1.3. Organizational structures

The structure of an organization consists of the coordination of the individuals and collective
departments within the organization to collaboratively reach a final and shared goal in the most
effective and efficient manner.

Page 6
In order for the organization in question to reach its full potential, Abyssinia bank maintains
clear and consistent balance between the organization and the people employed within the
organization, as it is through the successful interaction between these two aspects of a business
that the necessary and effective structure can be achieved and maintained. The structure of
Abyssinia bank may be very similar to a regular organization, depending on the size of the bank.
Abyssinia Bank is governed by the Board of Directors consisting of a Chairperson, a Vice
Chairperson and seven Directors. The overall management is entrusted to the management team
which comprises the Chief Executive Officer.

1.3.2 Major Experience Obtained from the Organization

➤ Even though the time given for practical attachment is so short, we have gained basic
operation of how the banking system works.

Page 7
➤ How to serve customers, and cooperation with collages and with the manager, in kindly
manner so as to increase potential customers.

➤After completing this practical attachment, we have known the basic operation of
financial system under the control of national bank of Ethiopia.

➤We have known the mechanisms to employ by the bank at a time of some difficulties
such as during a time of war, during capital deficiencies, through;

✔ Restricting cash out flow/withdrawal per day

✔ Encouraging digital banking service to overcome

The problem of high cash balance demand.

1.3.3. Major Challenges and Problems I faced

During Practical Attachment
There was less communication between the University and hosting Company Abyssinia
Bank and this lack of communication left me to deal with challenges on my own, as
there was no one from the department to intervene.
The obtained data will differ from one employee to other
 Uncooperative attitude of some employee.
 Inadequate work to do during the Attachment
Getting confused because I didn’t get enough guidelines or directions

At the time of practical attachment we faced some challenges and we have also observed some
critical challenges of the organization.

Critical challenges that we faced during attending this practical attachment includes;

➢ Shortage of time.

➢ Unwillingness of organization to accept.

Sometimes the bank was so busy to serve their customers, at that time we were not able to
get the support of the manager.

1.3.4. Problems observed that affect the organization

Page 8
At current time and its critical issues has faced some challenges relating with e- payment service.
Among the challenges Security, Standardization, Regulatory and Legal Issues, Infrastructure,
Heavy Investment Costs, and Socio-Cultural Challenges are the serious ones. And it affected the
development of the service as expected.

Suggested solutions or measures to be taken to solve or at least minimize the problems.

 Increase the awareness of society

 Building infrastructure’s

1.3.5 Significances of practical attachment the practical component of my

study has been very beneficial to me. The following are some examples of how
practical connection is relevant:

1. It allows me to combine my theoretical knowledge with practical skill development because

many operational aspects of the bank are related to the theoretical knowledge I gained from my
studies.

2. It facilitates my application of what I have learned in the classroom.

3. I can overcome the disparity between my study-related practical abilities and theoretical
knowledge through practical work

4. It improves knowledge and comprehension of matters pertinent to a certain field of study

5. It improves students' ability to conduct research

.6. It improves students' ability to handle difficulties or problems they encountered in class or
with their practical work.

7. It enhances employability skills of the students.

8. It supports the growth of students' critical thinking, decision-making, and self-esteem skills

 They are giving door to door Cash collection and payment.
 They have good team sprit.
 The branch has committed devoted, disciplined, skilled employee who respect
environmental culture, norms and language of the society.

2.2 Weakness of Abyssinia bank

In order to survive in the market and to take a competitive advantage over other competitive
banks implementing technological oriented products and services is inevitable and being late
adopter of electronic payment projects made the bank to learn from the existed experience of
banks who adopted these products earlier. Yet, being late adopter made the bank to lose the
potential market available at the first phase of entry.

-They have no SMS short code to operate customers their account.

-Their mobile banking can operated, only by internet it not functional in a place where
data connection is not available.
-There is a shortage of human resources
-The ATM machine in not good
-There is not enough electric city

2.3. Opportunities:-

 The level of income is steadily rising.

Page 10
 Population growth
 New products and Services
 Growing economy
 New Technology They can achieve their costumes base target by using governmental
employees, wereda office employee’s town administration employees, and resources.
 Having large unbanked society in rural and urban areas of the area compering with the
total population. etc.,,
 Existence of high cooperation and strong team spirit of the staff.
 Starting from the near time their banks have a good image in front of the public.
 The bank brand great costumes value, having large number of branches being influence
financial institution, and having committed staff is greater opportunity.
 They can use religious budgets like church, mosques etc...
2.4 Threats
✓Growth of other banks in the future
✓Emergence of non-commercial banks, such as industrial banks- perform the function of
advancing loans to industrial undertakings, investment banks- dedicated to financing the
new and upcoming project.
✓New banks are created, with new ideas
✓Entering of foreign banks with new ideas
✓The current situation of the country
2.5 Recommendations
The following recommendations are made for the involved organs based on the results of
the practical attachment:-

Recommendation for the bank

For the problems I encountered during my internship, I recommend the following solutions based
on my education in the university.
✓Customer service quality is a crucial source of distinctive competency and often considered as
key success factor in sustaining competitive advantage in service industries. Great attention and
effort in closing the gap is expected from this bank. And also this bank needs to develop a
strategy to target and retain the dissatisfied customers
✓There should be new and strong network system in the bank in order to reduce customer’s
anger and discomfort.

Page 11
✓There must be a good and strong rules and regulation regarding customer handling and
treating.
✓The branch need additional copy machine, printers, personal computers, money counting
machine in order to facilitate the service given by the bank and save time.
✓The bank need to reduce usage of banks resource for personal use like telephones and promote
coefficient use of resource.
✓Use different mechanism to attract investor’s and customer.as we know banks gain profit
mainly from deposit and loan.so the activity which means the attraction of customer should be
implement by different mechanisms.
✓Some customers must have a positive attitude when they came to the bank and understand the
banks procedure properly to get the service they want (must bring ID, passbook)
✓Additionally, Bank of Abyssinia should focus on building brand awareness. Retail banking
brands can stand out to modern consumers by highlighting services that help clients reach their
goals. So when a potential client decides to open an account, this brand should always come to
mind.
Recommendation to Debre Marko’s university internship program
The university must communicate with the organization we applied at.
✓Debre Marko’s University should continue giving this internship program since it is very
necessary for the students to know the environment before they get hired and start working.
✓There should be enough budget for the students to conduct the internship program because
some students may not get easy access to institutions where they can conduct the internship
program so they may need transportation cost.
✓The time period for the internship program must be adequate for all departments depending on
the department courses and place of internship to make the internship more useful.
2.6 Conclusion
The attachment confirms that fostering strong relationships between universities and
employers provides significant benefits for students, universities, and society at large. Many
Ethiopian higher education institutions do not give their students opportunities for practicalattach
ment. Instead, they put more emphasis on teaching the theoretical side of things, which makes it
difficult for students to find work once their academic careers are
over.On the other hand, a lot of difficulties and issues were seen at the businesses where the prac
tical attachment took place, and being aware of these issues can help students improve their
problem-solving abilities. Conducting practical attachments is crucial
for society as awhole, for students, universities, companies, and for employers.
