Electrical Distribution in Building PDF

The document outlines the components of an electrical distribution system in buildings, including generators, substations, transformers, feeder pillars, busbars, distribution lines, and meter rooms. It describes the functions of each component and highlights the role of various utility companies in managing substations in Mumbai. Additionally, it provides information on different types of cables used in electrical wiring, such as solid wire, coaxial cable, non-metallic sheathed cable, fiber optics, and twisted pair cables.

COMPONENTS OF ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM
Generator
01 Convert mechanical energy into electrical
energy using turbines .

02 Sub Station
Step down high-voltage electricity from the
transmission system to lower voltages
suitable for distribution.

03 Transformer
Further step down the voltage to
levels used by end consumers.

Feeder Pillar
04 Distribute electricity to various circuits within
a building or facility.
05 Busbars
Distribute power to multiple circuits.

Distribution Lines
06 These are the physical cables that carry
electricity from substations to consumers.

Distribution

07 Transformers
These transformers are located closer to the
end users and reduce the voltage to a usable
level for homes and businesses.

Meter Room
08 Meters measure electricity usage for billing,
and control equipment ensures reliable and
stable delivery of power.
SUB STATION
Mumbai has several utility companies that
manage and operate substations like-
Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and
Transport (BEST)
Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited
(AEML)
Tata Power Company Limited
Maharashtra State Electricity
Distribution Company Limited
(MSEDCL)
SUB STATION
A traction substation, traction current
converter plant, rectifier station or traction
power substation (TPSS) is an electrical
substation that converts electric power
from the form provided by the electrical
power industry for public utility service to
an appropriate voltage, current type.
TRANSFORMER

A distribution transformer is an electrical device that steps down the high voltage from the
power distribution network to a lower voltage suitable for use in homes, businesses, and
other facilities.
FEEDER PILLAR

A feeder pillar is an electrical enclosure

used to protect and distribute power
from a source, such as a generator or
transformer, to a number of electrical
circuits.
BUS BAR

A busbar is a conductive metal strip or bar that serves as a central point for distributing electrical
power within switchboards, distribution boards, substations, and other electrical systems,
facilitating efficient and organized connections between incoming and outgoing circuits.
METER ROOM

A meter room is a designated area in a building where electrical meters are installed to
measure and monitor the consumption of electricity for billing and management
purposes.ity where electric meters and associated equipment are installed.

Solid Wire
A solid wire is the type of conductor wire that uses only one solid copper (or any other metal)
wire per conductor. They provide a perfect connection and termination, have a higher
ampacity, reduce noise, are anti-corrosive, and are ideal for long-distance applications with
low voltage drop. They are also less expensive than stranded wires.

Coaxial Cable
A solid wire is the type of conductor wire that uses only one solid copper (or any
other metal) wire per conductor. Coaxial cable is a type of electrical cable
commonly used for transmitting high-frequency signals. It consists of a central
conductor, an insulating layer, a metal shield, and an outer insulating layer

Non metallic Sheated Cable

Non metallic cable is usually three or more individual conductors. Those conductors are
wrapped in a flexible plastic jacket also known as sheathing. In one NM cable, you’ll usually find
a hot wire, a ground wire, and a neutral wire.NM is used for dry, interior home electrical wiring.
Fibre Optics Cable
A fiber optic cable is a network cable that contains strands of glass fibers inside an
insulated casing. They're designed for long-distance, high-performance data
networking, and telecommunications.

Twisted Pair Cables

A twisted-pair cable simply refers to a cable in which pairs -- one or more -- of

insulated strands of copper wire are twisted around one another. In the pair, one
wire is used to transmit data, and the other is the ground reference.

Main Feeder Wires

Main power feeder wire are the wire that connect the service weather head to the house.
They are made with standard or solid THHN (T- thermoplastic insulation, HHhigh heat
resistance, X- synthesis polymer that is flame resistance) wire and cable install in 25%
more than load required.
