32kW Radiographic Mobile 02 - Installation

1 PRELIMINARY INFORMATION
This manual describes the unpacking operations of the equipment in its most complete version.

This equipment has been manufactured and checked in factory by following production and testing methods
which are in compliance with the most recent International Standards and with the Medical Devices Directive
93/42 EC and its revised versions.
During the testing, a Test Report including the following information:
Accuracy test of radiological data (kV - mA - ms)
Compliance test of light field- x-ray field
Electrical accuracy test (PE resistance and leaked currents)
has been filled out with the results of the obtained measures.
In order to ensure that during the transport from factory to user the equipment has not been damaged and it is
still efficient, functional tests and checks must be performed during the installation phase of the equipment.
To check the output data, it is necessary a non-invasive tool to measure kV and exposure time. Without this
tool, it is possible to check the data directly on the equipment display.

If specific acceptance checks are required by the hospital or Government regulations, perform first all checks
described in this chapter.

32kW Radiographic Mobile 03 - Replacements

1 PREFACE
Short circuits or damages to electronical systems.
Penetration of extraneous bodies inside the equipment.
► Don't let fall washers and screws or extraneous bodies inside the equipment.
► After technical interventions and before reassembling the covers clean properly inside the
equipment.

This chapter describes the necessary procedures for:

· the covers removal.
· the replacement of electric and electronic parts
· the replacement of mechanical parts
· and the following reassembly phase of the equipment.

When a connector is detached from its own board, make sure that it is properly identified, otherwise, put a
temporary label with the description of the board and connector (for example “B2-CM15”).
When a mechanical or electrical component has been replaced, perform the working tests of the equipment as
described in the chapter “Installation”.
The equipment satisfies the electrical safety standards and the EMC standards and, in normal conditions, there
is no risk of failure caused by electromagnetic interferences. For this reason, when replacing a board or
working inside the equipment, at the end of the intervention, it is necessary to restore all the electrical safety
devices (ground connections, cables shields, inductances,...) eventually removed.
During normal use or service interventions, painted parts can be damaged. In order to touch up small parts, a
paint kit for touch-up is delivered with the equipment. It consists of three paint pots and three brushes.
Use only original paints included in the touch-up paint kit
In case, the touch-up paint kit is available also as spare part.

Warning: Observe precautions for handling.

Electrostatic sensitive devices.
ESD can damage disk drives, cards, memory modules and other parts. We recommend you to do
all procedures in this guide only at an ESD workstation. If one is not available, provide some
ESD protection by wearing an antistatic wrist strap attached to any unpainted metal surface when
handling parts. If you don't have one, discharge static electricity from yourself and your clothing
by touching a nearby metal surface before handling any internal components.

Here below the operations for the components and accessories replacement that compose the
most complete version of the equipment.

1 ELECTRICAL ADJUSTMENTS
The most important electrical calibrations are performed through the SERVICE MODE, in this
way it is possible to intervene on the operating parameters with the unit closed, by reducing at
minimum the risks and intervention times.
The adjustments that require the cover removal are performed in factory during the equipment
testing and they usually don't need additional adjustments.

1.1 X-ray tube calibration

Perform the operations described in:

2 COLLIMATOR ADJUSTMENTS
2.1 Light/x-ray field correspondence
Radiation risk for the operating personnel
Presence of operators in non-protected areas
► The operating personnel must be protected from x-rays through a protection screen or similar
protective measures during x-rays emission.

The light/x-ray correspondence is adjusted by the factory and it does not require any further adjustments.
If you would like to check the correspondence, follow these instructions.
Place a cassette 35x43 cm (14x17") at 1 meter distance far from the x-ray source, so that the x-ray beam is
perpendicular to it.
Don't use the collimator indicators as reference, but measure the real distance from the focal spot to the
cassette surface by using the collimator tape measure.
Use the collimator light to center the cassette in the x-ray field .

