2.1. Car (Single occupancy)

45% of the survey participants reported that they use cars to commute. Cars offer convenience to
users. Car users can plan their journey, start times, speed etc. These luxuries are not available if one
uses public transport. Cars also offer unparalleled comfort, security and storage.

an option because it takes too long to reach their destination. Furthermore, the unpredictable
weather In Singapore does not encourage one to walk long distances. In addition, one has to be
physically fit to walk long distances. As such, walking is the least popular option for commuting.

The following recommendations are for Department of Transportation (DOT):

4.1 Improve quality of public transport

DOT can improve the quality of public transport to encourage more working adults to use this form
of commuting. This can be done by:

- increasing the frequency of bus and train services especially during peak periods

- increase operational hours of public transport from 12 midnight to 2 am to cater to those working
late hours.

- install more comfortable seating on trains

- training bus captains and trains operators to be more customer friendly.

4.2 Reduce fares

DOT can reduce fares of public transport and consider providing vouchers and other incentive s to
encourage more people to take buses and trains. They could also organize contests and give freebies
to promote public transportation.
