Unit II Worksheet

The document contains a worksheet focused on probability distributions, specifically addressing various problems involving Poisson and normal distributions. It includes calculations for accident probabilities, family compositions, student performance in mathematics, bulb lifespans, and phone call frequencies. Additionally, it explores the likelihood of vehicle origins and computer breakdowns using statistical methods.

Unit-II(Probability Distributions)

Worksheet

1. In a town, 10 accidents took place in a span of 50 days. Assuming that the number of
accidents per day follows the Poisson distribution, find the probability that there will be
three or more accidents in a day.
2. Out of 800 families with 5 children each, how many would you expect to have a) 3 boys
b) 5 girls c) either 2 or 3 boys d) at least one boy. Assume equal probabilities for boys and
girls. The average number of phone calls/minute coming into a switch board between 2
p.m and 4 p.m is 2.5. Determine the probability that during one particular minute there will
be (i).4 or fewer (ii). More than 6 calls.
3. Assume that 50% of all engineering students are good in mathematics. Determine the
probabilities that among 18 engineering students. (i). Exactly 10 (ii).At least 10 (iii). At
most 8 (iv) At least 2 and at most 9 are good in mathematics.
4. In a test on 2000 electrical bulbs, it was found that the life of a particular make, was
normally distributed with an average life of 2040 hours and S.D of 40hrs. Estimate the
number of bulbs likely to burn for more than 2140.[hint: 12]
5. Given that the mean height of students in a class is 158 cms with standard deviation of 20
cms. Find how many students heights lie between 150 cms and 170 cms, if there are 100
students in the class.
6. Suppose the weights of 800 male students are normally distributed with mean 𝜇 = 140
pounds and standard deviation 10 pounds. Find the number of students whose weights are
(i). between 138 and 148 pounds (ii). More than 152 pounds.
7. If the mean of a poisson variable is 1.8, then find (i). p(x>1) (ii). P(x=5).
8. The average number of phone calls per minute coming into a switch board between 2pm
and 4 pm is 2.5. Determine the probability that during one particular minute there will be
(a) 4 or fewer (b) more than 6 calls (c) atmost 5.
9. Traffic control engineer reports that 75% of the vehicles passing through a checkpost are
from within state. What is the probability that fewer than 4 of the 9 are from out of the
state?
10. Number of monthly breakdowns of a computer is a random variable having poisson
distribution with men equal to 1.8. Find the probability that the computer will function for
a month (i). without a breakdown (ii). With only one breakdown and (iii). With at least one.
