Date : 30-01-2025 STD 9 Maths Total Marks : 25

Time : 45 Minute Surface Area & Volume

* Answer the following questions in one sentence. [1 Marks Each] [3]

1. A hemi spherical bowl has a radius of 3.5 cm. What would be the volume of
water it would contain?

Ans. : The volume of water the bowl contain = 2

3
3
πr

Radius = 3.5cm
Then volume = 2 22 3
× × (3.5)
3 7

2 22
= × × 3.5 × 3.5 × 3.5
3 7

2 22 35 35 35
= × × × ×
3 7 10 10 10

3
= 89.8cm

2. Find the surface area of a sphere of diameter:

3.5cm
Ans. : Given Diameter = 3.5cm
Radius = Diameter

3.5
= = 1.75cm
2

Surface area 4πr

2

22 2
= 4× × (1.75)
7

2
= 38.5cm

3. Find the volume of a sphere whose radius is:

10.5cm.
Ans. : Radius (r) = 10.5cm
Therefore volume =
4
3
3πr

4 22 3 2
= × × (10.5) = 4851cm
3 7

* Answer the following short questions. [2 Marks Each] [8]

4. The height of a cone is 16 cm and its base radius is 12 cm. Find the curved
surface area and the total surface area of the cone (Use π = 3.14).
Ans. : We are given that,
Here, h = 16 cm and r = 12 cm.
So, from l2 = h2 + r2,we have

Page 1
−−−−−−−−
l = √16 + 12 cm = 20cm
2 2

So, curved surface area = πrl

= 3.14 × 12 × 20 cm2 = 753.6 cm2

Further, total surface area = 2
πrl + πr

= (753.6 + 3.14 × 12 × 12) cm2

= (753.6 + 452.16) cm2
= 1205.76 cm2
5. The volume of a right circular cone is 9856cm3. If the diameter of the base is

28cm, Find:
Curved surface area of the cone.
Ans. : Radius of the cone (r) = 14cm
Slant height of the cone (l) = 50cm
Curved surface area (C.S.A) = ?
Curved surface area of a cone (C.S.A) = πrl
2
= 3.14 × 14 × 50 = 2200cm

Therefore curved surface of the cone is 2200cm2 .

6. A right circular cone is 3.6cm high and the radius of its base is 1.6cm. It is
melted and recast into a right circular cone having base radius 1.2cm. Find its
height.

Ans. : Here, height of cone = 3.6cm and radius = 1.6cm

After melting, its radius = 1.2cm
Volume of original cone = Volume of cone after melting
1
∴ π × 1.6 × 1.6 × 3.6
3

1
= π × 1.2 × 1.2 × h
3

1
π×1.6×1.6×3.6
3
⇒ h = 1
= 6.4cm
π×1.2×1.2
3

∴ height of new cone = 6.4cm.

7. The outer diameter of a spherical shell is 12cm and its inner diameter is 8cm.
Find the volume of metal contained in the shell. Also, find its outer surface
area. (Take π =
22

7
).

Ans. : Outer radius of the spherical shell = 6cm

Inner radius of the spherical shell = 4cm
Volume of metal contained in the shell = 4

Page 2
∴ Outer surface area = 4×

= 452.57cm

* Answer the following questions. [3 Marks Each] [9]

8. A Joker's cap is in the form of a right circular cone of base radius 7 cm and
height 24 cm. Find the area of the sheet required to make 10 such caps.
Ans. : Radius of cap (r) = 7 cm, Height of cap (h) = 24 cm
−−−− −− −−−−−−−−−−
Slant height of the cone (l) = √r2 + h2 = √(7)
2
+ (24)
2

−−−−− −−
= √49 + 576

−−−
= √625
= 25 cm
Area of sheet required to make a cap = CSA of cone = rl
πrl π

= 22

7
× 7 × 25

= 550 cm
2
=550 cm2
∴ Area of sheet required to make 10 caps =10 × 550 = 5500 cm2
9. A metallic sphere of radius 10.5cm is melted and then recast into smaller
cones, each of radius 3.5cm and height 3cm. How many cones are obtained?
Ans. : Radius of the metallic sphere, r1 = 10.5cm
Volume of the sphere =
4

3
3
πr

4 3 3
= π(10.5) cm
3

Radius of each smaller cone, r2 = 3.05cm

Height of each smaller cone = 3cm
Volume of each smaller cone
1
= πr2 h
3

1 2 3
= π(3.05) × 3cm
3

Volume of the sphere

Number of cones obtained = Volume of each smaller cone

4 3
πr

πr h
3 2

4×10.5×10.5×10.5
=
3.5×3.5×3

= 126.006 ≈ 126

∴ 126 cones are obtained.

10. A spherical ball of radius 3cm is melted and recast into three spherical balls.
The radii of two of these balls are 1.5cm and 2cm. Find the radius of the third
ball.
Ans. : Radius of the original spherical ball = 3cm
Suppose that the radius of third ball is r cm.
Then,

Page 3
Volume of the original spherical ball = Volume of the three spherical balls
4 3 4 3
⇒ π×3 = π × 1.5
3 3

4 3 4 3
+ π×2 + π×r
3 3

3
⇒ 27 = 3.375 + 8 + r

3
⇒ r = 27 − 11.375 = 15.625

⇒ r = 2.5cm

∴ The radius of the third ball is 2.5cm.

* Answer the following questions. [5 Marks Each] [5]

11. A cloth having an area of 165m2 is shaped into the form of a conical tent of

radius 5m. (Use π =

22

7
).

i. How many students can sit in the tent if a student, on an average,

occupies 5

7
m
2
on the ground?
ii. Find the volume of the cone.

Ans. : Area of the floor of the tent = πr 2

22 2
= ( × 5 × 5) m
7

550 2
= m
7

i. Area required by 1 students = 5

7
2
m

550

∴ Required number of students = 7

5
= 110
7

Curved surface area of the tent = Area of the cloth = 165m2

⇒ πrl = 165

22
⇒ × 5 × l = 165
7

165×7 21
⇒ l = = m
22×5 2

Now,
2 2 2
l = r +h

2
21 2 2
⇒ ( ) = 5 +h
2

2 441 341
⇒ h = − 25 = = 85.25
4 4

⇒ h = 9.23m

ii. Volume of the tent = 1

3
2
πr h

1 22 3
= ( × × 5 × 5 × 9.23) m
3 7

3
= 241.7m
