Silhouette
• Silhouette in Fashion Design means that outline of
clothing or garment and refers to the line of dress.
Types of Silhouettes
Sheath silhouettes\
silhouette looks best on the women with no to few curves
and is generally recommended by slimmer women with well-
defined waist silhouette which hugs the body from top to
bottom. This.
Types of Silhouettes
A-line silhouette
The silhouette resembles the capital A which is fitted at top and flares at
the skirt. This garment flatters mostly every body type. Garment of this
type is narrow at the top and gradually widens towards the hem
smoothing out the lines. It best fits every body type.
Types of Silhouettes
Hour-glass silhouette
Hourglass Silhouette means fitted at the waist. These silhouettes can be
designed using belts, darts, waistbands. This type of silhouette best fits
the people with narrow waistlines and is used to emphasize the curves
of the body.

This silhouette would best suit the pear shaped body rather than the apple
shaped body provided it has a narrow waistline.
Types of Silhouettes
Empire silhouette
The silhouette with raised waistline. It is fitted top garment and flares
under the chest. It is best suited with people not having defined waist. It
should be avoided by hourglass and can be worn by both pear and apple
figures.
Types of Silhouettes
Trumpet silhouette
Silhouette also called Mermaid silhouette. This silhouette hugs the body
up to knee level and then forms the shape like bell shaped skirt. It is
used to accentuate the curve and best suits most shapes, but incredibly
petite women should be cautious about proportion because this style
emphasizes leg and torso length.
Types of Silhouettes
Asymmetrical silhouette
The silhouette is cut in diagonal direction and generally has a diagonal
hemline. Asymmetrical dress is made for every body type.
Embellishment
 Embellishment or ornamentation or decoration is
anything that enhances the appearance of
garments or fashion accessories and add more
value in terms of money that are normally added or
attached to fabrics without actually having any
functional purpose.
print
• Printing is the process of applying colour to fabric in
definite patterns or designs.
Floral Prints
• This print has flowers all around as the name suggests.
• It is the arrangement of using plant material and flowers to
create an eye catching composition.
Polka Dot Print
• Polka dot is a pattern consisting of round dot/circles
regularly distributed on surface.
• This design can be in various styles and colors.
Animal Print
• This print has various skin patterns of different animals like leopard,
snake, crocodile, zebra and many other animals.
Camouflage Print
• This is a print pattern which blends in with the surrounding.
• It is mostly used by military personnel so that they can’t be
spotted by enemies.
• Black, tan, brown, khaki colors are used mostly.
Motif
• The term motif refers to any element in a design. It
typically applies to a repeated element, but we’ll
use the term for non repeated elements as well.
Textile design involves only three broad categories
of motifs:
. Geometric
. Floral
. Novelty
1. Geometric
• Include polka dots, stripes, plaids, checks and diamonds.
They can be simple or complex, regimented or random,
straight or curvy, or somewhere in between. Geometric
prints are the most versatile and universal of prints.
2. Floral
• Floral patterns and prints are a great part of every design
tradition. They are feminine, beautiful and classic and they
have a universal appeal.
3. Novelty prints
• Novelty prints include everything else that doesn't fall into
these two categories. They have a special language, visually
and as an emblem of identity for the one that wears them.
Repeat Types
• In typical pattern designs, motifs must be arranged
into repeating units to be printed continuously and
seamlessly on a length of cloth. Here, are different
types of repeats; square, half-drop, brick & and
others.

Square Repeat Half-drop Repeat Brick Repeat

1.Square Repeat
• Square repeat also known as block, side or straight repeat
are the simplest type. The motifs are built within or
overlapping a foundational rectangle and that rectangle is
repeated as a simple grid.
2.Half-drop Repeat
• Half-drop repeat involves alternating columns of the
square repeat grid and pushes them down a fraction of
the block height (1/4, 1/2,1/3) and creating a drop. This
design creates a pleasant flow and balance when looking
at it.
3.Brick Repeat
• Brick repeat has the same concept as drops but affects
pattern rows instead of columns.

Random and Set Layouts
• Motifs can be laid out so they look randomly scattered on
the fabric or so they appear set in a some kind of
arranged pattern.
Random layouts
• make the repeat not obvious. When the eye flows over
the cloth, the viewer should have to work a bit to find
where the design begins to repeat.
Set layouts
• Set layouts are repeating pattern layouts in which motifs
are repeated in exact measured spaces. They are even
and symmetrical. There may be slight variations in color,
line weight, or other elements, but these layouts are
evenly spaced and balanced.
