COMPUTERS
WHAT IS
COMPUTER?
ROOTS IN CALCULATION:

1613: THE FIRST RECORDED USE OF "COMPUTER" APPEARED IN RICHARD BRATHWAIT'S

BOOK "THE YONG MANS GLEANINGS," REFERRING TO A HUMAN WHO PERFORMS
CALCULATIONS:

SHIFTING MEANING:

1640S: "COMPUTER" BECAME AN AGENT NOUN, DESCRIBING SOMEONE WHO

CALCULATES, DERIVED FROM THE VERB "TO COMPUTE."
WHAT IS
COMPUTER?
FROM HUMAN TO MACHINE:

1897: THE TERM EXPANDED TO INCLUDE CALCULATING MACHINES OF

ANY TYPE.

MODERN DEFINITION:

1945: "COMPUTER" FINALLY TOOK ON ITS MODERN MEANING: A

PROGRAMMABLE ELECTRONIC DIGITAL COMPUTER.

INTERESTING TRIVIA:

THE ACRONYM ENIAC (ELECTRONIC NUMERICAL INTEGRATOR AND

COMPUTER), DESIGNED IN 1946, HELPED POPULARIZE THE ASSOCIATION
OF "COMPUTER" WITH ELECTRONIC MACHINES.
History of Computer

Charles
Babbage
Father of Modern Computers
Dec. 26, 1791 - Oct. 18, 1871

English Mathematician and

inventor who is credited with
having conceived the first
automatic digital computer.
History of Computer

Ada Lovelace
(1815-1852)

Considered the world's first

computer programmer, she
wrote algorithms for Babbage's
machines, demonstrating the
potential for programming and
logical operations.
History of Computer

Steve Jobs &

Steve Wozniak
Co-founded Apple Computer in
1976 and introduced user-friendly
personal computers like the
Apple II and Macintosh, making
computing more accessible to
the masses.
History of Computer
1. The Number System
- When there were no machines for
computing yet, people use their ten
fingers
LIFE BEFORE - The decimal system is based from this
old practice
COMPUTERS - The decimal system utilized ten digits:
zero through nine, base 10
- Computers process numbers using
binary (base-2), the octal (base-8) (0-7),
and the hexadecimal (base-16) (0-9, A-F)
number systems.
History of Computer

2. Computation Tools 3. The First Place-Value

(30000 BC - 20000 BC Number System (1900 BC)
- Humans needed to count - The first known place-value
more items, so they started number system is the Babylonian’s
SEXAGESIMAL SYSTEM ( base-60).
using other tools for
computation like small
- Used in measuring time (60
stones or pebbles, bones seconds, 60 minutes) and in dividing
with scratches to circles (360 degrees)
represent numbers.
History of Computer

4. The Invention of the Abacus (1000 BC – 500 BC)

- ABACUS is the first actual
calculating machine, invented by the
Babylonians between 1000 BC and
500 BC, others say it was invented by
the Chinese around 1300 AD

- Not considered a mechanical

calculator, but it is one of the first
mechanical aids
History of Computer

5. Snail mail
- The primary mode of long-distance
communication was through handwritten
letters, taking days or even weeks to arrive

6. Libraries and encyclopedias

- Knowledge was gleaned from
physical books and encyclopedias,
requiring trips to libraries and
laborious searches through countless
volumes.
History of Computer

7. Typewriters and handwritten documents

- Documents were created using typewriters or handwritten,

demanding accuracy and patience with revisions.

JOURNEY The Dawn of the Electronic Age (1940s-

1960s)
THROUGH TIME The Rise of Personal Computing (1970s-
OF COMPUTERS 1990s)

The Age of the Internet and Beyond

(2000s-Present)
Early Beginnings

Used a tree figure (like a family

tree) to represent the relationships
between (and subdivisions of)
things such as species. The
diagram is known as the Tree of
Porphyry – a classic device for
illustrating a “scale of being”
ARISTOTLE AND THE
TREE OF PORPHYRY
(383 BC – 322 BC)
Early Beginnings

Napier’s Bones was used in the

multiplication and division of large
numbers

JOHN NAPIER’S BONES

(1600 AD)
Early Beginnings

The Calculating Clock used wheels

to carry out addition and
subtraction of numbers up to 6
digits

WILHELM SCHICKARD’S
CALCULATING CLOCK
(1625 AD)
Early Beginnings

The Pascaline is mechanical adding

machine performed up to 8-digits
calculations, it was the first
mechanical calculator.

BLAISE PASCAL’S
ARITHMETIC MACHINE
(1640 AD)
Early Beginnings

The Loom is a weaving device that

could produce intricate designs.
The automatic loom was controlled
by punched cards, a technology for
storing data that was used in later
computers.

JOSEPH-MARIE
JACQUARD’S LOOM
(1804)
Early Beginnings

The Stepped Reckoner can perform

all four basic arithmetic operations,
it could multiply numbers up to 5
and 12 digits to give a 16-digit
operand.

GOTTFRIED WILHELM
VON LEIBNIZ’S STEPPED
RECKONER (1671)
Early Beginnings

The Father of Modern Computers,

invented 2 machines: the DIFFERENCE
ENGINE (1822) and ANALYTICAL ENGINE
(1833).
The Difference Engine performed
multiplication and division.
The Analytical Engine had similarities
with the modern electronic digital
computers. It had a mill and a store which
CHARLES BABBAGE’S corresponded to the current processor and
MACHINES (1822)
memory. It used punch cards to print results
and to serve as memory.
Early Beginnings

Developed by LADY AUGUSTA ADA

LOVELACE, used only two numbers, 0 and 1,
for computation. She was considered the
first programmer.

BINARY ARITHMETIC
(1840)
Early Beginnings

Developed the Tabulating Machine that

used cards wherein data was punched.
Hollerith founded the Tabulating Machine
Company which later became IBM
(International Business Machines
Corporation)

HERMAN HOLLERITH’S
TABULATING MACHINE
(1890)
The Dawn of the Electronic Age (1940s-1960s)

1943: The ENIAC (Electronic Numerical

Integrator and Computer), a room-sized
behemoth using vacuum tubes, becomes
the first general-purpose electronic
computer. This marks the birth of the
modern computer era.

THE ENIAC (ELECTRONIC

NUMERICAL
INTEGRATOR AND

Computer), the first commercially available
computer, revolutionizes business and
government operations.

miniaturizes computing power, paving the
way for smaller and more affordable
computers.

THE TRANSISTOR
The Rise of Personal Computing (1970s-1990s)

1976: Apple Computer is founded by Steve

Jobs and Steve Wozniak, and they
introduce the Apple I and later the Apple II,
popularizing user-friendly interfaces and
graphics.

APPLE COMPUTER
The Rise of Personal Computing (1970s-1990s)

providing a graphical user interface (GUI)
that makes PCs more accessible to the
average user.

MICROSOFT
WINDOWS 1.0
The Rise of Personal Computing (1970s-1990s)

1991: The World Wide Web is launched,

connecting computers globally and
transforming communication, information
access, and commerce.
