Kinds of Articles
There are two different kinds of articles which are as follows:-
1. Indefinite articles
2. Definite articles
1. Indefinite Articles
‘A’ or ‘an’ are known as an indefinite articles. ‘A’ or ‘an’ points out
any particular thing or a person.
Examples:
An apple is a fruit.
A car was passing by.
An hour to go for the exam.
A pretty dress at the store.
An eagle is flying.
2. Definite article
“The” is used to point to a particular thing or a person in specific.
Uses of The:
(a) It is used before a noun that is unique.
For example:-
The Moon
The earth
The sun
The River
The sea
(b) It is used before superlatives.
For example:-
The strongest
The wealthiest
The coldest
The smallest
The longest
(c) It is used before numerical positioning.
For example:-
The first
The second
The third
The fourth
The fifth
(d) It is used before the names of hills or mountains.
For example:-
The Himalayas
The Alps
The Andes
The Western ghats
The Aravali range
(e) It is used before the names of rivers.
For example:-
The Ganga
The Yamuna
The Godavari
The Brahmaputra
The Indus
(f) It is used before the name of countries.
For example:-
The United States of America
The United Kingdom
The United Arab
The Myanmar
The Philippines
(g) It is used before the names of monuments.