Mark the cassette position with adhesive tape or other

means, so that it can be removed and placed again in
the same position.
Put a white paper sheet on the cassette in order to get
the max.contrast for the light field.
Open the collimator shutters in order to get a field
35x35 cm at a distance of 1 m.
Activate the light field and use it to place 17 washers as
shown in Fig.
Place each couple of washers so that they touch each
other. The washer inside the luminous field should be
lit as much as possible, whilst the one outside should be
lit as little as possible.
The points of tangency define the sides of the light
field. The last washer will be placed in a corner and it
will be used to orientate the film.

Light/x-ray field alignement

Set the unit to produce a x-ray beam of about 50 kVp, 5 mAs.

Perform an exposure - remove the cassette and develop the film.
Use the test film to check the alignments described below:

3 MECHANICAL ADJUSTMENTS
3.1 Arm balancing clutch
The following adjustment must be performed with column in central position and brakes ON. Put the
equipment in a flat place suitable for the purpose.

The perfect compensation of the weight with the arm in horizontal position has to be obtained.
The arm balancing spring is accessible from the bottom of the central column and its adjustment has to be
done through a fixed screw Ø 19mm. In order to do it, it is necessary to move the arm completely UP to enter
easily in the spring tie rod.
It is necessary to adjust the spring so that a necessary force of 55 ±15N is obtained.
The procedure is the following:
The clutch is necessary to compensate and make the arm spring pull constant and so the monobloc arm
balanced in the whole run.
In general, in fact, the weight compensation is performed with the arm in horizontal position and with this
clutch completely excluded. Then the clutch is closed till the tube arm keeps the position also at the run
extremities (in proximity of the UP and DOWN limit positions) and the movement results flowing and
regular.
1. By using a small screwdriver, making lever on the
edge, remove the cap that covers the clutch.

2. Use the clutch adjustment wrench (see the chapt.

“Service Information”) and rotate the metal ring:
• counterclockwise to unloose the clutch.
• clockwise to tighten the clutch.

3. After the adjustment put again the fixing bush and

reassemble the handle.

32kW Radiographic Mobile 04 - Adjustments

3.2 Arm balancing

The arm balancing spring is accessible from the bottom
of the central column and its adjustment has to be done
through a fixed wrench ø19mm.

1. Unloose completely the arm balancing clutch

2. Move the arm completely UP.
The hexagonal stay nut for the adjustment becomes
accessible from the bottom of the central column.

3. By using the fixed wrench (Ø19mm) rotate the stay

nut:
• counterclockwise to increase the balancing
compensation (if the arm tends to go down)
• clockwise to decrease it (if the arm tends to go UP)

Page 8/11 [File: 213019-00-01.docx]

04 - Adjustments 32kW Radiographic Mobile

3.3 Monobloc clutch

The clutch on the inclination movement of the monobloc must be adjusted in order to have a smooth
movement and to keep the monobloc in the intended position.

1. Loosen the 3 grub screws (A) and remove the

goniometer (B).

2. Use the adjustment wrench of the clutch and rotate

the metal ring.
•counterclockwise to loosen the clutch.
•clockwise to tighten the clutch.

3. When the adjustment has been performed,

reassemble the goniometer.

32kW Radiographic Mobile 04 - Adjustments

3.4 Parking brake

The equipment has a parking brake at two positions:
position 1 brake OFF: the equipment is free to move
position 2 brake ON:the equipment is braked.

The parking brake can be activated by the two pedals at

the equipment sides.

1. Put the pedal in position 1 (brake OFF).

2. Push with both hands the equipment.
The movement must result unbraked and the
movement straight.

3. Put the lever in position 2 (brake ON).

4. Pull with both hands the equipment.
The equipment has not to move.

If the equipment tends to move in straight way, both

brakes must be adjusted, while if the equipment tends
to rotate around itself the brake opposite to the
equipment direction must be adjusted (for example if
the equipment tends to rotate clockwise, the left brake
must be adjusted).
1. Put the pedal in position 1 (brake OFF).
2. Remove the brake mechanism cover (B), by
removing the two cross screws TC M4x10 (A) and
nylon washer ø4.

