Course Code : EEE 478

Course Title : Power Electronics Lab
Experiment No. : 01
Experiment Name : Familiarization with Power Electronics Lab.

Objective:
1.Understand the fundamental concepts and operation of power electronic devices and
circuits.

2.Analyze the switching characteristics and behavior of components such as thyristors, rectifiers,
or inverters.

3.Observe and interpret voltage and current waveforms using measurement instruments like
oscilloscopes and multimeters.

4.Apply safety procedures and proper handling techniques for power electronic equipment.

Equipment:

1. Digital Oscilloscope : A digital oscilloscope is an electronic test instrument used to

capture, analyze, and display electrical signals in a digital format. It converts analog
signals into digital data using an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), allowing for
precise measurements and storage

2. Center-tapped Transformer (6-0-6) V : A center-tapped transformer (6-0-6 V) is a

type of transformer with a secondary winding that is divided into two equal parts,
with a connection to the center of the winding. This design provides a 0 V potential at
the center tap, while the two ends of the secondary winding provide the same
voltage (6 V in this case), but with opposite polarity.

3. Power Supply : A power supply is an electrical device or system that provides

electrical power to a circuit or load. It converts one form of electrical energy (usually
AC from the wall outlet) into a suitable form for use in electronic circuits, such as DC
power or regulated AC.
4. Digital Multimeter : A digital multimeter is a versatile, handheld device used for
measuring a range of electrical quantities such as voltage, current, and resistance. It
provides digital, numerical readings on an LCD screen, making it more accurate and
easier to interpret compared to traditional analog multimeters, which use a needle
pointer to indicate measurements on a scale.

5. Breadboard: A breadboard is a tool used for prototyping electronic circuits without

the need for soldering. It allows for quick and easy testing and modification of
circuits, making it an essential tool for engineers, hobbyists, and students in
electronics.

Discussion: Familiarization with the Power Electronics Lab is essential for understanding
the practical applications of power electronic devices and circuits. This lab provides handson
experience with components such as thyristors, diodes, MOSFETs, IGBTs, rectifiers, inverters,
and choppers, allowing students to analyze their switching characteristics and performance.
By using measurement instruments like oscilloscopes and multimeters, students can observe
voltage and current waveforms, evaluate circuit efficiency, and troubleshoot faults.
Additionally, the lab emphasizes safety precautions, proper equipment handling, and
realworld applications of power conversion techniques. Through experimentation, students
gain a deeper insight into power electronics, bridging the gap between theoretical concepts
and practical implementation in industrial and electrical systems.
