Project Fall24

The document outlines a heat exchanger design project for CHBI 305, due on January 14, 2025. Students are required to calculate various parameters related to the heat exchanger design both manually and using ASPEN HYSYS, including mass flow rates, heat duty, and overall heat transfer coefficients. Additionally, students must compare their manual calculations with the results obtained from the software.

As process engineers, you and your groupmates are working on the design of a heat exchanger.
Your company is in Izmir/Aliağa OSB (Organize Sanayi Bölgesi). Suppose that there are only two
utility streams available in this area with the properties given below in the table.

Inlet temperature Outlet temperature

Utility stream
Ti (℃) To (℃)
Hot water 70 50
Cold water 30 40

Your manager wants you to design a one shell two tube passes heat exchanger to heat/cool your
process stream. During this design process, assume that all streams are in atmospheric pressure
and your utility stream should always be on the shell side.

1. You are expected to calculate the following parameters by hand.

• Mass flow rate of utility stream (water) (kg/h)
• Heat Duty (kJ/h)
• Heat transfer area times overall heat transfer coefficient, UA. (kJ/hK)
• LMTD (⁰C)

2. Find the above parameters using ASPEN HYSYS with the thermodynamic model Peng-
Robinson except UA. In addition to these parameters, you are expected to find the
following parameters by using ASPEN HYSYS.
• Overall heat transfer coefficient, U (kJ/hm2K)
• Heat Transfer Area (m2)
• Shell diameter (mm)
• Tube side dimensions:
Tube OD (mm)
Tube ID (mm)
Tube thickness (mm)
Tube length (m)
• Plot Heat Flow-Temperature graph for both streams

3. Discuss and compare the results that you have calculated by hand and obtained from
ASPEN HYSYS.
