals, around your anus,
under your arms, between any skin folds, and under your breasts.
 Wash your clothes and bedding regularly. Doing laundry once per week is
sufficient, whether by machine or hand. If you need to re- wear clothing,a
quick wash in the sink and hanging it to dry for the next day works fine.
Keeping your body clean lets you extend the time between washing clothing
and sheets.
 Wash your hands often. If COVID-19 taught us anything,it’s that washing our
hands goes a long way in keeping us healthy and reducing the spread of illness.
Remember to wash your hands before and after contact with shared, or
potentially unsanitary or contaminated surfaces to protect yourself and others.
Page
No:
 Wipe properly after going to the toilet.Wiping properly after going to the
toilet will keep under wear clean and unpleasant odorsatbay. Always wipe
front to back to keep bacteria away from the urethra to avoid urinary
infections. Body wipes or a bidet work, too. (Though keep in mind that wipes
can make life hard for sanitation workers. So if you don’t need them, it’s best
to stick with TP). If pain or a disability makes it hard to wipe, consider a toilet
paper aid.
 Wash your hair at least every 3 days. Most people don’t need to shampoo
their hair more than daily. How often you should wash depends on how oily or
dry your hair is,how much you sweat, and how much product you use. Every 2
to 3 days is fine for most people, but feel free to experiment by extending the
time between washes. Bouncy shampoo commercial hair is nice, but a healthy
scalp is the priority.

Page
No:
4. What is Proper oral hygiene?

 Brush.Brush your teeth at twice daily with a toothpaste that contains fluoride
to fight cavities. Aim to brush for at least 2 minutes to ensure you are
removing as much plaque build up as possible.
 Floss.Floss at least once per day.If you don’t like using floss, you can try
alternatives, such as water flossing, using an inter dental tooth brush, or
dental picks.
 Visit your dentist. See your dentist at least once every 6 months. Some
dentists may recommend you come more frequently. This is especially true if
you are prone to cavities, have existing gum disease, or are at risk for gum
disease.
While these are the basics of dental hygiene, there are some other steps you can take to
keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible. These include:
 Drinking fluoridated water. Many cities will add fluoride to their water
supply to enhance dental health. Drinking from the tap can help strengthen
your teeth .For example, drinking fluoridated water can decrease a child’s risk
for tooth decay any where from18 to 40 percent trusted Source.
 Refraining from tobacco use. Smoking cigarettes or using smoke less
tobacco products can increase your risks for dental decay and periodontal
disease.
 Using a fluoridated mouth rinse. This can help if you’ve had a lot of cavities
recently or your dentist tells you that you are at increased risks for cavities.
 Prescription fluoride.Your dentist may prescribe a special fluoride rinse or
gel to use at home if you are at high risk for cavities.
 Upgrading to an electric tooth brush. An electric tooth brush may help to
remove excess plaque buildup from your teeth.
 Having a healthy diet.Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables while
limiting high-sugar foods can reduce the risks for dental decay.

Page
No:
5.Can mental illness Impact Your Hygiene?

 One of the worst things about mental illness is how it seeps into so many parts
of your life, affecting even the most mundane things, like showering and
brushing your teeth.
 And we often struggle to talk about this part of mental health. One of the
reasons why we struggle to talk about it is because hygiene is moralized when
it shouldn’t be.
 Practicing hygiene is a good thing because it can prevent disease and help us
care for our bodies. But unfortunately, we often associate a lack of hygiene
with poverty, laziness, homelessness — all things we, as a society, discriminate
against.
6.Can one be too hygienic?

 You certainly can be too obsessed with hygiene.Certain mental

illnesses might cause people to wash too much or obsess
about cleanliness.
 The mental illness we most commonly associate with
cleanliness is obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Pop
culture’s depictions of OCD, like in “Monk,”“The Big Bang
Theory,” and “Glee” mean we often think of people with OCD
as fastidious, super-organized germophobes who are
convenient punch lines for thoughtless jokes.
Page
No:
 OCD isn’t always about cleanliness — and even when it is, it’s
often mis understood. OCD involves obsessions (distressing
thoughts that you can’t stop thinking about)and compulsions
(rituals oractions you take to reduce your distress).
 The obsessions could be about hygiene, but it could also be a
fear like burning down your house, hurting someone or
yourself, orangering God. When it does involve hygiene rituals,
like washing your hands, the fear (or obsession) might be
about germs — but it could also be about something else.
 Mainly explains that when you have hygiene-related OCD
compulsions, you might wash your hands a set number of
times or brush your teeth with a certain number of strokes.
 Those who have OCD may have difficulty attending to personal
hygiene in a fluid manner, for they may feel the need to
perform certain hygiene rituals repeatedly (such as washing
hands a certain number of times)before moving to the next task,”
Manly says. These compulsions can make it difficult for you to leave the house
on time or function throughout day.

