SESSIONAL OUTCOME: After completion of the sessional student should be able to

2. Make modifications in the design as per hardware and specification constraints
3. Test the performance of circuits and tweak suitable changes to suit the specification

DIGITAL SYSTEM DESIGN (3-1-0)


COURSE OBJECTIVE:
This subject aims
1. To understand concepts of digital electronics and to formulate, design and solve different
digital circuits.
2. To design, implement and simulate various combinational and sequential circuits.
3. To understand various logic families and memory modules.
4. To provide the students with a solid foundation in engineering fundamentals required to
solve problems and also to pursue higher studies.
MODULE CONTENT HOURS
MODULE 1 Logic Simplification: Review of Boolean Algebra and De Morgan’s 6
Theorem, SOP & POS forms, Canonical forms, Karnaugh maps up to
5 variables, Binary codes, Code Conversion, Binary addition and
subtraction using 2’s and 1’s complements.
MODULE 2 Combinational Logic Design: MSI devices like Half and Full Adders, 8
Subtractors, Serial and Parallel Adders, BCD Adder, Binary
multiplier, magnitude comparator, Multiplexers, Encoder, Decoder,
MODULE 3 Sequential Logic Design: Building blocks like S-R, D, T, JK and 10
Master-Slave JK FF, Edge triggered FF, Ripple and Synchronous
counters, Shift registers, Analysis of clocked sequential circuits,
Finite state machines, Design of synchronous FSM,
MODULE 4 Logic Families and Semiconductor Memories: 10
TTL NAND gate, Specifications, Noise margin, Propagation delay,
fan-in, fan-out, Tristate TTL, ECL, CMOS families and their
interfacing, Memory elements: RAM, ROM, Memory Decoding,
Concept of Programmable logic devices like FPGA. Logic
implementation using Programmable Devices.
MODULE 5 VLSI Design flow: Design entry: Schematic, FSM & HDL, different 6
modelling styles in VHDL, Data types and objects, Dataflow,
Behavioural and Structural Modelling, Synthesis and Simulation
VHDL constructs and codes for combinational and sequential
circuits.

1. The need of modulation, modulation processes and different analog modulation schemes.
2. The influence of noise over analog and digital modulation schemes through random
process and noise theory
3. Applications of analog and digital communication techniques.

MODULE 1 Review of signals and systems, Frequency domain representation of 8
signals, Principles of Amplitude Modulation Systems- DSB, SSB and
VSB modulations. Angle Modulation, Representation of FM and PM
signals, Spectral characteristics of angle modulated signals.

MODULE 2 Review of probability and random process. Gaussian and white noise 8
characteristics, Noise in amplitude modulation systems, Noise in
Frequency modulation systems. Pre-emphasis and Deemphasis,
Threshold effect in angle modulation.

MODULE 3 Sampling Theorem, Low Pass Signal, Band Pass Signal, Signal 8
Reconstruction, Practical Difficulties, The Treachery of Aliasing, The
Anti-aliasing Filter, Application of Sampling Theorem, PAM, PWM

COURSE OBJECTIVE:
1. To understand the basic concept of filter design and its application.
2. To impart in-depth knowledge about multivibrators.

MODULE 1 Review of Selected Topics in Electronic Circuits, Active Filters: First 8


& Second order low pass/high pass, band pass, band reject, and all pass
filters. Universal active filter design, Comparators, Sawtooth wave
generator using OP Amps, Waveform Conversion, Instrumentation
Amplifier.
MODULE 2 Wideband amplifiers: Frequency response, Transient response of 8
transistor stage, shunt compensation of a transistor stage in cascade,
Rise time of cascaded compensated stages, low frequency
compensation. Tuned Amplifiers: Single tuned, Double tuned,
Staggered tuned.
MODULE 3 Bistable Multivibrator: Stable States of a binary, Fixed Biased and 8
Self-biased Transistor binary, Commutating Capacitors, Symmetrical
and Unsymmetrical triggering, Direct connected binary, Schmitt
trigger Circuit, Emitter coupled Binary. The Monostable Multivibrator:
Collector coupled Monostable Multi, Waveforms, Emitter-coupled

COURSE OBJECTIVE:
1. To acquire the knowledge of Electromagnetic field theory that allows the student to have a solid
theoretical foundation so that in future propagation and reception of electro- magnetic waves and
nature of different type of transmission lines can be realized.
2. To identify, formulate and solve fields and electromagnetic waves propagation problems in a
multidisciplinary frame individually or as a member of a group.
3. To provide the students with a solid foundation in engineering fundamentals required to solve
problems and also to pursue higher studies.

MODULE 1 Vector calculus – orthogonal Coordinate System, Transformations of 5
coordinate systems; Gradient, Divergence, Curl – their physical
interpretations; Laplacian operator, Divergence Theorem, Stokes
Theorem. Useful vector identities.
MODULE 2 Coulomb’s law, electric field intensity, Field due to a line charge, 7
Sheet charge and continuous volume charge distribution; Gauss’ law,
Application of Gauss’s law, flux density, Potential and Potential
gradient, Divergence theorem, Current Densities, Conductors,
Poisson’s & Laplace’s equations. Uniqueness theorem, Biot-Savart’s
law, Ampere’s law, Vector magnetic Potential.
