Assignment1_CVG4142

This document outlines the first assignment for the CVG4142 Structural Dynamics course, due on February 8, 2019. It includes problems related to stiffness and damping properties of mass-spring-damper systems, Fourier series expansion, vibration amplitude ratios, and dynamic response of structures under various conditions. Additionally, it covers the analysis of an elevated water tank and the Normal Mode Method for determining eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

CVG4142 – Structural dynamics

ASSIGNMENT# 1

DUE DATE: 8 FEBRUARY 2019–Submission: assignment box at mezzanine of CBY.

1. Starting from the basic definition of stiffness, determine the effective stiffness of the
combined spring and write the equation of motion for the spring–mass systems shown
in figure below.

2. The stiffness and damping properties of a mass–spring–damper system are to be

determined by a free vibration test; the mass is given as m = 0.1 lb-sec2/in. In this test,
the mass is displaced 1 in. by a hydraulic jack and then suddenly released. At the end
of 15 complete cycles, the time is 2 sec and the amplitude is 0.2 in. Determine the
stiffness and damping coefficients.

3. Find the Fourier series expansion of the function given in figure below.

4. What is the ratio of successive amplitudes of vibration if the viscous damping ratio is
known to be (a) ζ = 0.01, (b) ζ = 0.05, or (c) ζ = 0.25? Use the high damping system
assumption.

5. An SDF system is subjected to support displacement ug (t) =ugo sinωt. Show that the
amplitude uto of the total displacement of the mass is given by equation:

6: If a displacement-measuring instrument is used to determine amplitudes of vibration at

frequencies very much higher than its own natural frequency, what would be the optimum
instrument damping for maximum accuracy?

7. An automobile is traveling along a multispan elevated roadway supported at every 100 ft

(Fig.5) . Long-term creep has resulted in 6-in. deflection at the middle of each span. The
roadway profile can be approximated as sinusoidal with amplitude of 3 in. and period of 100 ft.
when fully loaded the weight of the vehicle is 4 kips. The stiffness of the vehicle suspension
system is 800 lb/in. and its viscous damping coefficient is such that the damping ratio of the
system is 40%. Determine a) the amplitude of the vertical motion when the vehicle is traveling
with 40 mph and b) the speed of the vehicle which would produce a resonant condition.

8. The elevated water tank from figure 6 weights 100.03 kips when full with water. The tower
has the stiffness of 8.2 kips/in. estimated the maximum displacement due to each of the two
dynamic forces shown considering one of the methods discussed in this course (Duhamel
integral, Simpson’s rule, linear acceleration rule, etc). neglect damping.

9. a) Using the Normal Mode Method determine the eigenvalues and eigenvectors for the
system shown in the figure bellow if m1 = 5 kg, m2 = 2.5 kg and k1 = 100 N/m, k2 = 250
N/m.
b) Considering that the two-degree-of-freedom system is subjected to a white-noise
stationary ground acceleration, W0 = 0.02 m2/sec4/Hz, determine the RMS of the relative
response of m1 to the ground. The damping factors for each mode are 1 = 0.01 and 2 =
0.03.
