Lesson 6 Graphic Design Software
Performance Standards: The learners create videos with graphics design in a safe and responsible
manner.
Content: Graphic design software; 1. Software, 2. User interface, 3. Setting page size and resolution, 4.
Types of graphics, 5. Photo editing.
Let’s Explore!
Graphic design tools are like the paintbrushes and canvases of the digital world. They help us
create visuals that communicate ideas, tell stories, and catch the eye. From designing a logo to editing a
photo, these tools are essential for a wide range of graphic design tasks. In the future, these tools will
become even more important. As we use visuals in more areas of our lives, from social media to
business presentations, knowing how to use graphic design tools effectively will be a valuable skill in
many careers and fields of study.
Imagine you’re working on a project to design a poster for a school event. You might use graphic
design software like Adobe Illustrator to create the layout and graphics, set the page size and resolution,
choose the types of graphics to use, and edit photos to include in the poster.
Software: Graphic design software includes programs like Adobe Photoshop for photo editing,
Adobe Illustrator for vector graphics, and Canva for easy-to-use design templates.
1) Raster graphics, which are made up of pixels and are typically used for photos, while
2) Vector graphics, which are made up of mathematical paths and are used for designs that
need to be scaled to different sizes.
Photo Editing: This involves altering a photo using software. You can adjust aspects like
brightness and contrast, remove unwanted elements, add effects, and more.
Let’s Try!
Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editor and design program developed and marketed by
Adobe Inc. It is used by design professionals worldwide to create digital graphics, illustrations, and
typography for all kinds of media: print, web, interactive, video, and mobile.
The User Interface of Adobe Illustrator: The Adobe Illustrator interface is divided into five main
parts: the Menu Bar, the Control Panel, the Tool Panel, the Artboard, and the Panels (Layers, Stroke,
Gradient, etc.). Each of these areas has a specific function that contributes to the overall user experience
of the software.
Setting Page Size and Resolution: To set the page size, go to File > New. In the New Document
dialog box, you can set the width and height of your document. You can also choose a preset from the
Size drop-down menu.
Illustrator uses vector graphics, which are resolution-independent and can be scaled to any size
without losing quality. However, if you’re working with raster effects or exporting raster files, you can
adjust the resolution in Effect > Document Raster Effects Settings. Adobe Photoshop Introduction to the
Software: Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editor developed and published by Adobe Inc. It is the
industry standard in digital art and image manipulation, widely used by photographers, graphic
designers, and digital artists for enhancing and editing photos, creating digital paintings, and even
designing websites and mobile apps.
The User Interface: The Photoshop interface is composed of the Menu Bar, the Options Bar,
the Tool Panel, and the Panels (Layers, Channels, Paths, etc.). The Canvas is the area where you’ll be
doing your work.
Setting Page Size and Resolution: To set the page size and resolution, go to File > New. In the
New Document dialog box, you can set the width, height, and resolution of your document.
Placing an Image: To place an image, go to File > Place Embedded... or File > Place Linked...,
then select the image file you want to place.
Creating an Image Adjustment Layer: To create an adjustment layer, go to Layer > New
Adjustment Layer, then choose the type of adjustment you want to make.
Adjusting Brightness: To adjust brightness, add a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer (Layer >
New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast...). Use the Brightness/Contrast slider to adjust the
brightness. Removing Unwanted Elements: The Clone Stamp Tool and the Healing Brush Tool are both
located in the Tools Panel. They are used to sample pixels from one area of an image and apply them to
another area. Removing Background Image: To remove a background, you can use the Quick Selection
Tool or the Magic Wand Tool to select the background, then press Delete to remove it.
Adding Effects: Photoshop offers a wide range of effects through its Layer Styles (Layer > Layer
Style). Here you can add effects like drop shadows, glows, bevel and emboss, etc.
Let’s Apply!
1. Open Adobe Illustrator and create a new document with a size of 800x600 pixels.
2. Use the shape tools (rectangle, ellipse, polygon, etc.) to create a simple shape for your logo.
3. Use the text tool to add the name of your imaginary company to the logo.
4. Experiment with different colors, gradients, and stroke weights to enhance your logo.
5. Save your work and present it to the class.
