1.0 Scope:

To provide detailed and clear procedure to be understood and implemented by all concerned
Employees and Sub contractors on Excavation Works

2.0 References:

1. Project Specification
2. Relevant GFC Drawings
3. Relevant IS Standards
4. Inspection and Testing Plan

3.0 Control Measures:

HSEM Procedures –

i) Use of PPE’s

ii) Excavation

iii) Drilling and Blasting

iv) Operations of Dumpers

iv) Earth Moving Machinery

4.0 Procedure:
General:
 Site Clearance: Before the earth work is started, the area coming under cutting and
filling shall be cleared of shrubs, grass, vegetation etc.
 Setting out: A masonry pillar to serve as a bench mark will be erected at a suitable point
and connected with the Standard Bench Mark. The ground levels shall be taken at 5 to
15m intervals. The ground levels shall be recorded in field books and plotted on plans.
These plans shall be signed by Project Manger or their authorized representatives
before the earth work is started.
The corners of the building shall be established based on the setting out drawing and
distances shall be checked and approved.
Existing Services – Investigate and acquire information about the site services might
have been placed/embedded below the ground. Services, wherever found shall be
rerouted and protected to place will not affect site activities.
 Arrangement for dewatering pumps and hose pipes should be made as per the
requirements of the site.
 If shoring or pinning of the excavated area has to be done, then all the necessary
drawings and details should be available.
 If blasting has to be done, then a certified and experienced contractor should be
nominated and necessary permission to be obtained from the competent authority. The
site conditions should be well understood by both the site staff and the blasting
contractor so that all the necessary safety precautions can be taken.
During Excavation:
 The area to be excavated shall be properly marked and cleared before starting the
works. All excavation operations shall be done by manually or mechanically.
 Top soil for a depth of 300mm shall be excavated and stacked at the designated area if
top soiling conservation is required.
 The depth of excavation shall be periodically checked by an Engineer/ Surveyor to avoid
over excavation.
 The excavation shall be done true to levels, slope, shape and pattern as specified.
 The last 100 to 200mm of excavation shall be done manually as far as possible. This
helps in avoiding over excavation. Also, mechanical excavators could disturb the
underlying hard strata, which will reduce its SBC.
 All excavated material shall be kept minimum of 1.0m from the edge of excavation or
shall be stock piled to the area designated. Clear records should be maintained about
how many loads of soil has been removed from the site.
 The material obtained from excavation which is not considered suitable (such as black
cotton soil) for filling operations shall be disposed-off at designated place.
 For all excavation activities, adequate safety barriers, sign boards, advance warning
signs would be used.
 In case, excavation in rock is involved, then the excavation will be carried out with the
help of rock splitters, power drills and jack hammers etc. Split rocks shall be collected
and stacked at designated place as approved.
 Dewatering shall be done with appropriate method depending upon the site condition
whenever required with approval by Engineer. Proper provision for draining of the
water away from the footing area shall be made.
 Ramp/ Safe access provision shall be provided at the required location or mass
excavation.
After Excavation:
 Once the excavation is complete, the successive activities should immediately start.
 It is not good construction practice to keep the excavation area open for a long time as
it would soften the soil and reduce its SBC because of weathering.
 The structural consultant should inspect the site after the required depth of excavation
is achieved, to ascertain its strength and stability of the bearing stratum.
 Obtain approval for required soil strata before PCC.
 The sloped wall of any excavation pit should be protected with sheet.
 Dewatering shall be done with appropriate method depending upon the site condition
whenever required with approval by Engineer.

5.0 Inspection Procedure:

 Check for barrication and cautions signs are available at the sites.
 Check for the availability of approved site plans and soil investigation report.
 Check if the natural ground level is recorded on site.
 Check if the marking is in conformance with the drawings. The centerline should be
checked and certified.
 Check the depth, length, breadth and level of excavation using measuring tapes and
auto level, as per the drawings
 Wherever the depth of the trench is more than a meter, barricade all around the
excavated site at a distance of one meter from the circumference of the excavated pit.
 Make sure that a suitable area is there for stocking the excavated material.
 Check if a ramp is needed for vehicular movement.
 Check for the availability of dewatering pumps of required type and capacities.
 Check if the depth of excavation has been achieved.
 Check if the blasting/splitting is being carried out by a certified and licensed contractor.
6.0Tools & Equipment’s:
Tools:
 Tikav with handle (Axe)
 Phavada with handle (Spade)
 Ghamelas (Mortar pans)
 Crow bar, Chisels, Hammers with handle
 Line Dori (Nylon string), Measuring tape

 Excavator
 Tractor, Dumper Truck
 Compressors with Jack hammers (if required)
 Drills and Drilling Equipments, splitters, power drills (if required)

7.0 Health and Safety Hazard Assessment:

Identified possible hazards are as follows,

 Fall of person/ materials.

 Lack of attentiveness, knowledge and fitness
 Soil Collapse

All HSE requirements are followed in accordance with safety plan and policies.
 Signage’s and barricade requirements are identified and implemented.
 Area lighting will be provided for night works.
 First AID box will be provided at the site office.
 Good housekeeping shall be ensured.
