6) Reflection writing: Writing “Reflections” help the learner to learn about learning and optimizing
it. Some of the stated advantages of reflections are:
How to Reflect?
While there are no hard and fast rules, still, most of the times, some unsaid rules are
followed when writing (or orally stating) reflections. Reflections are always written in first
3
person with lot of 'I' statements. This helps to take ownership of the process and allows the
student to learn from it. It is usually better to try to answer the following questions when
writing reflections:
a. What happened? Try to describe the situation from learning perspective. What was the
context, who all were involved, who did what, what was your role, what went well, what
needs improvement and so on.
b. So what? Here describe how the situation was different from what you knew or
anticipated, what were the differences in approach, what were the results and what have
you learnt from it.
c. What next? This section is based on the previous two. You have noted the differences;
you have learnt something, so how are you going to use this information in future. If you
face a similar situation again, what differently will you do and why.