7.What to do when mental illness is affecting your relationship with hygiene?

Most people feel a little too lazy to shower once in a while. Most of us
sometimes feel a little “gross” and decide to wash ourselves more vigorously than
usual. So,how do you know it’s “bad enough” for you to need help.In general, you
should get help if an issue is making it hard for you to function. If you struggle to
practice hygiene even when you know you should, or if you feel that you wash
yourself excessively, you may need help. Therapy is a great place to start. You
might feel a shamed, as I did, to tell your therapist that you struggle to practice
good hygiene. Please remember that this is a fairly common symptom of mental
illness, and your therapist has probably helped people in your shoes before — and
they’re there to help you, not judge you for your mental state. As for washing
excessively, Manly says that the root of the anxiety must be addressed in order to
address the issue. This also often requires therapy.“To reduce the level of
washing in conjunction with therapy, the individual can also strive to reduce
anxiety by learning to use calming breathing techniques, short meditations, and
positive mantras,” Manly says.“Tools such as these can be used to calm the mind
and body as they encourage self-soothing and self-control.”No matter which self-
care tools help you, it’s important to remind yourself that moralizing hygiene

Page
No:
helps nobody.

8. What is the link between frequent hand washing and eczema?

 If you have eczema, you might have noticed that the

skin on your hands has become dry, red, itchy, and even
cracked since the start of the pandemic .This is because

FIG : Promoting About Regular Hand Wash

9. How to Prevent hand eczema?

 Avoid washing your hands with soap after using alcohol-based sanitizers.

 Always use hand moisturizer immediately after washing or sanitizing. Carry it

with you whenever you leave the house.
 Use gentle cleansers and handsanitizers free from fragrance and unnecessary
antiseptic ingredients.
 Don’t wear jewelry because it can trap soap and detergent and irritate your
skin.
 Use anti-inflammatory topical medication when needed, following advice from
a specialist.
 Stress can make symptoms worse.Try to practice relaxation and mind fulness
techniques.
 Seek expert advice if your symptoms get more severe.
10. What are obsessions?

Page
No:
 Obsessive thoughts can interrupt your daily life, upsetting you and
making it hard to do things you want to do. Even if you’re aware they
aren’t real and know you won’t act on them, you may still feel
distressed and worry you could act on them. As a result, you might try
to avoid everything that triggers these thoughts. There are several
types of obsessions, and it’s common to experience more than one
type. Symptoms generally depend on the type.

11.What are compulsions?

 Compulsions refer to mental or physical responses or behaviors to obsessions.

You may feel the need to repeat these behaviors over and over even though you
don’t actually want to bedoing them. This can take up hours of your day. Carrying
out these compulsions brings about a sense of relief from an obsession, but this
feeling is usually short-lived.
 Sometimes compulsions are related and relevant to an obsession. For example,
you might check, unlock, and relock your front door seven times before leaving
to prevent a break-in.But in othercases, they might be totally unrelated. For
example, you might tap a specific area of a wall before leaving the house because
you feel it helps to prevent getting in a car accident on your way to work.

12.Can Obsessions exist without Compulsions?

 While we typically think of obsessions and compulsions in the context of OCD,

there’s a lesser- known variation of OCD that some refer to as “pureO.”Then a
mecomes from the idea that it involves only obsessions. Experts trusted Source
believe this type generally still involves compulsive rituals, just
 That the serituals look different from typical compulsive behaviors.Pure O
commonly involves intrusive thoughts and images.
 Hurting yourself or other people.
 Sexual acts, particularly those you consider wrong, immoral,or harmful to others.
 Blasphemous or religious thoughts
 Unwanted or unpleasant thoughts about romantic partners and other people
 You might worry about acting on these thoughts or spend a lot of time worrying
they make you a bad person. These thoughts can actually be part of a compulsion.
They just aren’t as visible and concrete as the compulsions people usually think
of.It’s also common to spend a lot of time tracing thoughts to understand them
and reassure yourself you won’t act on them. You might also pray or repeat
specific phrases to cancel out an image or thought.