3. Put the brake lever in position 1 (brake OFF).

Check that the distance between the brake pad and the
wheel is 2mm (0,08in) ±0,5 (0,02in) (A).
On the contrary unloose the two screws M6x16 (B) and
move close or move away the mechanism till the
wished measure is reached.
4. Unloose the lock nut (C) and adjust the nut (D) till
the distance between the pad and the brake pull
mechanism of 2mm±0,5 (E) is reached.
5. Close the lock nut and check the movement.
6. Reassemble the cover

Mnemonic Signal description Percorso
MAIN SUPPLY Mains voltage 115V ±10% or 230V ±10% 50/60Hz. Plug → Filter →
It is connected to the ac/dc S1 power supply and B3 → B4
through the relay B3-K1 to the Power Unit. The
presence of the mains voltage is indicated by the
green led B3-Ld1.
+V1 The power supply +V1 (13Vdc) is generated by the S1 → B3 →
power supply S1 and it is always present also with Collimator
the equipment OFF. It supplies the insertion circuit,
the collimator and the power supply dc/dc S2. If the
voltage is present, the green led on the keyboard near
the ON key is ON. This voltage refers to GND.
+12V1 The voltage +V1 supplies the transistor B3-Q1-E; by S1 → B3
switching ON the equipment the transistor Q1-C
tranfers the voltage +12V1= (+V1- Vcesat) to the
starter control circuits. Then this voltage supplies the
Handswitch and the optional accessory “Radio
frequency Handswitch”.
±15V2 The power supply V2 (±15Vdc) is generated by the S2 → B2
power supply S2 and it is present with the switching-
ON of the equipment. This voltage supplies the
Hardware Safety circuits and if there are not fault
situations, through the relay B2-K2 are supplied the
control circuits of the Filament, Inverter and some
in/out circuits on MPB.

6.4 Hardware safety

Mnemonic Signal description Path
V2 OK High active signal. In case there is an unbalance B2
between pos. and neg. of the V2 the signal is missing,
the red led B2-Ld2 switches ON and the alarm "V2
FAULT” appears on the display. For safety reasons
the relays B2-K1/K2 are deenergized and they take
away the voltage V1 to the x-ray handswitch, the
power supply ±V2 to the Inverter and the Filament
and the V3 to the charger control signals. Switch the
equipment OFF to reset the safety condition.
CPU RUNNING High active signal. If the program stops the signal is B2
missing and the red led B2-Ld4 switches ON. For
safety reasons the relays B2-K1/K2 are deenergized
and they remove the voltage V1 to the x-ray
handswitch, the power supply V2 to the Inverter
and to the Filament and the V3 to the charger control
signals. Switch the equipment OFF to reset the safety
condition.
MAX XR TIME Low active signal. It is the hardware safety that stops B2
the equipment operation in case the exposure time is
> 5,1sec (Red Led B2-Ld3 → ON). For safety
reasons the relays B2-K1/K2 are deenergized and
they take away the voltage V1 to the x-ray
handswitch, the power supply ±V2 to the Inverter and
to the Filament and the V3 to the charger control
signals. Switch the equipment OFF to reset the safety
condition.

6.5 XR control
Mnemonic Signal Description Path
HS COM Power supply +12V1 of the Handswitch. It is HS → B8 → B2
sectionated by the hardware safety circuit through the
relay B2-K2.
HS PRE Signal of "dead man" type preparation request HS → B8 → B2
(Yellow led B2-Ld18 → ON).
HS RAD Signal of "dead man" type radiation request . (Yellow HS → B8 → B2
led B2-Ld17 → ON).
THERMAL SAFETY It is active with the average temperature of the B3 → Monob →
monobloc > 57°C (Yellow led B2-Ld6 → OFF). Its B3 → B2
intervention leaves finish a possible exposure in
progress, it generates a message on the display of
“HOT TUBE” and it stops every other x-rays request
until the monobloc returns to lower temperature.

