PRPC-324-PLATE2

This document outlines the midterm coverage for the Principles of Reinforced and Pre-stressed Concrete course at Don Honorio Ventura State University. It includes three problems related to the analysis of concrete beams, requiring calculations of safe service loads, moment capacities, and compression block depths based on given parameters. Students are instructed to provide complete solutions with specific formatting requirements for their answers.

GENERAL DIRECTION:
Read each direction very carefully. Ignorance of the law excuses no one from complying thereof. COMPLETE SOLUTIONS are
necessary. Box your final answers. Failure to do so may receive point deductions. Use a minimum of 5 decimal in your solution and
answer.
Problem 1:

Given the following beam properties. What is the safe service uniform live load that the cantilever beam could provide if the
service uniform dead load is 36.0736 kN/m (excluding its own weight)?

f’c = 24 MPa Unit Weight of Concrete = 24 kN/m3

fy = 375 MPa clear concrete cover = 40 mm
Tension steel reinforcements: clear layer distance = 25 mm
Outer layer = 3-28mm∅ beam width = 300 mm
Inner layer = 2-25mm∅ total depth = 600 mm

Problem 2:
A concrete beam, 350mm wide by 400mm deep is simply supported on a span of 5 meter. The beam is
reinforced with 4-28mm diameter bars in tension and 2-28mm diameter bars in compression. Use NSCP 2015
Given:
Concrete, f’c = 20.7 MPa
Steel, fy= 415 MPa
Structural cover= 70mm

a. Determine the depth of compression block.

b. Determine the ultimate moment of the beam.
c. Determine the service concentrated live load located at the midspan of the beam if it has a service uniform
dead load of 20 kN/m including its own weight.

Problem 3:
A 10 meter simply supported beam is provided by an additional support at mid-span. The beam has a width of
300mm and a total depth of 450mm. It is reinforced with 4-25mm diameter bars at tension side and 2-24mm diameter bars
at the compression side with 70mm cover to centroid of reinforcements. F’c = 32MPa, fy=415MPa. Use maximum steel ratio
of 0.023. Use NSCP 2015.
a. Determine the depth of rectangular compression block.
b. Determine the nominal moment of the beam
c. Determine the total factored uniform load including the beam weight.