Report of the mini-project work done in the related subject w.r.t the
habitation/village.

A mini-project work in the related subject w.r.t the habitation/village. (For ex., a
student of Botany may do a project on Organic Farming or Horticulture or usage of
biofertilizers or biopesticides or effect of the inorganic pesticides, etc. A student of
Zoology may do a project on Aquaculture practices or animal husbandry or poultry
or health and hygiene or Blood group analysis or survey on the Hypertension or
survey on the prevalence of diabetes, etc.

PURE WATER :
Pure water is an other source of good health.Much of the disease is caused
by the use of impure water. People in the villages bathe often, and wash clothing
and livestock in tanks. If this water is used for consumption, it can lead to
disastrous diseases. To make the water pure, it must be boiled so that it does no
harm.

BALANCED AND NUTRITIOUS FOOD :

Healthy food keep sour health good. Some ofThe food we eat serves as a
fire to keep the body warm; another part forms the flesh to give us strength. Pure
milk is the most nutritious food. Vegetables and many other things that we
generally take are nutritious foods. A mixed diet is the best food for us. Stale and
rotten food is dangerous for your health. Meals must be taken at fixed times.
Overeating causes many diseases. Special attention is needed onfood when an
epidemic prevails.

CLEANLINESS:
Cleanliness is necessary for good health. This is the most important
hygiene habit. Dirt spreads diseases because germs thrive there. They move
with the dust in the air, so that a dirty man is easily attacked by diseases. The
man, who has a clean body and clean clothes, is free of dirt and dust, and no
disease can easily attack him. The daily bath is a good habit. He keeps our
body clean. We should keep our clothes, bedding, food, utensils and everything
else clean and clean. No dirt should be to be allowed to gather near our homes.
We should also keep our teeth and nails clean. We should remember that
cleanliness is close to piety.
Page

EYE CARE : We should take good care of our eyes.Insufficient light and too
much light are harmful to our eyes. The eyes become tired by the study and need
rest. Bathing your eyes with cold water at night is a good hygiene habit.
Hygiene is the science and art of maintaining and improving one's physical and
mental well- being. Hygiene enables people to have a healthy interaction with
their surroundings. It is applicable to both individuals and communities.
Recognize the importance of hygiene and sanitation in maintaining good health.
Our hands keep touching so many surfaces such as handrails, smart phones,
steering wheels while driving, etc. Hands are the part of the body that spreads
germs the most easily. It takes less than a minute to wash our hands; still, many
people refrain from doing this. Good hand hygiene is proven beneficial in
preventing the spread of diseases amongst society and family. As per the World
Health Organization(WHO),washing hands with soap and water is sufficient to
prevent the spread of certain diseases by almost 50%.The next important part of
the body that needs proper hygiene is the eye. We are all aware that the eyes are
the most delicate part of the body. So taking care of it is not only essential but a
necessity. We are surrounded by thousands of electronic things which have a bad
impact on the eyes. Keeping the eyes clean must be a frequent task in our daily
routine. While playing in the school, kids must take care of their belongings, such
as their water bottles. It is important to keep such things in a clean place. Keeping
the bottle here and there and then drinking from the same water bottle is harmful
to health. Parents and teachers play a vital role in creating awareness about
hygiene in kids. Hygiene is like a preventive measure that keeps us away from
diseases and various other health ailments. No matter how much you care about
cleanliness, if the potable water itself is not clean, then it is of no use. Water needs
to be not only clean but also healthy. Water is used throughout the day, from
drinking, cooking to cleanliness activities. Hence, it is important to use
cleanwater. Civilians must be made aware of how to maintain hygiene in public
places like hospitals. Hospitals are generally crowded with patients and it is
obvious that the place will be a hotspot of bacteria and viruses.Hence, it is
important to use hand sanitizers and maintaina safe distance from visibly sick
people. The next critical step towards a healthy life is oral hygiene—proper oral
hygiene wards off gum diseases, bad breath and many infections. Understanding
the importance of hygiene will make it easier to eradicate the disease from the
world.
Physical fitness is of utmost importance. The body that carries the weighth as to be
fit to endure all the other challenges that a person faces in life. A healthy body not
just helps stay away from diseases butal so creates mind fulness. There are many
ways in which a wellness coach can help to reform physicalwellness.
Page
No:
EATING RIGHT : A wellness coach will always advise picking food that makes
the body stronger and not that makes it vulnerable.Selection of proper nutrition
and in the right amount is crucial.
EXCERSING WELL:They will educate how daily exercising in any form is
beneficial for maintaining a healthy weight and for muscles and bones as it brings
flexibility and endurance.
Alcohol, drugs, and smoking gives nothing more than a kick for that moment.
We are all aware that excessive consumption may create hostile health conditions
that may lead to life-threatening diseases.A wellness professional will always
suggest ditching these habits.
SLEEPING WELL:Sleep is an necessary human activity that provides rest to the
body and supports crucial functions of the body. If someone has trouble sleeping,
a coach will suggest ways to get better sleep.