6.6 Charger
Mnemonic Signal Description Path
V3 Power supply voltage ±15V3 for the Charger control B4
circuits. The presence of the power supplies is
indicated by the green leds B4-Ld9 (+) and B4-Ld8 (-
). This voltage refers to the GND.
Vc Voltage at the capacitors battery ends (±350Vc); the B4 → Cap.Bat →
0Vc is connected to the GND. WARNING! If the B5
capacitors have not been discharged this voltage is
present also with the equipment OFF and with the
plug not inserted. The natural discharge occurs in
about 3 hours; the capacitors charge status is
indicated by the green leds B4-Ld3 (branch +) and
B4-Ld4 (branch -) that remain ON till a voltage of
35V for every branch. It is possible to discharge
instantly the battery by operating from keyboard
(SERVICE MODE→ DIAGNOSTIC menu→
CAPACITORS option) or by pressing for a moment
the red pushbutton B4-PB1. WARNING! Before
intervening on the Power Unit, check with a
Voltmeter that every capacitor is effectively

6.8 Filament
Mnemonic Signal description Path
VL Rectified and filtered mains voltage (320Vdc) to Line → B3 → B4
power the filament and its power circuits (half → B7
bridge). It is sectionated by the fuse B7-F1 of 1A.
Warning: these circuits are mains voltage. Electric
shock danger.
FIL DAC OUT Voltage generated by MPB for the filament B2 → B7
switching-ON. In st.by its value is +2V. In
preparation the value is according to the set kV and
mAs parameters and +4V can be reached.
FIL SET Control voltage of the filament switching-ON with B2 → B7
the format 1V → 100mA. Its value is determinated
by the FIL DAC OUT voltage added to 1V.
[ V FIL SET = V FIL DAC OUT + 1
FIL CUR It is a voltage proportional to the filament current B2
with the format 1V → 50mA. The max. filament
current is about 500mA.
mA SET Voltage generated by MPB included between +3,7V B2 → B7
and +7,0V. It is sent to the automatic adjustment
circuit of the anodic current as reference voltage. Its
value is according to the set kV and mAs parameters;
the correspondence is 1V → 20mA.
ANODIC mA Voltage generated by the anodic current of the tube; Monob → B11 →
the correspondence is 1V → 20mA in the range 0- B2 → B7
7V. This signal is sent to the filament as feed-back
for the mA adjustment and to the MPB for the mAs
counting and so it determinates the exposure stop.
mA STABILIZATION High active signal and generated by MPB. It enables B2 → B7
the automatic adjustment circuit of the anodic
current. For safety this signal is sectioned by the
Handswitch and it is active only during the emission.
FILAMENT READY This signal is active high (B7-Ld2 ON) if the B7 → B2
filament current is included between 300mA and
500mA. A current out of the range locks the
equipment working and the alarm “FILAMENT”
appears on the Display. In case the alarm has been
generated by a current > di 500mA the red led B7-
Ld1 is ON and it stores the intervention of the safety
of max. current. The intervention of this safety
energizes the relay B7-K1 that sections the filament
to protect it from overcurrent. Switch the equipment
OFF to reset the safety condition.
SMALL FOCUS Focus selection. If high the small focus is selected, B2 → B7
otherwise the large focus is selected

6.9 Inverter
Mnemonic Signal description Path
kV SET Voltage generated by MPB for the kV setting to the B2 → B11
x-ray tube. The format is kV/20 and the range from 2
to 6,25V
XR ENABLE High active signal for the inverter enabling (Yellow B2 → B11
led B2-Ld23 → ON). The signal is sectioned by the
Handswitch and by the hardware safety circuits.
XR ORDER High active signal of the x-ray control (Yellow Led B2 → B11

