MUSCULAR SYSTEM

The document outlines a lesson plan for students to understand the functions of the muscular, skeletal, digestive, circulatory, and respiratory systems. It details the types of muscles (skeletal, smooth, cardiac), their functions, and how they work together to facilitate movement and other bodily functions. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy muscular system through exercise, diet, hydration, and rest.

HUMAN BODY SYSTEM

Science 4-2nd Quarter (Week 1, Day 1-2)

DAY 1- WHAT IS MUSCLE?

Muscle is an organ that can relax and contract, which moves/control your
body.

Muscles are made from thousands of fibres (like threads) which are stretchy.
When they stretch and tighten, they help us to make movements.
The muscles in our body help us have good posture and to circulate blood
around the body.
!!! Did you know, the smallest muscle in your body is
only 6mm long! its in your ear called stapedius muscle
THERE ARE 2 TYPES OF
MUSCLES MOVEMENT:

Voluntary movements: are Involuntary movements:

the actions that you can happen automatically without
control. you thinking about them.
THREE MAIN TYPES OF MUSCLE TISSUE

SKELETAL SMOOTH CARDIAC

ONE: SKELETAL MUSCLES

·Skeletal muscles are the only muscles that can be

consciously controlled. They are attached to bones, and
contracting the muscles causes movement of those
bones.
·Any action that a person consciously undertakes
involves the use of skeletal muscles. Examples of such
activities include running, chewing, and writing.
TWO: SMOOTH MUSCLES

Smooth muscles are involuntary muscles (this means

that we do not need to think about moving them or
remind them to move).
They are in the walls of some of our internal organs and
they help those organs to work properly.
The intestine (inside your tummy) and diaphragm (under
your lungs) are both types of smooth muscles. This
means the muscles in your digestive system keep doing
intestines
their thing without any reminders!
THREE: CARDIAC MUSCLES

The cardiac muscle is the muscle within the heart.

The heart is made up of 3 layers - the thickest layer
is the cardiac muscle.
We need our heart to pump blood around the body.
It’s the most important muscle in the body!
The cardiac muscle is an involuntary muscle (meaning
it works on its own without any reminders).
DAY 2- HOW DO MUSCLES WORK?

EXCITEMENT MOVEMENT

activation signals movement.
HOW DO MUSCLE PAIRS WORK?

One muscle contracts (gets tighter and When the bone needs to move back into its
shorter) which makes the muscle pull on the original position, the muscle that was relaxed
bone, allowing the bone to move. The other starts to contract again and, at the same time,
muscle in the pair will relax (get longer). the contracted muscle relaxes.

Some joints in the human body are not very flexible and can only make limited
movements. Your knees, elbows, spine and neck are some of these joints.
MUSCLE PAIRS: BICEPS AND TRICEPS

biceps
To bend the arm, the biceps contract (get tighter) and pull on the bone.

At the same time, the triceps relax. This allows the elbow to bend.

To straighten the arm again, the triceps contract and the biceps relax.

FUNCTION OF THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM

Movement
-The muscular system’s main function is to allow movement. When muscles
contract, they contribute to gross and fine movement.
Heat Production
-Muscle contractions generate heat, crucial for regulating body
temperature.
Posture and Stability
-Muscles aid in sustaining posture and stabilizing joints.
Respiration
-The diaphragm and intercostal muscles are pivotal for breathing.
FUNCTION OF THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM

Digestion
-Smooth muscles in the digestive tract facilitate the movement of food through the
digestive system
Circulation
-Cardiac muscles propel blood, while smooth muscles in blood vessels regulate blood
flow and pressure.
Organ Protection
-Muscles in the torso protect the internal organs at the front, sides, and back of the
body. The bones of the spine and the ribs provide further protection.
FUNCTION OF THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM

Urination
-Urinary problems, such as poor bladder control or retention of urine, are caused by
damage to the nerves that carry signals to the muscles.
Childbirth
-Smooth muscles in the uterus expand and contract during childbirth. These
movements push the baby through the vagina. Also, the pelvic floor muscles help to
guide the baby’s head down the birth canal.
Vision
-Six skeletal muscles around the eye control its movements.