HYGIENE IS CRUCIAL : helps to lessen the need for medical assistance:we are
all susceptible to a variety of ailments around the world. Diabetes,
hypertension,cardiovascular disease,cancer,gastrointestinal problems,asthma, and
lung disorders affect a large portion of the world's population. Some of these
diseases are deadly, and there is no treatment that can save a person's life.

Importance of Good Hygiene :

Routine cleaning of hands, food, sites and surfaces(suchas

toilet seats and flush handles, door and tap handles, work
surfaces, bath and basin surfaces) in the kitchen, bathroom and
toilet rooms reduces the spread of pathogens. The infection risk
from flush toilets is not high, provided they are properly
maintained, although some splashing and aerosol formation
can occur during flushing, particularly when someone has
diarrhea. Pathogens can survive in the scum or scale left
behind on baths, showers, and washbasins after washing and
bathing.

Thorough cleaning is important in preventing the spread

of fungal infections. Molds can live on wall and floor tiles and
on shower curtains. Mold can be responsible for infections,
cause allergic responses, deteriorate/damage surfaces, and
cause unpleasant odors. Primary sites of fungal growth are
inanimate surfaces, including carpets and soft furnishings. Air-
borne fungi are usually associated with damp conditions, poor
ventilation, or closed air systems.
 Mechanical removal (i.e., cleaning) using a soap or
detergent. To be effective as a hygiene measure, this
process must be followed by thorough rinsing under
running water to remove pathogens from the surface.
 Using a process or product that inactivates the
pathogens in situ.Pathogen kill is achieved using a
"micro-biocide" product ,i.e., a disinfectant or
antibacterial product; waterless hand sanitizer; or by
application of heat.
 In some cases combined pathogen removal with kill is
used, e.g., laundering of clothing and household
linens such as towels and bed linen.

MEDICAL HYGIENE AT HOME:

Medical hygiene pertains to the hygiene practices that prevents

or minimizes disease and the spreading of disease in relation to
administering medical care to those who are infected or who are
more "at risk" of infection in the home. Across the world,
governments are increasingly under pressure to fund the level of
healthcare that people expect. Care of increasing numbers of patients
in the community, including at home is one answer, but can be
fatally undermined by inadequate infection control in the home.
Increasingly, all of these "at-risk" groups are cared for at home by a
carrier who may be a household member who thus requires a good
knowledge of hygiene. People with reduced immunity to infection,
who are looked after at home, make up an increasing proportion of
the population (currently up to 20%). The largest proportion are the
elderly who have co-morbidities, which reduce their immunity to
infection. It also includes the very young, patients discharged from
hospital, taking immune suppressive drugs or using invasive
systems, etc. For patients discharged from hospital, or being treated
at home special "medical hygiene" (see above) procedures may need
to be performed for them e.g. catheter or dressing replacement,
which puts them at higher risk of infection.

Antiseptics may be applied to cuts, wounds abrasions of the skin to

prevent the entry of harmful bacteria that can cause sepsis. Day-to-
day hygiene practices, other than special medical hygiene
procedures are no different for those at increased risk of infection
than for other family members. The difference is that, if hygiene
practices are not correctly carried out, the risk of infection is much
greater.