Mnemonic Signal description Path

B2-Ld2 → ON). Furthermore it triggers the timer
MAX XR TIME of hardware safety (5,1s). For safety
reasons Handswitch is sectioned and from the
hardware safety circuits. To get the emission the
inverter must be enabled.
kV>75% High active signal. It is generated by the inverter B11 → B2
when the High Voltage is higher than 75% of the set
kV value (Yellow Led B11-Ld5 → ON). This signal
enables the start to the mAs counting.
TUBE kV Voltage proportional to the High Voltage applied to B11 → B2
the tube; the correspondence is 1V → 20kV. It is sent
to MPB for the kV measure in SERVICE MODE.
KV/20 Voltage proportional to the High Voltage applied to B11
the tube; the correspondence is 1V → 20kV. This
signal is used for the electric kV measure and it is
connected to the kV adjustment circuits as
comparison voltage.
ANODIC mA Voltage genearted by the anodic tube current; the Monob → B11 →
correspondence is 1V → 20mA. This signal is sent to B2 → B7
the filament as feed-back for the mA adjustment and
to the MPB for the mAs counting and so it
determinates the exposure stop.
kV FAULT Signal of the high active fault that stops the exposure B11 → B2
(Yellow Led B11-Ld1 → ON). It is generated by the
inverter when there is an unbalancing on the High
Voltage or when the feedback is absent. Generally it
is caused by a fault in the monobloc (Tube, diodes,
coils, etc.). It generates on the display the
“INVERTER KV ERR” alarm.
OVERLOAD Signal of high active fault. It is genearted when the B11 → B2
monobloc absorbs a current with a too high value; the
inverter working is locked and then also the x-ray
emission (Red Led B11-Ld2 → ON).
It can occur when: in the monobloc a discharge of
High Voltage occurs, or for anodic mA of high value
(usually in tube calibration phase), or for a fault to
the monobloc (Tube, diodes, coils, etc.).
The ”INVERTER OVERLOAD” alarm appears on
the display.
IGBT FAULT Signal of the high active fault (Red Led B11-Ld3-4 B11 → B2
→ ON). It is generated when in the inverter IGBT
drivers there is an unsafe control or a working defect.
It generates on the display the alarm “INVERTER
FAULT”.
RESET FAULT High active signal. It is a pulse of about 20ms B2 → B11
generated by MPB at the end of the anode starting
phase. It is necessary to reset a possible inverter fault
occurred in the previous exposure (B2-Ld25 → ON).

indicates the presence of the voltage and the integrity Collimator
of the fuse B3-F6 of 10A.
LAMP REQUEST Request of collimator lamp switching-ON from B1 → B3
keyboard or Infra-Red Remote Control.
LAMP ORDER Low active signal. It triggers the timer for the lamp B3 → Collimator
switching-ON. Once the timer has been triggered, the
lamp remains ON for about 30s.

6.11 Dosimeter
The standard supply does not foresee the dosimeter insertion. During the installation phase of this optional
accessory enter the SERVICE MODE and the CONFIG menu for the activation.
Mnemonic Signal description Path
Vd Voltage of 15V for the dosimeter power supply. This S2 → B2 →
voltage generated by the power supply S2 is Collimator →
separated electrically from the others and it is not Dosimeter
referred to GND.
TEST SIGNAL Five seconds after the equipment start up the signal is B2 → Collimator
generated by MPB and sent to the dosimeter (Yellow → Dosimeter
led B2-Ld32 ON.
The pulse lasts 1s and it is high active. After the
TEST SIGNAL the dosimeter replies with some
pulses. For the correct working the response pulses
must be included between 2000 and 3000. 3 cases
can occur:
the response pulses are in the range; the display
shows on the first line ”DAP READY”.
the response pulses are out of the range; the display
shows “DAP ERROR”.
no response pulse is read; the display shows “DAP
INACTIVE”.
The message on the display is deleted after about 5
seconds, but if the first case is occurred on the first
line “cGYcm2” appears.
PULS SIGNAL With the presence of radiation, the dosimeter Dosimeter →
generates some current pulses. The quantity of these Collimator → B2
pulses is proportional to the dose that goes through
the dosimeter with the format 1 pulse 0,01cGy
cm².
The width of the pulse (that is to say when there is
current) is about 1,5µs for a max. of 250.000
pulses/second.
After a TEST SIGNAL the dosimeter answers with
some pulses. For the correct working the pulses must
be included between 2000 and 3000.
At the equipment start up till a max. of 5 seconds the
dosimeter can generate some casual pulses; these
pulses must be ignored.