Personal Hygiene practices for children, and community :

The toddlers and children play every where, and use their dirty hands to
scratch an itch, eating food or wiping their nose. They should be taught about
healthy and hygienic practices. Some of the important hygiene practices are:

Hand-washing: One of the critical habits which should be taught to children

(and should be adopted by all) is hand-washing at all crucial times. Ensuring
proper hand- washing with soap,at all critical times (before eating food, and
also handling food, water any eatable, and after defecation) will keep us
protected from diseases and infections that are spread through our touch, and it
will also help in preventing recurring common cold and flu. Six steps of hand
washing should be demonstrated and children should be made to practice it
and learn it well. They should be told about critical times when hand washing
is essential; before eating and after defecation, blowing nose,or playing outside
and touching common places.

Bathing: Bathing properly on a daily basis, is a critical hygiene practice for all
of us. Teach children to take bath properly, preferably with soap. Ensure that
everyone in community adopts these practices. Regularly cutting hair and
nails, shaving or trimming beard / moustaches, and keeping them clean is also
important

Coughing and sneezing etiquette: Explain and demonstrate the
protective measures to be taken while sneezing. ("See how I put a
tissue/ handkerchief over my nose and mouth so I didn't spread
germs?"). Teach small children to blow by Operational Design to
conduct Monthly Campaign days | 37 pressing one nostril closed
while exhaling gently through the other.

Tooth brushing: Children need help in ensuring dental hygiene till

around eight years of age. Explain and demonstrate correct way of
brushing teeth (in vertical soft rubbing) and make them comfortable
with it, by practicing. Suggest the children to adopt a habit of
brushing teeth twice a day.

Skin care: Toddlers and preschool children need parents to help

them with skin care. Skin blemishes like, rashes, bumps and scabs,
are common at this age. Proper bathing and use of moisturizing
lotion (or mild oil like coconut oil) after bath is required to take care
of the skin, by not only children but by all.

Nails: Fingernails are a breeding ground for bacteria. The germs

that live under nails easily transfer to eyes, nose, and mouth. Help
the children learn to keep their nails trimmed and clean.

Teaching the children using the toilet: Train your child to use
toilet, and adopt habits that are important for cleanliness. Proper
cleaning of buttocks after defecation and subsequently proper hand-
washing is a critical hygienic habit.

Regular home cleaning practices for a healthy home :

We need to regularly and properly clean our home to prevent the spread of
Illnesses. Household cleaning tasks need to be usually done according to the
following time table :
Several times daily:

❖ Wipe down kitchen benches after food preparation.

❖ Wash dishes and cooking utensils after each meal.

Once daily:

❖ Sweep the floors.

❖ Empty the kitchen rubbish bin.

❖ Clean the courtyard and surroundings of the house

Once or twice every week :

❖ Wash the floors

❖ Clean the toilet.

❖ Clean the laundry tubs.

❖ Clean the shower recess/bath and hand basin.

❖ Dust surfaces

Once every month:

❖ Clean the stove/ovenand refrigerator

Key components of a Healthy Lifestyle :

Healthy Diet :

The quantity of food that we need to meet body requirements differs

with age, gender, body composition and physical activity. Those
who engage in heavy physical work need to eat more, but those who
do not do much physical activity need lower quantities. It is
advisable for all of us to eat balanced and nutritious food, which has
a right balance of all food groups, namely grains (eg. Wheat, Rice,
Jawar, Bajra), pulses (Arhar, Chana dal), Vegetables, and Fruits.
There should be an optimum balance of Fat,
Carbohydrate,Protein,Vitamins and Minerals in our daily diet.

Page
No:
Regular Physical Activity :

Adults should undertake atleast 150 minutes of moderate exercise every week. This can
be spread through out the week e.g. 30 minutes of activity 5 times per week. Examples
of moderate exercises are; brisk walking (walking fast), climbing stairs, jogging,
cycling, dancing, playing sports and games, yoga, carrying/moving moderate loads.

Page
No:
Avoiding Tobacco :

Avoiding consumption of tobacco of all forms is an important step to a

healthy lifestyle. All different ways of consumption of tobacco, including
smoking (cigarettes, bidis, cigars, hookah) and smokeless (gutkha, zarda,
mawa, pan masala, gudakhu) forms are equallydangerous for health. The
negative health impacts include both long term (i.e. High BP, Heart Attack
and Cancer) and short-term (Asthma, bad breath and tooth decay)effects.

Avoid harmful use of Alcohol: Although alcohol has been consumed in

India for a long time, in recent years the harmful use of alcohol has increased.
This means that people are drinking in quantities, which has harmful effects
on body. Harmful effects of alcohol consumption includes damages to the
heart, causing stroke and high blood pressure, increasing the risk of
developing certain cancers - mouth, food pipe, throat, liver and breast. It leads
to a variety of problems related to the liver, kidney, and pancreas, and
weakens the body’s ability to fight diseases.

Page

Kitchen Hygiene Practice:

1. Keep clean: Protect kitchen areas and food from insects, pests and
other animals and keep food covered or in closed containers.

2. Keep raw and cooked food separately.

3. Cook thoroughly.

4. Keep food at safe temperatures: Do not leave cooked food at

room temperature for more than 2 hours. When food is kept for
longer periods ,it should be placed in a cool and dry place.

5. Use safe water and raw materials.

6. Use long handle ladle in your house - to fetch water from the
water container, or use a container with a tap. The water containers
should be kept on a clean and dry place preferably on a higher
platform.

Important information related to Common Non Communicable Diseases :

Diabetes:When you eat or drink, much of your food is broken down

into a simple sugar called "glucose." People with diabetes either
don't make insulin or their body's cells are resistant to insulin,
leading to high levels of sugar circulating in the blood, called simply
high blood sugar. Persistence of High blood sugar levels damages
important parts of our body and its functioning like, kidney, liver
and heart. Blood sugar levels need to be monitored and managed
with medication and lifestyle changes, which includes, control on
diet and regular physical activity.

Page
No:
Hypertension: Hypertension is also referred to as “silent killer”.
This is because it can exist without causing any warning signs or
symptoms. High blood pressure, if not controlled, can lead to
damage of blood vessels, heart and other organs, such as the brain,
kidneys and eyes. Regular screening of blood pressure helps in
making an early diagnosis of hypertension. This is helpful in taking
early corrective measures leading to better control and management
of blood pressure

Cancer:

Cancer is a disease caused by uncontrolled division of cells in any

part of the body. This causes abnormal growth of that part of the body.
The cancer can also spread to other distant parts of the body through the
blood. There is a variety of cancers that are prevalent in our country, but
the three most common cancers in India are; cancer of the cervix and
breast among women and oral cancers in both women and men.

Steps and Methods to stop transmission of diseases through Vectors/Mosquitoes :

To stop the spread of vector borne diseases, action has to be taken at many levels :

1.Environmental Changes :
❖ Long lasting physical transformation of vector habitats that
involves improving water supply lines (to plug leakages
that lead to water logging), mosquito proofing (closing the
openings with mosquito nets) of overhead tanks, cisterns
or underground reservoirs.
❖ Management of essential and non-essential water containers
and management or removal of natural breeding sites.

2.Changes at household level :

Steps to reduce man-virus contact by mosquito proofing of

houses with screens ondoors/windows will be taken.

3.Biological Control Measures to Stop Mosquito Breeding :

Larvivorous fish are recommended for control of some types
of mosquito (Ae. Aegypti) in large water bodies or large water
containers. A type of Endotoxin-producing bacteria, Bacillus
thuringiensis serotype H-14 (Bt H-14) has been found an effective
mosquito control agent.

Page
No:
4.Chemical Control Measures to Stop Mosquito Breeding :

In this method a chemical is poured into water containers

which kills mosquitoes. We can also use oils which are poured
on to the water surface suffocating the larvae and pupae.

5.Personal Protection :

Personal protection is very important in keeping us safe

from vector borne diseases. Protective clothing and repellents
are common means of personal protection against mosquitoes
and other biting insects. Household insecticide products,
namely, insecticide treated bed nets, mosquito coils, pyrethrum
space spray and aerosols have been used extensively for
personal protection against mosquitoes. Care should be taken
while using Mosquito repellents: Mosquito repellents are quite
effective but they should be used with the caution, do not use
them for infants below 2 months of age. For infants older than
2 months, apply repellents containing 10 per cent DEET; but
avoid applying them on palms, near eyesor mouth. Always read
the instructions on the label of these repellents, particularly for
babies, pregnant and breastfeeding women. Natural repellent
like Neem Oil can also be used effectively to prevent mosquito
bite.