3.3.3 Tube Calibration

Ionizing radiations.
The operations described below require the emission of ionizing radiations.
► Take the proper measures in order to avoid exposing any part of the body to direct or indirect
radiations.

Potential risks
Possible damages or breakages to the x-ray tube.
► Do not perform x-rays with unknown filament switching ON values.

The anodic current (mA) that checks the intensity of the radiation emitted by the tube is controlled indirectly
by the filament current.
The relationship between the filament current and the anodic current is given by the tube emission curves. As
for structure reasons the tolerance on the filament current that gives a determined anodic current is large, these
curves can be used as initial settings, but they cannot be replaced by an individual tube calibration.
Purpose of the procedure “Tube Calibration” is to adjust the anodic current values to the filament current
values, so that the data in output from the tube correspond to the data set by the operator.
If during the calibration procedure, an error intervenes or the power supply is missing, the whole calibration
procedure must be repeated integrally.
The calibration of the tube is performed in factory and it is not necessary to perform it again during the unit
installation.
It is necessary to proceed with the tube calibration, when on the equipment one or more of the following
components are replaced:
• monobloc
• inverter
• board of filament power supply
Even a possible permanent dose change, caused by an intense use of the equipment, could be compensated by
performing a new calibration.
A well-performed calibration allows the equipment to work properly and it protects the tube from overloads
by making the life longer.

3.3.4 Tube Seasoning

Ionizing radiations.
The operations described below require the emission of ionizing radiations.
► Take the proper measures in order to avoid exposing any part of the body to direct or indirect
radiations.

Perform a tube seasoning, only when it is required by the equipment.

If during the seasoning procedure some anomalies or malfunctions are found, it is necessary to
stop the procedure and wait at least 30min before restarting the procedure from the beginning.

It is possible to perform the x-ray tube seasoning without performing its calibration. The curve of
average power is used automatically by the software and there is no danger to damage the tube
with wrong data.

The application of high loads to the tube when the anode is cold can cause a premature wear of the focal track.
As emergency or practicability reasons are often predominant in the diagnostic use, it is important , in the
daily use, in case of tube use at high power, to proceed with its heating, through some preparation exposures.
If the tube is not used for a long period, it is required to proceed with the tube seasoning.
The x-ray tube that is not used for at least 8 hours can be subject to thermal shock if high mA and high kV are
used, without performing first a heating phase of the tube.
The procedure of tube seasoning is divided into three subprograms:
- WARM (heating cycle)
- KV UP (kV raise cycle)
- SEAS (tube seasoning cycle).

It is possible to perform the three programs independently one from the other.

Perform a cycle of heating and kV raise (WARM and KV UP)

• when an equipment is not used for a period longer than a month.

radiations.

This test allows to monitor the trend of the kV, the

anodic current and the filament current during an
exposure.
The test performs 10 samplings (10ms among every
sampling) from the moment decided by the operator
and it supplies the information on the high voltage and
on the currents to the tube.

sssss Status of the unit, it can have the following values “READY”, “BUSY”, no signal.
vvv Voltage measured at the ends of the capacitors battery.
kkk The voltage set between anode and cathode (that can be modified with the pushbuttons kV+ and
kV-).
